The Canary Islands have long been rightfully considered a place of elite recreation. The islands are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and consist of 7 large and several small islands.

Island of Volcanoes

The fourth largest island in the Canary archipelago Lanzarote is called the "island of volcanoes". It is complex, like a bizarre mosaic, of unique multi-tiered caves, beaches, plantations of vineyards, cacti and, of course, the sun. Scientists suggest that the age of the island is approximately 15 million years. This is the easternmost island of the Canarian archipelago, located about 125 km from the coast of Africa and 1000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.

The island got its name from the name of the Genoese merchant Lancelotto Malocello, who arrived on the island in the 14th century. The coastline of the island stretches for 213 km, of which 10 km are covered with sand, and the rest is a rocky coast. The beach is located at 16.5 km. Extravagant mountain ranges were formed after numerous eruptions and lava flows that spread along the slopes, giving them bizarre shapes.

The demon is the emblem of the island. This is explained by the fact that the first inhabitants of the island perceived the volcanic eruptions as the work of the devil. The largest recorded eruptions occurred between 1730 and 1736.

For 2.053 days of eruptions, lava covered ¼ of the surface of the entire island, including the most fertile soil, and buried 11 villages under it. The island was actually deprived of forest cover and only succulents and lichens managed to take root in Lanzarote. The drought that affected the island in 1768 and the lack of rain during the winter led to the emigration of the population to America and Cuba.

The next volcanic eruption occurred in 1824, but in terms of its strength it was less destructive than the main one. But it also led to the exodus of the indigenous population. Today, the island has about 140,000 inhabitants, 73.9% of whom are Spaniards.

How to get to Lanzarote

There is no direct flight connection with this fabulous island from Moscow or Kiev. You can fly to the airport of the largest island of the Canary archipelago - Tenerife, and then, having made a transfer, fly to the island of Lanzarote.

Playa de los Pocillos

The beach with golden sand is located just above the ocean level, so the tides leave small "lakes". Previously, sea salt was mined here by the old method of evaporation in the sun.

This is the longest and widest beach in the resort. Its length is 1.600m, the maximum width is 170m (at low tide it can reach 200m). Because of the winds, it is not so attractive for families with children. On its territory there is a rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, a shower, but there are no water activities here.

Playa Matagorda

The beach, covered with golden sand, smoothly starts from Playa de los Pocillos and ends at the Beatriz Playa hotel. It is also windy, its length is 1.000m, the maximum width is 60m. Umbrellas with sun loungers and showers are provided for vacationers. There are no water activities.

Playa Fariones and Playa Chica

They are not intended for beach lovers, as here the entrance to the water is hindered by stones. But it is a favorite place for divers. There is a dive center that teaches mainly beginner divers. The beach is 140m long and 25m wide. On the beach, covered with light sand and stones, there are no sun loungers with umbrellas and water activities, but the shower works properly.

Attractions, entertainment and shopping in Puerto del Carmen

There are many restaurants in the resort, including fish restaurants, offering gourmet Canarian cuisine, bars that entertain visitors every evening with simple show programs, discos and casinos. The port offers an exciting boat trip or fishing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Around the harbor is the "Old Town", which has retained the atmosphere of a fishing village.

In the evening, tourists stroll along Avenida de las Playas, the main thoroughfare of the resort. There are many small shops offering mainly beach assortment and souvenirs.

Las Cucharas

Playa de los Charcos

Windy beach with fine light sand. Entry into the waters of the ocean is hampered by stones. But the beach, with a length of 310m and a width of 30m, is protected from the waves. There are water activities, umbrellas with sun loungers and showers.

El Jabillo

The length of the rocky beach in some places is 180m, the width is 20m. The waves are low here. Near the beach is the Grand Teguise Playa Hotel. There is no entertainment and soul, only the rental of sun loungers and umbrellas works.

Playa Bastian

It differs from the rest in darker sand. There are few vacationers here, since entry into the ocean is difficult due to the rocky descent. The length of the western beach is 300m, its maximum width is 35m.

Playa Ancla

Also, the fortress on Mount Castillo de Santa Barbara is named after its owner, who was canonized for the fact that, without giving the pirates a place of refuge for her servants, she was martyred. She is the patroness of the city, and Spanish Catholics always commemorate her day in churches.

Among the interesting objects should be called the Spinoza Palace, which was originally the residence of the Governor-General, and then passed to later owners - merchants from Genoa.

The resort area has numerous restaurants and bars. There are 2 ports, from one of which you can cross with a car on the Fred Olsen Express high-speed ferry to the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. Of the 250 km of coastline, white, black and red sand beaches occupy 30 km. All of them are municipal and free. The best beaches with crystal clear water and white sand are in Papagayo Bay on the south coast of the island. Windsurfers will love the Playa de Famara beach with its constantly blowing winds.

Arrecife

Arrecife is the capital of the island. The city is located in the eastern part of Lanzarote. It is a commercial and passenger port where commercial ships and cruise liners moor. The city grew up on the site of a settlement founded in the 14th century by the Genevan merchant Malosello. Arrecife has long been a haven from storms for travelers and pirates.

Here are the main historical sites of Lanzarote - the old fortresses of San Jose and San Gabriel. The coast of Arrecife has several excellent EU Blue Flag beaches. In the restaurants of the city, you can taste dishes from fresh fish caught by local fishermen, and taste wine from a vine grown on volcanic lava.

Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a cozy resort town 10 kilometers from Arrecife. This resort was built specifically for tourists in the seventies of the XX century. Cesar Manrique participated in the architectural project of Costa Teguise. His main creation is the center of the town - the stylized fishing village of Pueblo Marinero with restaurants, bars and a traditional weekly fair. In Costa Teguise is one of the residences of the Spanish king. From entertainment there are golf courses, tennis courts, water sports training centers, a water park.

At the end of February, a wonderful carnival takes place here with processions in medieval costumes.

Puerto del Carmen

The tourist capital of Lanzarote is Puerto del Carmen. It stretches for seven kilometers along the southeast coast of the island. Lined with restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and shops, its main street, Avenida de las Playas, is bustling day and night. Around the harbor is the old city center with a labyrinth of streets. This area retains the atmosphere of the small fishing village of La Tiñosa, from which the current resort began. In the vicinity of Puerto del Carmen, you can visit the Rancho Texas Zoological Garden.

At the end of July, Fiesta de Carmen is held here - a bright holiday dedicated to the heavenly patroness of the city.

Puerto Calero

Puerto Calero is a quiet and peaceful resort town. There are no crowded beaches, there are no evening entertainments usual for European resorts. This is an exclusive village built for respectable vacationers. Port of Puerto Calero serves as a marina for private yachts, a starting point for sea excursions and recreational dives in a yellow submarine. The city has a Whale and Dolphin Museum (Museo de Cetáceos de Canarias).

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca is located on the south coast of Lanzarote. This is the newest and actively developing resort of the island. Volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua

The complex of volcanic caves Jameos del Agua (Jameos del Agua) is an extraordinary landscape, which consists of underground passages and grottoes. This complex has become an excursion object thanks to the initiative of the artist Cesar Manrique. The first cave with a luxurious tropical garden and an artificial reservoir is called Jameo Grande. A little further is Jameos del Agua, a concert cave with unique acoustics and the entrance to a crater called Jameo de la Cazuela. The fauna of Jameos del Agua is interesting, the most famous representative of which is the white blind crab, which has become a symbol of this cave complex.

Cueva de Los Verdes

Cave Los Verdes (los Verdes), more than 6 km long, appeared several thousand years ago. At one time, local residents fled from pirates in its intricate galleries. Now a kilometer section of the tunnel with winding corridors and spacious high halls is open for tourists.

Cesar Manrique House Museum

The amazing house of the famous artist, built and decorated by himself, is now the office of the César Manrique Foundation (Fundación César Manrique) and the museum of the eminent master, which stores the works of the artist himself, as well as his personal collection of paintings by Tapies, Miro, Picasso.
