Admiralty Canal Embankment 2. For visitors with disabilities

  • 08.02.2024

Walk along the Moika embankment from the center. The island is visible from afar - high brick walls, plywood windows, thickets near the water. The entrance to New Holland is on one side only. Be prepared for the security guards to ask you to show the contents of your bags, and for drinks and food to be left waiting for you in special cells. The feet that step into the territory of an art space usually direct their owners first to a photo booth, then to an exhibition space, then to trendy cafes, and finally they ask to lie down on the green grass if it’s summer, or to put on skates and go to the skating rink in winter.

A short excursion: rumor ascribes to the island a prison camp purpose, but history claims that ships of the Soviet fleet were designed and tested here. There was a prison here after all. For its shape it was called “bottle”. This is where the expression “stay out of the bottle” comes from. However, the only certainty is that for a long time the buildings, severely destroyed during the Great Patriotic War, were not used, were not restored and were empty.

Now the territory of the island has really been significantly transformed. “New Holland” has become a huge art object in the center of St. Petersburg. And next to it are houses with the same St. Petersburg roofs that are shown in films.

Events held on the island attract perhaps the most diverse audience. Either a concert where dance lovers come, or Library Day, where bookworms flock, or a lecture for young parents, or Astronomy Day, or a performance of modern ballet. There are evenings without events. On such days, people on the island play badminton or tennis, lie on the grass, sit with laptops (free Wi-Fi everywhere), and read books. By the way, you can also work in an area specially equipped for this - an eco-working space. It operates on the principle of a regular coworking space, but in the open air.

“New Holland” was closed for reconstruction and promised to be returned to residents in 2018, but they managed to do it much earlier: the partially renewed park opened in August 2016. The first changes affected the “bottle”. It now houses restaurants and cafes, a bookstore, the Museum of Modern Art, antique shops and halls for yoga and ballet.

They decided not to build new buildings in New Holland. Instead, they purchased several hundred trees from European nurseries. Now you can walk along the linden alley and even take care of the trees yourself - under the guidance of specialists. The park will also feature sculptures, installations and art objects by artists from different parts of the world.

New Holland is a new art space in St. Petersburg. New Holland in St. Petersburg opened in August 2016 with a bang. Thousands of people flocked to the island of New Holland, and how could you not go and have a look; advertisements about the opening of the island were placed on the most popular sites.

And now the promising New Holland Park has appeared in St. Petersburg. As of today, 2019, the park on the island is not completely open, but most of it is. A visit to the park will be interesting not only for adults, but also for children.

New Holland in St. Petersburg how to get there

New Holland in St. Petersburg how to get there where to be? This question began to be asked often and not by chance. Since the park is positioned as a new vacation spot for a large circle of residents and guests of the city of St. Petersburg, and this large number of people wanted to learn as much as possible about it and visit it.

And so New Holland Park in St. Petersburg St. Petersburg address

St. Petersburg embankment of the Admiralteysky Canal 2

This address became known to many citizens and guests of St. Petersburg. However, it is impossible to get to the island of New Holland by metro; it has not been built yet, but there is sufficient public transport:

You need to go to the stop “Truda Square”

Buses: 3, 6, 22, 27, 70, 71, 100
Trolleybuses: 5, 22
Minibus taxis: K-6, K-62, K-124, K-186, K-187, K-306,

to the stop “Ulitsa Pisareva”

Minibus taxis: K-124, K-186

Although it is worth noting that there is a lot of transport, public transport stops are not located very close to the entrance to the park and therefore you will have to walk for at least 5-15 minutes, depending on which stop you arrived at.

New Holland Island on the map and how to get there

New Holland today has one entrance. It is located across the bridge from the Admiralteysky Canal embankment street.

Entrance to the island through the bridge

Getting there by car is more convenient, since the walk is still no more than 5 minutes from the free parking on the roadway (parking on the map No. 1, No. 2). However, if you come by car, then park correctly, otherwise problems may arise with the evacuation of your car. Many tow trucks were seen taking away vehicles. So we park along the embankment of the Moika River, but we have to walk 200-300 meters, but the car will definitely not be taken away. Safe parking spots located not far from the entrance to New Holland Island are indicated on the map with green signs.

Parking along the road on the Moika River embankment

With some luck, you can stand on Pisarev Street, but it is usually occupied by local residents. Be careful, free parking along the embankment of the Moika River after the intersection with Pisarev Street has been closed (parking on map No. 4).

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 09:00 - 22:00
  • Friday, Saturday, Sunday 09:00 - 23:00

New Holland admission free, but visitors will be searched upon entry. At the entrance to the park on the island just beyond the bridge, there are metal detectors and security guards nearby who search large bags and backpacks.

Search at the entrance to New Holland Island

What was noticeable was that drinks in any container were confiscated. In principle, the left drink can be picked up on the way back if you determine that it is your drink in this pile on the shelf. However, in June 2017, security guards also searched large backpacks and bags, but did not stop visitors with drinks. With the exception of alcoholic beverages, they are prohibited according to local regulations.

New Holland art space St. Petersburg

New Holland is a new art space in St. Petersburg. But reconstruction is in full swing and completion is scheduled for 2025. The first stage is open today. It includes several buildings, although it is not yet possible to visit these buildings, and an area with temporary pavilions. The first thing that greets you upon entering the island is this building, or rather the Commandant’s house.

Commandant's House

The Commandant's House is the latest historical building on the island, and until recently it was not included in the architectural monuments and ensemble of New Holland. Previously, the family of the commandant of the island actually lived here. In the future I plan to use it for office space for various park services.

New Holland St. Petersburg information center

You can park your bike near the New Holland Visitor Center, but you won’t be able to ride a bike around the area, and there’s no need to do so.

Extract from the park rules:

People walk around the park. We ask you to leave bicycles, scooters, hoverboards and other means of transportation in the bicycle parking lot. Children under 6 years old are allowed not to follow this rule, but only under the supervision of their parents.

Creatives in New Holland St. Petersburg

As befits modern recreation areas, park administrators come up with various creative things for visitors. The first creative is located, as a rule, not far from the entrance to the island, and the second is on a pontoon beach on a pond.

In 2019, the park welcomes you with pink snails that crawl across the lawns and also climb up the commandant’s house.

For example, in 2018 you could play the piano on the street.

Open air piano photo 2018

It should be noted that many people played, from children to adults, and some received applause, so maybe you will get a standing ovation!

Cafes and shops New Holland building Bottle St. Petersburg

Opposite is the Bottle building. The former prison building was erected by the architect Staubert in the 19th century. It has a characteristic round shape and resembles the neck of a bottle. According to legend, this is where the expression “stay out of the bottle” came from. A progressive system was in place for imprisoned sailors: while serving their sentence, they learned a new profession and received a salary that was issued before release.

Bottle Prison Building New Holland

If you go through the main entrance of the Bottle building, you will find yourself in a round courtyard, in which there is a stage, and in a circle there are small awnings of cafes.

Former prison building Bottle courtyard

And this is not surprising, since the first floor is given over to various cafes. There are many of them, they are located in small rooms, which creates privacy and comfort. The restorers of the former Bottle prison building left the red brick walls, which turned out cool, stylish and leaving a reminder of its original appearance.

First floor corridor

But if you climb the stairs to the second floor, and the stairs also turn out to be very beautiful and wide,

then the interiors of the corridors change to a more modern look.

The second floor is given over to shops. Various stores for women's and men's clothing, an exclusive photography gallery or, for example, a comic book store.

The third floor is dedicated to beauty and health. Having become familiar with the Bottle, we leave the building and continue to get acquainted with the territory of the island.

Moving along a well-kept alley, we pass by an original structure - a toilet. Not poorly designed, the only thing that will not be convenient for some segments of the population to use is that it is 3 floors down and you have to go down the steps,

Underground toilet

but don’t be upset, there were toilets in Bottles and there are in Kuzna, where the cafes are located and there it is on the first floor. We approach the temporary pavilion, which hosts exhibitions prepared by the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art.

Photo of the temporary pavilion

There was not a large queue in front of the entrance to the pavilion, which moved well, but during this time you had time to read the information about the exhibition.

Exhibition announcement

The inside is simple and concise, just like the works themselves. The inspection will take from 5 to 30 minutes depending on your interest.

Inside the exhibition pavilion

And the largest space is occupied by open space. This open space is planted with grass and is divided into zones only by paths. This outdoor area of New Holland hosts various outdoor events. To protect from possible rain, an awning is pulled up.

The herb garden hosts many events that you can join or just sit on the grass. You can do gymnastics for the body.

Many activities, such as gymnastics

There are several entertainment centers for children. One is located in Festival Alley next to the Forge building, where you can learn a lot of interesting things and take part in quizzes and win a prize.

An interactive installation in which vegetables and fruits make their own sound was also very popular. In this way, you can perform the music of vegetables and fruits if you touch them with your hand.

New Holland frigate boat for children St. Petersburg

But of course, most of the children were near the ship, the boat, or rather the frigate.

New Holland Petersburg photo frigate

This frigate is made on a scale of 80% of the real frigate made by Peter the Great at the local shipyards. Children can climb all over the ship.

Well, then slide down the hill back to your parents.

But before you launch your child onto the frigate boat, read the safety instructions.

And while the children are climbing on the boat in New Holland Park, you can sit in the shade not far away.

Boat place for parents

The largest number of people doing nothing are located near the main stage. On a sunny day, you can just lie on the grass and listen to music, and if you happen to be during a concert, then there’s a concert.

Beach pontoons in New Holland Park in St. Petersburg

Well, the second place where people like to gather is on an artificial peninsula in the center of the park, as a pontoon is sometimes called. So, in 2017, the park administration allowed sunbathing on this pontoon. I poured sand and set up sun loungers for 40 people.

From June 1, the beach will open on the pontoon. You can lie on real sand, look at the water and sunbathe on sun loungers every day from 9:00 to 21:00

Extract from the park safety rules

  • stay for persons under 14 years of age without accompanying persons - legal representatives who have reached 18 years of age.
  • be on the Beach without a swimsuit (including topless);
  • open and close beach umbrellas independently
  • throw sand located on the Beach into the pond;
  • bring glass, sharp and dangerous objects into the territory of the Beach and Pontoons;
  • climb onto the sides of the Pontoons, lean over the sides of the Pontoons, go down into the water.

Every year the administration decorates this pond and the beach on pontoons in different ways.

In 2019, the creative is called Victoria Amazonian. The water decoration consists of 130 artificial water lily leaves with an area of more than 320 m2.

Victoria amazonica at the pontoon beach

But this is not an acquired taste, and there aren’t many sunny days in St. Petersburg, but the pink flamingos that swam in the pond definitely lifted the mood in 2018 in cloudy weather.

Pontoon and pink flamingos photo 2018

Swimming in the pond and on flamingos is prohibited, but you can admire it.

Food in New Holland Park

Since the summer of 2017, food in New Holland Park has become normal, in the sense that previously there were only kiosks on the street, but now a cafe and restaurant have opened in Kuzna. There are two pavilions selling hot food in the park. They are open, there are no tables for a leisurely lunch, but in general, if you are hungry, there is something to eat. On a clear day, when there were many visitors, a queue lined up in front of the cafe.

Line up at a cafe in the park

The price tag for food, as it should be for such events, is not low, but to call it high would also not be true. So, here is the price list of one of the cafes, although the photo was taken from the English version of the price list; I am presenting it below for general reference. The price of another cafe is about the same, only the assortment is slightly different.

Price of one of the cafes in the park

Two establishments open in the Kuznya building, the Volkonsky cafe DELI and the Kuznya House club and restaurant, offer meals in a more comfortable environment. The premises are interestingly decorated, the price tag is the same as everywhere else in vacation spots.

Cafe Volkonsky Deli entrance

At the entrance to the Volkonsky Deli cafe (Deli, or cooking) there will be a hall in which there are tables for eating, and to the right is the entrance to the toilet rooms, and to the left is the cafe’s shopping area.

The snack was quite a success, it was delicious. Next time we will visit the Kuznya House restaurant, and then there will be photos.

Upon completion of your visit to the island of the New Holland Park in St. Petersburg, you can take photographs in the photo zone near the Forge building. To better display your mood, you can choose signs with various expressions instead of emoticons.

A wonderful photo of the park as a souvenir

Undoubtedly, the city needs an island park in St. Petersburg. Considering that the park is only open to one-third of its capacity, visitors went to it, but what will happen when it opens fully. Today in St. Petersburg there is a site on a much smaller scale on Ligovsky Prospekt, which also enjoys well-deserved popularity.

To keep up to date with ongoing events, go to

official website of New Holland Island http://www.newhollandsp.ru

Everyone is in a good mood to visit New Holland Island Park and take photos for their albums. And for you, dear readers, a question: what to do in the open area, before the buildings are opened, during the cold season? If you have any information, please drop a few lines, but I will definitely visit again in November - December to add new impressions about New Holland.

What to do in the park in winter

What to do in the park in winter? There will be a separate post about winter in more detail, but if now and quickly, then it’s the same as in summer, only you need to dress warmer. There are fewer people in winter than in summer, and this is noticeable right at the entrance.

The main entrance to the island of New Holland Park in winter

The most important entertainment is the skating rink for ice skating (this is a pun, but now there are skating rinks for other sports). Entrance to the ice is paid, there is a rental of skates and their sharpening, the same for a fee. But the changing areas are made in the pavilion and are therefore warm and quite comfortable.

Access to locker rooms and skate rental
New Holland skating rink

The entire area in front of the stage, where in warm weather you can lie on the grass, is occupied by a large skating rink, which operates according to a schedule. The ice is removed between sessions. According to the administration, the area of the skating rink is more than 2,000 m2 and 300 visitors can skate on it, so there is enough space for everyone.

Schedule and prices for the skating rink

Winter New Holland is less interesting, but the opening of the remaining buildings will allow for a more varied time spent. So the opening of the Volkonsky DELI cafe and the Kuznya House club and restaurant in the Kuznya building meant that there were fewer problems with getting a snack, but we were only on the street and in bad weather it was very uncomfortable, but now we have all the conveniences.

Where to ride cheesecakes in winter 2019 in Kupchino and other areas of St. Petersburg? Living in the city, it seems that finding a place for cheesecake rides...

Behind the fence there is a real construction site. We ourselves sometimes want to go to the warehouses, but safety is more important. There are many more interesting things in the public part of the Island- look around.

People in uniform walk around the Island: they protect peace and provide security. You can turn to them for help, and they sometimes turn to those who are seriously upset with requests.

In any unclear situation contact administrators Islands. They can always be found in the Info Center. There is also a blue mailbox for letters, confessions and wishes.

On lawns you can walk, lie down, read, fly kites - the main thing is not to disturb other visitors. On children's playgrounds You can have fun and play while following the safety rules written on the stands.

So that it doesn't feel bad

We are glad when you have picnics in the park, but please do not bring drinks in glass bottles and alcohol, as well as grills and barbecues onto the island: lighting a fire on the territory of the park is prohibited.

We are trying to make sure that in the summer on the Island you can stretch out on the grass without fear. You will help us a lot if you throw anything that looks like garbage into trash cans.

There is a picturesque and interesting construction site going on around the perimeter of the Island. It's nice to admire the canals. It is important to remember that kids are interested in everything, especially those places where adults are not allowed. Keep an eye on the children.

On the sunniest days and holidays there may be a queue at the entrance, because we have to look at everyone, and for now We cannot accommodate more than 5,000 people at the same time.

If you are lucky and have a yacht or jetski, moor it in a convenient place outside the Island - The canals and pond are closed for cleaning.

Smoking and using electronic cigarettes, as well as IQOS, Glo, Juul and any other tobacco heating systems can be used in special places. There are no children or those who do not like tobacco smoke and steam. There you can hide from the harsh views of fighters for a healthy lifestyle. Look for familiar icons.

Please take photos and videos for yourself. But any commercial, artistic and other professional filming must be discussed with the administration. We would not like New Holland to become a backdrop for projects that we do not like.

People walk around the park. We ask for bicycles, scooters, hoverboards and other means of transportation leave it in the bike rack. Children under 6 years old are allowed not to follow this rule, but only under the supervision of their parents.

Benches and ping pong tables do not need to be moved, they stand in their places, you can’t imagine anything better.

If you are lucky and you less than 14 years old, then you will need to go to the Island come with an adult.

We love pets, but we ask that you do not use New Holland to walk them. Leave dogs and cats off the Island.

New Holland Island is a historical site. Imagine that you are in the Hermitage, and a microscopic caretaker in a cap is sitting next to you. Be careful that your refined speech didn't wake her up.

Art and creativity - in the Pavilion and the Mayak School: the historic buildings and wooden structures on the Island are not meant for self-expression.
