Riga (as well as other Baltic capitals) is simply a godsend for those who dream of a fabulous weekend. Most train tours to Riga are designed for just 3-5 days, during which tourists have time to leisurely get acquainted with the main attractions of the Latvian capital, stroll along its ancient streets, enjoy traditional cuisine in local restaurants and even drop into a couple of shopping centers. The standard program of Riga tours includes a sightseeing walking tour of the Old Town with a visit to the Riga Castle, Dome Cathedral, Swedish Gate, Powder Tower, Bastion Hill, the Convention Courtyard and other important historical and architectural monuments. In addition, tourists are offered a variety of additional excursions, for example, a trip to the Rundāle Palace and Park Ensemble, a mini-trip to the medieval Jaunpils Castle or a tour of the Sugulde Nature Reserve.

For curious and tireless maximalists who are accustomed to getting a lot of impressions from every trip, combined tours are suitable, during which you can visit all the Baltic capitals at once. The three-day “Weekend to Latvia and Lithuania” tour will introduce you to the most interesting sights of Riga, Vilnius and Trakai, and by going on the “Riga and Tallinn for Christmas” tour, you will spend the pre-New Year week unforgettably.

Relocation options

You can get to Riga without transfers on branded passenger trains from Moscow and St. Petersburg. Moscow train 001Р “Latvijas Express” departs from Riga Station at 17:08, along the way it stops at nine stations and arrives in Riga 16.2 hours later, at 9:24. Due to their low cost, tickets for general seats are very popular, but to occupy comfortable sleeping places in such a carriage you will need luck.

During the winter and summer holiday season, when passenger traffic increases noticeably, an additional train “Jurmala” 003P/004P begins running between the two capitals. In addition, train 183Р/184Р is periodically scheduled from Riga to Moscow and back. It departs from the Riga railway station at 21:02 and arrives at the Riga railway station at 12:06.

Train 037Р “Baltia” runs from St. Petersburg to Riga; it departs from Vitebsk station at 17:20 and arrives at the station in Riga the next morning at 9:24. This schedule is very convenient for tourists: during the night on the road they have time to sleep well and arrive in Riga full of energy and ready for new experiences.

When crossing the border by rail, passengers go through passport and customs control without leaving the train: border guards themselves enter the carriage, check their belongings and passports.

Riga railway station, where all trains arrive, is located in the central part of the city. By the way, within a five-minute walk from the station there is a minibus stop that takes you to Jurmala.

Riga is not only the largest city in Latvia, but also in the entire Baltic region. And in its region, in terms of population, it is second only to St. Petersburg and Stockholm. But, of course, many tourists coming to the capital of Latvia are attracted not by this, but by its many attractions.

Holidays in Riga are an opportunity to see such, without exaggeration, masterpieces of architects as the Church of St. Peter, the Dome Cathedral and the Cathedral of St. James, built respectively in 1209, 1211 and 1225. That is, these three historical and architectural monuments are almost the same age as the famous Parisian Notre Damme Cathedral!

But this is only a small part of what can be seen in Riga. There is also the Riga Castle, which is now the residence of the country's president, and the Powder Tower, and the House of the Blackheads and many other interesting attractions. In the Old Town, be sure to look at the House of Cats - an ancient building of the early 20th century, the spiers of its two towers are decorated with single figures of black cats, and learn from your guide the interesting history of this attraction.

If vacation for you is cultural enrichment and the opportunity to learn something new, then Riga will not disappoint you. The city has many museums. These are the Military Museum, the Museum of the History of the Latvian Railway, the Riga Motor Museum, the Museum of the History of Riga and Navigation, the Art Museum and many others. But a holiday in Riga is, of course, not only excursions to its interesting places. The capital of Latvia is a large, modern city with many cultural and entertainment facilities. These are, first of all, the Latvian National Theatre, the Riga State Operetta Theatre, the Latvian National Opera and the Riga Russian Theater named after Mikhail Chekhov. If you are vacationing in this city with children, be sure to visit the Latvian Puppet Theater, as well as the Riga Zoo.

If you come to Riga on holiday in the summer, you will probably find yourself at one of the many music festivals that are held at this time of year: from classical opera to modern jazz and rock. Fans of more down-to-earth leisure will also not be disappointed. Many restaurants, bars and casinos will gladly welcome tourists to show how memorable a holiday in Riga can be! The prices, of course, will also be remembered... However, they are still lower than in such European capitals as Paris, Vienna, Rome, London, etc.

And if you are tired of the influx of impressions, visit one of the many parks in Riga and just sit on a bench admiring the nature around you. This could be Vermansky Park - the oldest park in the city, and Victory Park, famous for its landscape design, and Viestura Garden, founded by Peter I. And in total there are more than ten parks in the city that will diversify your holiday in Riga, the cost of which will be immeasurably less than the cost of a vacation in a casino. And there are probably more benefits. But, as they say, there is no arguing about tastes.

In conclusion. Riga is a beautiful city with its own indescribable aura. And to feel it, just walk along the ancient, cobbled streets of the old city. Walk through the places where the heavy boots of Peter I and the light shoes of Anna Pavlovna Kern, sung in Pushkin’s poems, walked. Breathe the Riga air, and gradually the charm of this city, intoxicating like Riga balm, will fill you. Then you can say that you have visited Riga!
