Economical holiday at the thermal lake Heviz in Hungary. How to get from Budapest to Lake Heviz on your own? Distance from Budapest to Lake Heviz

  • 28.01.2024

There are no trains directly to Heviz, so most travelers travel to the town of Keszthely, located on the shores of Lake Balaton, and then take buses or taxis.

Trains depart from South Station, also known as Delhi Station (Budapest Déli pályaudvar). Much less frequently, trains depart to the Lake Heviz area from the East Station, also called Keleti Station (Budapest Keleti pályaudvar).

Getting to Delhi Station is quite easy; next to it is the Deli pályaudvar metro station (red line M2). Around 8 trains depart from Delhi Railway Station every day. Next to Keleti Station is the Keleti pályaudvar metro station (red line M2). There are only 2 trains leaving from Keleti station.

You will also have to get to Keszthely by train with a transfer, which usually takes place at Balatonszentgyörgy station. Having reached Kesztehely, you need to find a regular bus with a sign “Hévíz” or a taxi to the city of Heviz.

The cost of a train ticket is about 3,500 forints (about 550 rubles)

The train and bus stations in Kesztehely are located on the same square, so it will be quite difficult to get lost. Buses to Heviz leave every hour, travel time is about 20 minutes.

Traveling in a rented car provides several advantages, which include the opportunity to not depend on train and bus schedules, as well as to enjoy beautiful views of the “Hungarian Sea” - Lake Balaton, past which the main highways run. Having a GPS in your car makes traveling much easier, as does having road signs on most highways.

Water transport is popular among tourists who want not only to visit the thermal lake Heviz, but also to enjoy the beauty of one of the largest lakes in Europe - Balaton, often called the “Hungarian sea”.

You can also travel to the regions neighboring Heviz by train, which departs from the railway station in the city of Kesztehely. When purchasing a Balaton Mix ticket, tourists can also save money on travel.

Balaton Mix is a special ticket sold at all railway stations, as well as at ticket offices at river piers. This ticket allows you to make an unlimited number of trips not only by train, but also on ships of the Balatoni Hajózási Zrt company to all cities located in the Lake Balaton area.

When purchasing a ticket, you should pay attention to the fact that the number of days indicated on it only means the validity period of this ticket. The number of days when you can travel for free with a ticket is indicated in the table.

Heviz is a famous thermal resort in Hungary. Those who want to relax and heal in the wonderful lake flock to the local baths. How can you get from Budapest to Heviz?

There are buses from Keszthely to Heviz. The railway station and bus station are located on the same square. Look for a sign that says Hévíz. Buses to Heviz leave approximately every two hours.

A ticket costs €1-1.5. The trip takes about 10 minutes. Schedule.

By bus

It’s easier, more convenient and faster to get to Heviz from the capital on comfortable Volánbusz buses, which depart from the Nepliget bus station and arrive in the center of Heviz. There are direct flights and flights with transfers.

A bus ticket will cost from €12. Travel time is about 3 hours. See the schedule on the website.

Transfer

Are you going on vacation and don’t want to waste time and energy on the road? Then take advantage of the transfer.

From Budapest Airport to Heviz

International Airport Liszt Ferenc Nemzetközi Repülőtér is located 21 km from the center of Budapest and 212 km from Heviz. To get from the airport to Heviz, you must first get to the city center. I talked about this. And continue to get there, as I wrote above.

I structured my Hungarian trip in such a way that I could see as many interesting places as possible. But at the same time, I tried to make sure that there was a minimum of moving from hotel to hotel with a heavy suitcase. So two main “bases” were chosen: Heviz and, from where I traveled around the surrounding area every day.

From Heviz to Budapest by state bus

From Heviz bus station, up to 9 direct buses depart daily to Budapest. They spend from 2.5 to 4 hours on the road. The first flight departs at half past nine in the morning, and the last at half past six in the evening.

The buses are comfortable, there is no shaking on the road - you don’t ride, you float! They arrive at the Nepliget bus station in Budapest.

In addition to direct flights, there are many options with one transfer, but this does not take much more time.

Buying a ticket

Online ticket sales are not available for local flights. As a rule, there are always places available. Therefore, you can safely come to the ticket office before the bus departs and purchase a ticket. But I liked paying the driver for the fare. Everything is legal, he punches the receipt on the cash register. But you don't need to stand in line.

Price

The fare depends on the route: the longer the route, the more expensive the ticket. You can get to Budapest for 3400-3700 forints (11-12 euros).

From Heviz to Budapest by Volanbusz bus

The Eurolines company (in Hungary it is called Volanbusz) travels from Heviz to Budapest 7-9 times a day. Buses run from five in the morning to six in the evening and reach Budapest in 3-3.5 hours. In general, I like their beautiful and comfortable interiors, and even more like the free Wi-Fi on the go. The departure and arrival points are the same as for government buses.

Buying a ticket

You can easily pay for tickets for most flights of this carrier. But for some of them, opposite which there is a letter “W” in the schedule, purchase can only be made from the driver.

Price

The fare is a little more expensive than on state buses. One way ticket – 3700-4000 forints (12-13 euros).

From Heviz to Budapest by car

A car is a wonderful means of transportation around Hungary. But compared to public transport, it’s a little expensive, it seems to me. Take at least rent. On special websites you can see all the offers of rental offices in the city you need. Prices start from 60 euros per day. Gasoline to Budapest will cost approximately 30 euros. You will also need to buy an electronic vignette, which gives you the right to travel on any toll roads in the country for a certain period (10 days, month or year). A ten-day vignette for a passenger car costs about 10 euros. You can buy it both online and on the spot (before entering the toll section) in terminals, shops, gas stations, etc. If I didn’t scare you with the costs of such a trip, the smooth, smooth, well-groomed Hungarian roads will serve as a bonus for you, which are a pleasure to ride on.

From Heviz to Budapest. Other options

I didn’t even consider a taxi, as it turns out to be very expensive. But it’s quite possible to get there by train, but it’s completely inconvenient. The fact is that there is no railway station in Heviz itself. The nearest one is 5 km from the city, in neighboring Keszthely. That is, you first need to get by bus to Keszthely, go to the railway station and take the train. Everything would be fine, but there are no direct flights to Budapest either, you will have to make from one to five transfers. In general, this is a time- and money-consuming method; I don’t even think it makes sense to recommend it.

Results

I never cease to envy the local residents of Hungary because of the excellent quality of local buses. We also have modern and beautiful showrooms, but they, as a rule, belong to private carriers. I was traveling in a regular state car - it’s hard to find fault, everything is convenient, polite, clean.

Last fall I had the opportunity to accompany my aunt to Lake Heviz for treatment. The lake is a large beautiful reservoir with healing water. The resort of the same name is also located here. I have been to Hungary several times, I really like the thermal springs of Budapest, Eger and Miskolc. But I didn’t have a chance to visit Lake Balaton. I heard that Hungarians love this huge lake, because it is the only “sea” in their country. And I had to figure out how to get to this beauty myself. I accompanied a far from young aunt, who often did not feel very well. Therefore, I first had to understand all the nuances and options for our movements in great detail. This helped us a lot in our moves. Maybe it will help you too. So, let's go!

Heviz International Airport – Balaton

The city of Heviz and its miraculous thermal lake are located near Lake Balaton, just nine kilometers away. The nearest airport where planes with tourists who want to get treatment in Heviz arrive is called Heviz-Balaton. Until 2005, it was a military airfield and was called after the village next to which it is located - Sharmellek. Locals often still call it that way. The airport has detailed information that may be useful when planning your trip.
It was here that I learned from the schedule that there are flights to Heviz from Moscow. And then on search sites I specified a route through this airport. You can search and buy tickets in advance, for example. But, unfortunately, there are very few flights to this airport. In addition to the air carrier Utair, which flies once a week on Sundays, and only from July to October, the remaining carriers are German: Lufthansa and Germania. Therefore, many tourists get to this resort through.

How to get from Balaton Airport by train

Heviz does not have a direct train connection. The nearest train station is in the neighboring town of Keszthely, which is 10 km from Heviz. So, if you travel from the airport to the city by train, you will have to change trains in any case. From the airport we take the train to Keszthely and change to a bus to the center of Heviz. Conveniently, the train station in Keszthely and the bus station are located on the same square.
Keszthely is a city on Lake Balaton, very popular among tourists. Trains arrive in this city from different parts of Hungary and other countries. The train arrival schedule at the station can be viewed on the official website of the railway service.
In general, Keszthely is a small city, but there is something to see here. Here, by the way, is the most beautiful palace in Hungary - the Festetics estate. So a transfer in this city can be combined with an excursion to the palace.
To get from Keszthely to Heviz, you need to take a regular bus or use a taxi. Buses depart from Keszthely central bus station to Heviz quite often. On this website you can check the time of departure, arrival at the final destination and the bus route. By the way, the buses themselves do not have a flight number; look carefully at the signs on the windshield, which indicate the name of the final stop. The drive to Heviz is only 15-20 minutes.

Fare

On the website of the Hungarian Passenger Railways you can find out the current fares, as well as discounts and promotions that are valid at this time. For example, MÁV-START travel between the two stations closest to Heviz-Balaton airport, Keszthely and Balatonszentgyorgy, costs 310 forints (just under 1 euro) in a 2nd class carriage and 390 forints (1.5 euros) in a first class carriage.

Buying tickets

On this one of the popular Hungarian carriers Volan you can buy a bus ticket from Keszthely to Heviz. When paying, you must indicate the email address to which your purchased ticket will be sent. You can also pay the fare directly on the bus to the driver in cash.

How to get from Heviz-Balaton Airport to Heviz by bus

You can also take a bus from Heviz-Balaton Airport to Heviz. Transport connections are good here. You can get from the airport to the city by regular buses. There is a bus stop right outside the airport terminal. The platform must have a schedule indicating the departure time and the final destination of the bus. The only inconvenient thing is that the buses do not have numbers; you have to look at the signs on the bus where it goes.

Fare

The cost of travel by bus from Sarmellek station to Heviz is from 300 forints to 450 (1-1.5 euros), depending on whether it is a direct flight or the bus will call at Keszthely.

Buying a ticket

Bus tickets can be purchased from the driver if you board at stops along the route, or at the bus station ticket office if you board at the final stop.

How to get by taxi from the airport to Heviz

The most convenient way to get to the city from the airport is by taxi. Since the distance from the airport to the city is small, only 9 kilometers, even with a modest budget you can afford such a comfortable transfer. You can use a taxi call website, or you can negotiate with the hotel to send a taxi for you. I wrote a letter to the hospital and they organized a taxi for us when our flight arrived. We paid 2500 forints (8 euros). When ordering a taxi, you need to clarify how many people will be traveling and what class of car you want.

Car rent

If you are a happy owner of an international license and drive a car well, it is very convenient to rent a car. Then it will be possible not only to quickly and comfortably get from the airport to Heviz. To be honest, Heviz is, well, a very quiet and very calm city! For retirees and for health improvement, it’s definitely good! But if I had to stay there for even a week, I can’t imagine what I would do. And when you have a car at hand, you can explore the entire nearby region without any problems. For example, go for a walk to Lake Balaton.
Although the airport terminal is small, you can rent a car on site. But, of course, it is better to do this at home, in advance. Go to a search site, preferably several. For example, you can take a look. Choose a machine by color, size, cost, study the rental conditions. And at the airport you just need to get into it and go on a journey.
Have a comfortable trip everyone!

Lake Heviz is the largest reservoir in the world with thermal healing water, and the resort of the same name is located here. Most people who want to relax here get to the place through Budapest International Airport, and for this they will need to cover a distance of more than 200 km. You can order a transfer Budapest - Heviz or use local modes of transport.
