Los Angeles (English Los Angeles, IPA (English): , Spanish Los Ángeles, IPA (Spanish): ; obsolete Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, also known as L.A. and City of Angels - City of Angels) is a city in the United States in the south of California, located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. The largest in terms of population in the state and the second in the country (as of July 1, 2009 - 3,831,868 inhabitants). The city is the administrative center of the district of the same name, as well as the center of Greater Los Angeles, an agglomeration with a population of over 17 million people. Residents of Los Angeles are called "Angelenos" (pronounced [angelinos]). Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cultural, scientific, economic and educational centers. The city is also one of the world's largest centers of the entertainment industry in the fields of cinema, music, television, and computer games.

The coastal areas now occupied by Los Angeles were inhabited by the Tongva and Chumash Indians in the 16th century. The first European to land in the area of ​​present-day Los Angeles in 1542 on two ships “San Salvador” and “La Victoria” (each with a displacement of 50 tons) was the navigator Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo (the pilot and his deputy was Bartolomeo Ferrello). Sailing from La Navidad, Mexico, on July 27, 1542, Cabrillo landed in San Diego Bay on September 28. At that time, there was an Indian village called Yang-Na on the shore. The discoverer himself died on January 3, 1543 and was buried on the island of San Miguel, later named after him “Juan Rodríguez”. Rodriguez Cabrillo wrote about his voyage in a journal that his pilot brought, and now it is kept in one of the archives of Seville (Spain). Only 227 years later, the next expedition landed here under the command of Gaspar Portola, in which the Franciscan missionary Juan Crespi took part, who noted in his notes the suitability of the area for settlement. In 1771, another missionary, Junípero Serra, founded a mission on the site, named after the Archangel Gabriel. By that time, on the territory of modern Los Angeles there were about 30 settlements of the Tongva Indians, where about 3 thousand people lived. On September 4, 1781, at the insistence of the governor of both Californias, Felipe de Neve, a village called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles sobre El Río Porciúncula was founded near the mission by a group of Spanish colonists consisting of 46 people. “The village of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Angels, on the Porsyunkula River”). For several decades, the new settlement remained just a small town, but by 1820 it was already the largest secular settlement in California: 650 people lived here. Nature has generously rewarded the City of Angels with a unique topography, wonderful beaches and a fairly mild climate. In the article I will tell you how to understand all the variety of areas and, I will also show you the metro map and where Los Angeles is located on the world map, which will help you prepare for an unforgettable trip to America on the West Coast of the USA, located on the opposite side of the globe.

First of all, Los Angeles is known for its famous areas, located on the map along the Californian coast right by the ocean or a little to the side, such as Hollywood, Venice or Malibu. It is also the tourism capital of the world, which constantly attracts new film and television actors, producers, artists and poets, surfers, party youth and dreamers. It’s not for nothing that this city of dreams is sometimes called (La-La-Land), because it really gives you the opportunity to come and become someone (for example, the best actor, director, musician, screenwriter or writer).

Unlike the well-known luxury resorts, when most tourists mention it, they remember not the paradise lagoons, but the TV series “Baywatch” with Pamella Anderson in the title role. However, if you look at the map, you can see that there are plenty of places to relax on the coast, stretching from north to south for more than 100 kilometers, in the city, and all the beaches are very different. However, before you go here for a beach holiday, familiarize yourself with the features of its rather mild climate.

Undoubtedly, all this is already known to independent tourists going on vacation to Los Angeles from other experienced travelers. And although it is impossible to foresee everything, it is worth familiarizing yourself in advance Los Angeles map so as not to get confused in a big metropolis and be able to find the right address. Well, this is quite understandable by the fact that quite a large number of small towns around the historical center of L.A., with the expansion of the agglomeration, gradually merged together. And today under called Los Angeles usually understand the urban agglomeration of Greater Los Angeles, consisting not only of ordinary urban areas, but also of many cities located on its territory and included in its composition according to the administrative principle of management.

Every Los Angeles area is necessarily different from the others, and the administration of the vast metropolis which they together constitute is distributed among several large centers which were formerly separate cities. Today, Los Angeles includes more than 80 separate districts, which, in turn, are also often divided into parts (like, for example, Hollywood - into central, western, northern, Hollywood-Hills, etc.).

During our trip to California, we arrived by car and immediately went to a hotel in Hollywood with free parking - La Brea Inn. It turned out to be nice and very clean, with spacious rooms and good soundproofing. It’s convenient to leave your car in the parking lot and walk along Hollywood Boulevard, all the main attractions are nearby. It's only a 3-minute walk to the Chinese Theater, so we recommend it.

I note that the main areas of Los Angeles, which are most often visited by tourists, are scattered throughout the city, far from each other. For example, the distance between West Hollywood and Santa Monica is 18 km. And to get to the Malibu area, you will have to travel more than 50 kilometers from the city center. Therefore, it is worth keeping in mind that even to explore the main attractions of the city you will have to travel and walk a lot (there is also the opportunity to ride on tourist buses, see more about them).

It is important to know that getting to know the City of Angels may take much longer than you expected in advance. And if you have strictly limited time, then it is better to limit yourself to only some of the main areas and carefully study them.

However, if you still want to see as much as possible at one time, then instead of running headlong throughout the city, it is better to divide your acquaintance in the areas of Los Angeles into two simple stages:

1. First, buy a city transport pass (for one or several days) and see the most interesting things in the city center (Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westside, Downtown, go to Universal Studios);
2. And then rent a car (on the website Rentalcars.com>>) and slowly drive around the outskirts (you can even go by car to Disneyland, which is located in the city of Anaheim), trying to avoid traffic jams in the central part of the city.

Urban transport in Los Angeles is quite well thought out, but is aimed primarily at local residents who constantly travel along certain routes. For tourists who drive around the city during the day, it may not seem entirely convenient, because some places are easier to get to by rented car. However, in addition to the subway and buses with taxis, the city also has a train (Union Station connects Los Angeles with the rest of America), as well as a large international airport and four smaller airports, a seaport in San Pedro Bay, and even a cable car!

Single bus/metro tickets and a 1-day pass can be purchased at special kiosks located at each metro station. Single passes allow you to use city transport for several days (except for some express buses). Weekly and monthly passes are sold at Metro Customer Centers, the main one located at Union Station. Los Angeles Subway (Metro Rail)- quite convenient and connects many popular areas of the city, including Santa Monica, Long Beach and Pasadena. Tourists have the easiest access to many attractions, including Hollywood Boulevard and Universal Studios, by subway. Metro is also connected to Union Station and MetroLink (express buses) in the city center. What else is useful to know about Los Angeles

To summarize, I note that Los Angeles on the map looks quite large and extensive, so based on my experience visiting this largest city on the West Coast of the United States, I recommend starting to plan and prepare for your trip in advance and make up your mind. I advise you to first choose the areas that are most interesting to you, which you would definitely like to visit, and study as much practical information about them as possible, as well as about how to buy one that is suitable for you.

Much has already been written and rewritten about large Google offices (which, however, does not mean that the topic is closed; o)). But almost no one knows what small offices look like. I decided to fill this gap and, while on vacation, visited the office in Los Angeles. This office is small (maybe 100-150 people), but very nice and interesting. This is what we will talk about today.

The office starts with a counter that looks much cozier than the formal counters in Mountain View. We came there on a day off, so no one was sitting there. But so that we wouldn’t relax, Google’s security guards were closely watching us, and literally a couple of minutes later an auntie came running and asked if we had badges.

In the office itself, of course, we first went to look at the dining room. Nothing was prepared there, since it was a day off, but on Google, food and everything connected with it is already a kind of symbolism, and the dining room is a must-see place where you need to go and see “how they are doing.” I can say that I liked “them” even more than “us”!

On each table there are feng shui bamboos, salt, pepper and some other thing that I don’t know why I need it.

The plates in the dining room are square. There is also an aquarium and popcorn.

There is a ping pong table right in the dining room. I don’t really imagine why - most likely there was no place for it in other parts of the building.

But in general, the appearance of the dining room is very nice and cozy.

Google in Los Angeles is located very close to the beach. Therefore, those Googlers who like to go surfing during lunch keep their surfboards in a special area. Looking at this picture, I even began to think about whether I should transfer to Los Angeles :). However, it’s not serious.

The workplaces themselves are also designed in a very diverse and interesting way.

The office itself consists of two small buildings, between which there is a small courtyard where Googlers can lie in a hammock, eat freshly picked oranges, sit on painted chairs, appear on suspended glass balls and even play chess.

The interiors are also not inferior in terms of opportunities to relax.

I also really liked that the office had its own small – but remote – library.

A hair salon that looks more or less like a real one. Buses come to our office, where everyone gets their hair cut. Otherwise, it will be impossible to cope with the influx of people wanting to get a haircut. And in a small office it’s much easier to do something real.

Well, all sorts of pleasant interesting things throughout the office.

As a summary, I can say that I really liked the office. It is much cozier than Googleplex and there are very few people working there, who probably know each other by name. By the way, they have many open vacancies. Therefore, if you are thinking of trying your hand at getting a job at Google, but prefer small, cozy offices to a large and noisy anthill, then why not Los Angeles? 🙂
