Where is the best place to relax in Rhodes: tips for tourists. The best resorts and places in Rhodes: where to go on vacation Rhodes, where is the best place to go

  • 27.01.2024

The only thing that scared us a little were various rumors about refugees flooding Greece. But there are no refugees in Rhodes. At all. So holidays there are quite safe.

So, as usual, we booked the trip through a travel agency and, knowing that we wouldn’t have to sit still, we didn’t bother too much with choosing a hotel, choosing the small hotel that we liked most from those offered by the tour operator ( I’ll write about the hotel separately).

The flight from Krasnodar to Rhodes took 2 hours, we flew over two seas and over Turkey (Rhodes is a few miles from the Turkish coast), at the Rhodes airport all procedures went very quickly, the airport itself is small, and there were not very many people. But there are a lot of Russian tourists in Rhodes, from most of them I heard sad conversations that “Turkey was closed, Egypt was closed, where should we go for the poor, Greece is the only budget holiday left.”

What to do in Rhodes

The week was quite busy:

Day 1: we arrived in the afternoon, checked in very quickly, then went to get acquainted with the city, shops, beaches;

> Review of Faliraki resort

Day 2: beach holiday, went swimming and sunbathing in one of the most beautiful bays of the island - Ladiko Bay;

Day 3: we went to Rhodes on our own, getting a lot of impressions, in the evening we went to the beach;

Day 4: sightseeing tour (from the tour operator) of Rhodes - for the whole day we traveled around the island along the entire perimeter along the entire coast, stopping at some attractions;

> Review of the sightseeing tour of Rhodes

> Story about a traditional Greek house and tasting

Day 5: again we devoted the whole day to a beach holiday - this time in Anthony Queen Bay;

Day 6: independent excursion to Lindos - it’s unforgettable, in the evening - again the beach;

Day 7: independent trip to the seven springs and in the evening - purchase of souvenirs (although there was already a full bag of purchases after the excursions);

> Story about a trip to 7 springs

Our departure was early in the morning on the 8th day.

Impressions of Rhodes. Is it worth going?

The island of Rhodes is indeed very beautiful, but after our black soil, the light (sandy-rocky) scorched earth and the abundance of unfinished hotels and buildings at first gave the impression that you were on a construction site. However, this impression quickly disappears. The vegetation is not very dense, but there are many flowers - bright, large, many fruit trees, olive groves, vineyards. Nature somehow reminded me of our Taman or the eastern coast of Crimea, but everything was brighter and more exotic.

Do not believe those who write about the “gentle” Rhodian sun. It is not for nothing that the island is considered the patrimony of the sun god - Helios: according to legend, when Zeus divided the lands between the gods, Helios was busy with his main business - illuminating the Earth, and did not have time to distribute, therefore, when he complained to Zeus that he was left with nothing, he offered choose any piece of land for him. Helios chose the most beautiful island - Rhodes. Of course, he showers his patrimony with rays, and the sun (at least in July) here is simply merciless to unwary tourists. It is especially deceptive on the shore, as a light cooling breeze blows from the sea, and you simply don’t feel like you’re slowly being fried. Even creams don’t really help, we got pretty sunburned on the first day, and this despite the fact that the Kuban sun is also extremely hot, so you have to be very careful. Sunscreens, sunscreens, and after-sun creams are sold everywhere, but they are not cheap - from 7 to 20 euros on average. But the cream is also not a panacea - it will not save you from the direct rays of the hot midday sun; on the beach it is better to be in the shade - under umbrellas.

The island is washed by two seas - the Mediterranean and the Aegean. The eastern coast, washed by the Mediterranean Sea, and its northern part is considered a resort. There are beautiful sandy and pebble beaches, bays, and many hotels. The western side of the island is washed by the very stormy Aegean Sea, it is windy, the coast is rocky, and the temperature is a couple of degrees lower than on the east coast. There are practically no hotels here, but the vegetation is denser and greener. Many olive plantations and vineyards. If in the eastern part people live mainly from tourism, then in the western part they also live from agriculture.

Review of Faliraki resort

There is no industry at all on the island, so the water in Rhodes is considered the cleanest in Europe. The island is fully self-sufficient in electricity (mostly solar energy) and fresh drinking water. It’s generally difficult to die from thirst here. I liked that at almost every step there are taps with clean drinking water. Let the warm water flow down a little, place the bottle - and here you have cool drinking water.

The island has several attractions, including those included in the UNESCO World Heritage List: the Old Town of Rhodes and the Palace of the Grand Masters. There are also ancient monuments here: in Lindos there is the second most important and largest ancient Acropolis after Athens, and Lindos itself with its white narrow streets is unique and is under UNESCO protection.

> Find out more about what excursions are offered in Rhodes

What is protected by UNESCO is in good condition, but some sights are in a rather deplorable state - “waiting for investors.” We have heard this phrase: “investors are waiting” very often. It feels like it’s even convenient for the Greeks to blame everything on the crisis. And the crisis is really felt here - there are a lot of unfinished or abandoned hotels, restaurants, etc. In addition, the fly in the ointment is that the island is quite dirty. That is, no one cleans up garbage on the streets. At all. Empty bottles, pieces of paper, bags - all this along the roads, on the sidelines, near courtyards, on city streets and even a few steps from expensive luxury hotels. This happened here, probably, only in the most “tight” 90s. We concluded that there is no concept of public utilities in Rhodes, but at least you can clean up near your yards, because all the land on the island is someone else’s. The only exception is the beaches. It’s really clean there, the beach workers clean and take care of cleanliness.

The composition of vacationers is very diverse: in addition to Greeks from continental Greece and “Russian tourists”, there are many Germans (how they can stand this heat!), French, and Italians. I want to say separately about the latter - if more than two Italians gather somewhere (on a bus, in a restaurant, in a swimming pool or in a store), then it seems that ONLY Italians are here: they make noise, shout, wave their arms, they can shout at the whole bus , communicating from the front rows with the back rows. I admit, by the end of the vacation, as soon as I saw the Italians, I immediately wondered: why didn’t they sit in Italy, because there are the same islands, the same climate and the same Mediterranean Sea.

The food in Greece is very tasty, plentiful, a lot of meat and vegetables, of course, everything is consumed with olive oil and wine. Very tasty dairy products and fruits. Even living in the south of our country, having tasted Rhodes oranges from a branch, I realized that what they sell in our stores is not oranges, but a pitiful semblance. Very sweet and tasty figs, they grow everywhere here, but unfortunately they are still green, although they sell ripe ones.

> About our gastronomic adventures

And finally, I will say a few words about the local population. The Greeks are very beautiful and friendly people. Both Greeks and Greek women are beautiful. They smile a lot, almost everyone knows at least a few basic words in Russian (and in some hotels and shops they can speak “great and mighty” quite well) and speak reasonable English, so there were no language problems at all, although I don’t know Greek at all, except for the three words “politeness.” The Greeks understand that tourists are their only source of income, so they are very welcoming and friendly. But at the same time they are leisurely, a little optional, non-punctual, relaxed and do not particularly strain themselves. They blame “Europe” for all their troubles and expect someone to help them. To be honest, it’s hard for me to imagine that these are the descendants of precisely those great Hellenes who stood at the origins of democracy and modern European civilization (although the same can be said about the Italians, who are so different from my ideas about the Romans during the empire).

In general, despite some disadvantages, and there are enough of them in any country, because nothing can be ideal, we enjoyed our holiday in Rhodes and returned full of positive things. The week was extremely eventful, bright, and Greek music sounding everywhere and surrounding views that fully correspond to stereotypical ideas about Greece: olive groves with freely roaming goats create the necessary ambiance and unique flavor.

So I give Rhodes a solid four plus and recommend going there at least once. It will appeal to beach lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and, of course, those who like to discover something new, visit sights and broaden their horizons.

The only condition is that if you want to have fun and have peace while sleeping, book a hotel located north of the town center, it is much quieter there than in other areas of Faliraki.

Another undoubted advantage of Faliraki is its close proximity to the historical attractions of the island - the city of Rhodes and the ancient Acropolis of Lindos.

Afand

The village of Afandou is conveniently nestled around the north-eastern coast of Rhodes. One of the largest village villages on the island, Afandou's streets and courtyards are filled with fruit and olive trees. Afandou is home to the longest beach on the island of Rhodes, which occupies approximately 7 kilometers of sea coast. The sunbathing area is covered with golden sand, which smoothly turns into a smooth pebble layer, and then returns to golden sand. Afandou Beach is valued among tourists not only as an ideal place for sunbathing, but also as an excellent island golf spot.

Kalathos

Kalathos is a quaint little Greek village in eastern Rhodes that has a great bar, a delicious tavern dinner, and a huge, never-crowded Mediterranean beach for sunbathing. Those who decide to thoroughly get to know the island prefer to relax in Kalathos; this is an ideal place to study the history and main island attractions. Lindos and its prehistoric archaeological treasures are six kilometers away, and Kalathos itself offers an excellent atmosphere for quality relaxation.

Kolymbia

Kolymbia is one of the best beach resorts in Rhodes. The Kolymbia coast lies halfway between lively Faliraki and ancient Lindos. For a long time the resort remained rather intimate and unknown to anyone. Thanks to this, even today the beaches of Kolymbia are quite uncrowded and exceptionally clean, even at the height of summer. Along the Kolymbia beach, almost the entire area is marked with the Blue Flag, which indicates the environmental friendliness of these places.

Lindos

Narrow stone-paved streets, white houses, friendly locals and tame donkeys peacefully wandering around the town - this is the atmosphere in Lindos, on the east coast of Rhodes. This small village has powerful protection - all its architectural elements are under state protection, so nothing will disturb your peaceful and comfortable holiday in the penates of the ancient Greek island of civilization.

However, at night Lindos does not at all look like an old homebody - bars and taverns, cafes and restaurants come to life, a taste of the bright and noisy resort life bursts into the quiet seaside night...

Having planned a vacation in Lindos, everyone simply must visit the ancient Acropolis and touch the columns of the restored Temple of Athena. Close to the beautiful Lindos beach there is another unforgettable natural place - St. Paul's Bay. As legends say, the apostle once visited these parts. The chapel built in his honor also bears the name of the saint.

When planning to visit Lindos, take note that you should buy ceramics here as souvenirs; they are some of the best on the island. Not far from the resort there is an interesting tourist attraction - the Valley of Seven Springs, where people go to, as legends say, to be cleansed of sins in life-giving spring water. The distance from Lindos to the capital of the island, Rhodes, is approximately 50 km.

South of Lindos - from Lardos Bay to Plymiri - the best beaches of Rhodes are located on the coast. These are very quiet, very clean and very scenic places for swimming and sunbathing, which end at a very symbolic place on the island - Cape Prasonisi, where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas "kiss"....

A little further, to the south, tourists will find the resorts of Lachanya and Plymiri, inviting them to quiet sandy Mediterranean beaches where peace and quiet reign. Each hotel has a large space allocated here; they stand a little apart, but the recreational infrastructure and service will satisfy the most demanding needs.

Lindos hotels

Pefkos

The quiet village of Pefkos is located just 5 km from Lindos, just in the middle of fragrant pine groves! Those who are tired of the noise of cities, who complain of stress and depression, who are looking for peace and tranquility go to Pefkos on vacation. The sandy beach and the azure Mediterranean Sea can provide everything necessary for tourists yearning for peace.

The name of the resort of Pefkos comes from the name of the pine trees that line the beautiful local sandy beach. There was once a small fishing village here, but over time everything has changed. Cozy bars and restaurants, the color of local secluded streets, fresh air smelling of sun-warmed pine needles - this is how Pefkos greets vacationers... And very close by is lively, active Lindos!

Kiotari

The pebble-sand beach of Kiotari, a new island resort near Southern Rhodes, is worth booking a tour for married couples. Here are some undeniable arguments: the resort was simply created for this segment of tourists, there are a lot of offers for water sports and recreation, and in your free time from the beach, Kiotari also has somewhere to have fun - coastal bars and restaurants, excellent places for walks on the embankment, it is very convenient to get to Lindos, and even to the capital - Rhodes.

In addition, almost all hotels in Kiotari are located right on the coastline, right next to the sea.

Gennadi

Gennadi in the south of the island is a small fishing village nestled along the east coast of the island. Of course, it is not as popular among holidaymakers as its neighbors - Pefkos and Lindos, but, probably, it is thanks to this that Gennadi has managed to retain its traditional charm of a colorful Greek village - narrow cobbled stone streets, old-fashioned taverns, and next to it are ultra-modern fashionable European-style houses . How do you like this potpourri?

The beach of the village of Gennadi is covered with smooth pebbles; it is somewhat remote from the village, but this fact makes it even more attractive.

Tsambika

It’s worth remembering if only because it’s not only an excellent golden spot for sunbathing. Near Tsambika beach there is a functioning monastery, which gave the name to this beach. On religious holidays, which are held in honor of the Mother of God, women flock to the monastery, passionately wanting to have children.

Pilgrims climb the mountain to the monastery, overcoming 300 steps, to pray in front of the miraculous monastery icon and ask for the joy of motherhood. They say that many people manage to give the world a new life after this pilgrimage...

Lardos

In Lardos, inside the island, in the southeast, tourists seek out the local ancient flavor - take a walk in the old square, breathe in the smells of cypress trees warming in the sun, pray in the local Orthodox church and listen to the murmur of the Italian fountain.

Lunch time involves delicious feasts in bars and taverns, and we suggest devoting the rest of your free time to visiting the active monastery and the ruins of a Byzantine castle.

Prasonisi

Green Island (as the name of Cape Prasonisi sounds in translation) is located at the very southern end of Rhodes, at a distance of approximately 90 km from the capital. Fans and connoisseurs of windsurfing know that only here, from July to August, dry northern Meltemi winds blow, which are so valued among professionals involved in sailing sports.

People also go to Prasonisi for something exotic - to see the natural landmark of Rhodes, the place of “the kiss of two seas.” Here the stormy and temperamental Aegean and the warmed by the warm sun, the slightly relaxed and therefore lazy Mediterranean merge together...

Resorts of Rhodes on the west coast (Aegean Sea)

The resorts of Rhodes on the west coast have still been very little explored by European tourists; they are quite wild places and very sparsely populated. Only a few seaside villages have already established a tourism business, providing a high level of service and providing excellent conditions for recreation on the west coast of Rhodes. For the rest, everything is still ahead; the time of discovery is just beginning...

Kremasti

The small resort town of Kremasti is located 12 km from the capital of the island of Rhodes. Tourists are attracted here by the excellent pebble beach and the local attraction - the Valley of the Butterflies.

Kremasti Beach is a long coastal strip of sand and pebbles that stretches along the length of the entire town. In the middle of the beach resort is a green central square, where there is room for several taverns and countless shops. For nightlife, beach fun and historical sights, you need to go to neighboring Rhodes - it is nearby, 20 minutes away.

Pastida

Pastida is a quiet little Greek village in the north of the island. The entire life of the village revolves around a few local taverns surrounding the quaint village square. There are no cars at all on the narrow streets, everything here functions and lives only for the local population and pedestrian tourists - fragrant olive and citrus groves, a leisurely flow of life and recreation... The main beach, Kremasti, is very close.

Ialyssos

Ialyssos or Trianda is a small, charming beach resort on the western Aegean coast of Rhodes. Comfortable hotels simply overlook the embankment, and right in the center of the town, traditional Greek taverns await tourists in the evenings, full of delicious smells coming from hearty Mediterranean dishes being prepared.

Not far away is the lively, cheerful Faliraki, and just nearby are the historical rarities of the capital Rhodes.

Ixia

Ixia is a beautiful man-made beach resort located on the northwestern tip of the island of Rhodes. The resort's recreational infrastructure is built around the coastline of the Aegean Sea, forming the Gulf of Ixia.

Along the town's embankment there are luxury multi-storey hotels and a whole list of restaurants distinguished by high quality service. Further, if you move a little away from the coast, a quiet residential area of the town begins, closed from the rest of Rhodes by the Akramitis mountains.

Ixia is the perfect seaside center of Rhodes for surfing, its pebble beach is ideal for this sport and relaxation - it is well equipped for water sailing.

The coast around the beach village of Ialyssos and its neighbor Ixia is a kind of Rhodesian mix, consisting of luxury hotel complexes, distinguished by their particular respectability and rich, varied nightlife. Surfing competitions are often held here on the beaches of the Aegean Sea in the west of Rhodes.

And nearby is the capital city of Rhodes, filled with restaurants, colorful hotels, all kinds of attractions and usual city entertainment... By the way, the international airport is a 15-minute drive from the western beach resorts in Rhodes.

How to get from Ixia and other resorts of Western Rhodes to the Mediterranean Sea and Eastern Rhodes

The answer is very simple: the eastern coast of the island of Rhodes, which is washed by the Mediterranean Sea, is served by regular buses of the carrier company KTEL. Look for the bus terminal on Rimini Square, Rhodes city. This is where all flights to Eastern Rhodes depart from.

Buses depart from the bus terminal on Averof Street, Paradisi Area in Rhodes to take you to the Mediterranean beaches of Kallithea.

When looking for an economical hotel for a beach holiday, don’t miss the chance to explore the interior of Rhodes. It is worth a look at Archangelos - this is a colorful beach resort, second in size and size after the island capital. Another village worthy of attention is Askilipio. Here you can see the Byzantine Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (XIV century), and in the vicinity of the village is the Monolithos fortress, built in the 15th century. It once served as a defensive structure for the Crusader knights.

Near the small settlement of Laerma is the largest monastery of the Archangel Michael in Rhodes. 8 km from the capital, near the village of Ialysos, Mount Filerimos rises; on its top, the remains of the ancient acropolis are still preserved.

If a flight to the island is planned for July, you should turn your attention to the eastern region and, in particular, to the resort towns of Kiotari, Lardos, Lindos, Kolymbia, Kallithea and Faliraki. There is also a huge water park, a visit to which in hot weather will be especially appropriate. The listed regions also have a large number of Orthodox sites that will be interesting to visit.

The best places to relax during this period are the same eastern resorts of the island, as well as some western ones - Ixia, Theologos and Ialyssos. Having arrived on the Greek island in question during the specified period, you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity to relax on the beach by staying in a hotel closer to the coastline. If you wish, you can also visit the city of Faliraki - a large settlement with a vibrant nightlife taking place in local clubs, restaurants, and other entertainment venues. Throughout August, various festivals are held in Rhodes, which will also be interesting for tourists from Russia to visit.

About the cost of the holiday

Many travelers planning to relax on the island in question are concerned with the question of how much the trip might cost? Practice shows that Rhodes is not a very expensive resort when compared with others located in the Mediterranean region.

As a rule, the highest cost of vacation is at the height of the holiday season, which occurs in July and August. In June and May you can relax here cheaper, but reviews from vacationers say that in these months you can encounter insufficiently warmed seas, which will negatively affect the overall picture of your vacation and will also cause a lack of positive impressions. You can encounter the same problems if you visit the island in September, as well as in October.

Experts in the tourism business recommend using the services of agencies rather than planning a trip on your own. This is due to the fact that flights to the island, as well as accommodation and food in decent conditions in Greece, are quite expensive. So, if you use the services of a tour operator, a vacation in Rhodes (Greece) in an all-inclusive hotel with meals and flights will cost about 65-70 thousand rubles, which is quite acceptable. At the same time, the cost of staying in the same conditions for 10 days, but without a voucher, will be about 90-100 thousand. It should be noted that the difference is quite significant.

If you want to have the most inexpensive holiday possible, tourists recommend renting a room in the private sector with a kitchen. In such a situation, you will need to cook your own food from products purchased at the nearest supermarket, but you will be able to save a lot of money.

Special attention should be paid to some recommendations that experienced travelers leave in their reviews.

Some tourists note that while staying on the island, you definitely need to rent a car, despite the fact that the total area of the island is relatively small. Travelers say that having a personal car makes it possible to independently visit the most interesting places in Rhodes. In addition, this travel option will not be as expensive as purchasing an excursion package in specific destinations. To rent a car, simply having money is not enough. To do this, the tenant must have a driver's license. Moreover, his driving experience must be at least one year.

Reviews of Rhodes often mention the water park. Absolutely all travelers who have visited the island recommend visiting it. In addition to a huge number of water activities, the park has several attractions, as well as areas for safe recreation for children. It is recommended to get to this place by rented car, or, in the absence of one, by taxi or regular bus going in this direction.

Many tourists recommend spending their honeymoon in Rhodes, arguing that the island has a romantic atmosphere all around, and hotels now and then offer special conditions and serious discounts for newlyweds.

Excursions

As for excursion programs, the most often recommended is the “Mediterranean Grand Tour”, which involves traveling along the east coast of the island and getting acquainted with the attractions located here. According to tourists, it is best to go on trips around the island in the morning or at lunchtime - at other times tourists may face sweltering heat.

Practice shows that it is best to purchase excursion tours from official agencies, and not from individuals, since otherwise there is a high risk of becoming a victim of scammers.
