Al Maktoum (airport): description, reviews. Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) in Dubai: diagram, terminal plan, transfer to the city

  • 19.02.2024

Everyone knows that the ruler of the Emirate of Dubai and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid bin Said al Maktoum, has many children and wives.

Sheikh Mohammed

Nobody except the Sheikh probably knows the exact number. I will not risk stating any numbers. More than 20 officially recognized children - that's for sure. Two well-known wives: Sheikha Hind al Maktoum - the main wife, the mother of twelve children, whom no one photographed, and the youngest - Princess Haya of Jordan, the mother of two, whom we all know well.

Prince Hamdan, the second son of Sheikh Mohammed and Hind, has been declared the official heir to the emirate. For some reason, the eldest son Rashid was removed from inheritance, whether he was rude to dad, or loves women too much, it is not known. However, it turned out that this is not entirely true.

There is very little information on the Internet. But the Maktoum family members themselves are extremely active on social networks; almost all of the sheikh’s children have their own accounts, which they constantly update. Many echo each other. Actually, it was only thanks to this that we managed to find out something.

It is known for certain that Muhammad’s first-born daughter, Sheikha Manal, was born in 1977. Presumably from his Lebanese wife. She is happily married, she has children, a million photos with all her relatives on the Internet. But this is not about her.

In 1979, the Sheikh married his 17-year-old cousin and, at the same time, second cousin, Sheikha Hind al Maktoum.

Lyrical digression: it is unknown when she received the title of main/senior wife, but she is definitely not the first (these are different concepts).

On Arab forums, Dubai residents themselves (mostly women, of course) explain that since a child has the title of sheikh or sheikh, this means that Sheikh Mohammed definitely married the child’s mother, even if he later quickly divorced. I suspect this is some kind of law in the Emirates, because a Muslim does not have to get married in order to officially recognize the child. Maybe it’s just the sheikh status for the child. Don't know . Just in case, I will call everyone wives.

So, before Hind there was a Lebanese wife, Manal's mother.

In March 1980, Sheikha Maitha was born to a sheikh from a Moroccan wife, you have seen her many times, this is the same famous athlete. And she participates always and everywhere, and carried the UAE flag at the Olympics in London, and won a lot of things.

At the time of Mayta's birth, Sheikha Hind was already pregnant with her first child and gave birth to her daughter Hessa in November 1980. Everything is fine with her too, married, children, everything is fine.

But the sheikh still does not have a son. And, at the moment when Hind was wearing Hessa, the sheikh starts a relationship with, as rumors say, a German girl. In any case, the girl was of the Northern European type. And in March 1981 she gave birth to a boy.

The long-awaited son of his Arab father turned out to be unusual. They named him Marwan. One of the traditional names in the Maktoum clan. Sheikh Marwan bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Saeed al Maktoum. Which literally means "Sheikh Marwan, son of Muhammad, son of Rashid, son of Said of the Maktoum family." The name is also the pedigree. The sheikh recognized the boy because his name is on all the lists of the sheikh's official children.

In August 1981, the Sheikh's Moroccan wife gave birth to a second daughter, Shamsa. And only in November 1981 Hind gave birth to a son, Rashid. So he is the second son of Sheikh Mohammed, and not the first, as they write everywhere.

There are no photographs of Marwan on my father’s website. The other seven sons are there, but Marwan is not. I think this is due to the fact that he is not an Arab, although he is a Muslim. And also with his appearance. It's very different from everyone else.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that many people confuse the son of a sheikh with the son of his second cousin, they are almost full namesakes, the name is only different in the fourth generation. And they rarely write until the fourth. So, the man in the photo below is not the same Marwan! This is easy to check on his page, where the man constantly posts photos of his real father and brothers.

Also Marwan, also a sheikh, but a second cousin, not the son of a ruler.

Currently, Marwan al Maktoum lives in London. He is married to Dalal al Marzougi, a girl from a very old and wealthy sultanal family that ruled for a thousand years just across the bay from Dubai, now Iran. My wife has been a development director at a large oil company for many years.

They have two sons, Muhammad and Rashid (in honor of their father and grandfather). These are the first grandchildren of Sheikh Mohammed in the male line!! The other sons have no children yet, only daughters.

Marwan served in the Dubai Army. Happens periodically in the emirate. He communicates with relatives. Sorry, there are not enough photos. I didn’t find a single adult photo with my father.

Sheikh Marwan is a head taller and larger than all his relatives. He's blond with blue eyes!

Dubai is the most incredible city in the world. It is simply impossible to remain indifferent to him; he surprises and amazes at every step. Even if you come here for the tenth time, you will not be able to firmly say that you know Dubai.

Naturally, getting to know the city begins from the airport. In Dubai, it is one of the busiest on the planet, so at the moment an incredible surprise is being prepared for travelers - Al Maktoum. This airport is a real fairy-tale city from which you simply won’t want to return to the real world.

Dubai: An Arabian Tale

We don’t think it’s worth talking about all the wonders of Dubai. Most tourists have probably visited this city and appreciated the magnificent beaches, exciting shopping and amazing architecture of skyscrapers that rise above what was once a lifeless desert.

It is not surprising that the international one looks like the city itself. It is luxuriously decorated and filled with friendly staff. It’s only in recent years that tourists have begun to notice that moving around the airport has become quite difficult. Everywhere there are crowds of people rushing to catch their flight. According to analysts, this complex is at the limit of its capabilities. For several years now it has been operating at maximum capacity and requires immediate unloading.

Enterprising Arabs actively took on the problem and in 2010 introduced the world to Al Maktoum - an airport that was significantly ahead of its time. Despite the fact that it is still under construction, all travelers predict it to be the most luxurious air gate in the world.

"Al Maktoum": a brief description

Al Maktoum International Airport is located almost in the center of Dubai, only forty-four kilometers separate it from the main streets. There is a distance of seventy kilometers between the still main airport and the new air gates, so you should not purchase transit flights in the future that involve traveling between these two points.

The new airport is located close to the most fashionable area of the city - Dubai World Central, and the artificial island so beloved by tourists is very close.

In the near future, Al Maktoum is planned to be launched at full capacity, which will significantly reduce passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport. Soon the combination Dubai - Al Maktoum will become familiar to all tourists flying to the United Arab Emirates. The airport will have to handle more than half of all scheduled and charter flights of all airlines in the world.

Opening of a new international airport

The first flight was accepted at the new airport in September 2010. This allowed tourists to appreciate the scale of the future airport-city, as local residents already call it.

By 2013, it already had several cargo terminals and one passenger terminal. The runways are adapted to accommodate aircraft of all known types. One cargo terminal is capable of receiving up to 250,000 tons of cargo per year.

Al Maktoum - the airport of dreams

The airport is currently at the testing stage. Some of its rooms are not yet fully completed, but even without them this incredible complex is simply amazing.

"Al Maktoum" consists of four airport terminal buildings, each of which is made in its own style and is replete with all kinds of details that attract the tourist's eye during the inspection. The airport's planned capacity is about 160 million passengers per year; cargo reception is limited to 12 million tons. Such capabilities make Al Maktoum the most powerful in the world.

But what makes the new air gates surprising is not this fact, but the very relationship to the airport terminal infrastructure. We can say that Al Maktoum is an airport located inside a complex system. It includes a lot of facilities - villas, cottages, hotels with a high level of service, cinemas and even kindergartens and schools. There has never been a project like this before.

The ambitiousness of the architects served as the reason for the endless postponement of the final deadline for the completion of the complex. Construction is now scheduled to be completed in four years. Since last year, most of what Al Maktoum will be has been put into operation.

Airport: reviews from first travelers

Tourists who were lucky enough to visit the new airport noted its scale. There are currently forty-two flight check-in counters in the building, which significantly reduces waiting time in line.

Travelers have access to regular and online registration. Any of them ends forty minutes before boarding. Please note that all holidaymakers flying into Dubai must undergo a retinal scan. This process awaits you at the new airport.

All tourists note that Al Maktoum has a lot of infrastructure. There are a large number of recreation areas, from the simplest to VIP class. You can have a snack in various cafes and restaurants: all the most popular fast food chains, as well as world leaders in the restaurant business, are represented here. Passengers always have access to free Internet.

If you love shopping, you will greatly enjoy the duty free zone. True, passengers note that, in terms of rubles, prices in local stores are a little high. But Arabic sweets and other local goods can be bought at a very affordable price.

Now, knowing that a new international airport has opened in Dubai, when purchasing tickets, carefully look at the name of the arrival point. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to see the beautiful Al Maktoum with your own eyes.

Well, thank God, we arrived safely. Involuntarily, you will mentally remember this in our turbulent times. Some completely peaceful civilian planes are shot down by someone who knows not, and some disappear into space without a trace after takeoff. Fortunately, nothing abnormal happened to us on this flight, complete relaxation and relaxation, whether you like it or not, there is nothing else to do during the flight except rest and relax. Where, where, and I’ve been to the UAE dozens of times, traveled far and wide, but every time something elusive pleasantly surprised me and lifted my spirits. Now I caught myself thinking that I finally understood what it is, this is, of course, an abundance of generous sun. There is probably never bad weather in the UAE, but there is plenty of sun all year round, and this makes us happy. Therefore, if anyone lacks sunshine, you are guaranteed to find it here in sufficient quantities.

Al Maktoum International Airport (IATA: DWC, ICAO: OMDW) is an airport in Dubai (UAE). Located in Dubai World Central. Opened July 27, 2010. It received its name in honor of the ruling family of Dubai, from which the late Sheikh of Dubai Maktoum ibn Rashid al-Maktoum came.

The throughput capacity of the hub after construction should be 160 million passengers per year and 12-14 million tons of cargo per year. The airport was planned to open in 2008, but the dates were constantly being pushed back. By the end of 2007, the airport managed to change several working names: “Jebel Ali International Airport”, “Jebel Ali Airport City” and “Dubai World Central International Airport”, and received its official name in November 2007. On June 27, 2010, the first phase of commissioning the airport was completed exploitation.

The first airlines to receive service at the new airport were Rus Aviation, Skyline and Aerospace Consortium. Following the completion of the first phase, the airport launched one runway capable of accommodating A380 aircraft, 64 aircraft parking spaces, one cargo terminal with a capacity of up to 250 thousand tons of cargo per year and a passenger terminal, which after launch will be able to serve about five million passengers per year.

On 23 February 2011, the UAE Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) completed its safety and security checks, standard operating procedures and general inspection of Al Maktoum International Airport and issued a certificate for general air transport, both cargo and passenger.

Completion of construction is planned for 2015. After it, Al Maktoum Airport should receive five runways, four air terminals and could become the largest in the world in terms of cargo and passenger turnover. Al Maktoum International Airport Dubai is the new airport of the Emirates. The air hub was opened in July 2010. For the first 3 years it accepted only cargo planes, and since 2013 - civil flights.

Currently, the airport is in the final stages of construction. Currently only one runway is open. Once completed, Al Maktoum is expected to become the largest airport in the world. It will be capable of serving more than 220 million passengers per year. According to the final design, Al Maktoum will include 5 runways, 3 civil terminals and 1 for cargo flights. It is worth noting that Russian companies took part in the construction of the air hub. Thus, GLONASS developed technical systems inside the airport. Russian developments were used to create control systems for engineering structures and other infrastructure facilities.

Al Maktoum is named after Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Maktoum, who died in 2006.

The air hub is part of a giant complex. Where Al Maktoum Airport is located, a free economic zone, Dubai World Central, will be built, which will include shopping and business centers. The total cost of the entire project is $32 billion. The airport is located in the center of the new zone on an area of 140 sq. km. The same area will host the World Expo in 2020.

In reviews of Al Maktoum Airport, passengers note the cleanliness and spaciousness of the terminals. Since few flights depart from the airport, there are practically no long queues for registration and control. The main drawback, according to most passengers, is the lack of direct metro trains - to get to Al Maktoum you have to change to a bus, which significantly increases the transfer time. Also, many tourists are disappointed by the modest selection of goods in Duty Free stores and the lack of Tax Free return points.

The Russian-language scoreboard can be viewed on the Yandex service. Schedules. Current flights and their statuses are displayed here in real time.

Parking

There is an extensive parking area for 800 cars in front of the passenger terminal. Parking at the airport terminal (in the departure and arrival areas) is free for a short period of time.

Car rent

At Al Maktoum Airport there are several counters for renting a car from popular services: Hetz, EuropCar and others.

Al Maktoum is an international airport in the United Arab Emirates, which could eventually become a large air gateway like Dubai International Airport. This airport is still just gaining momentum and works with a limited number of airlines. This is not surprising - the airport was built recently (cargo operations began in 2010, and passenger traffic began in 2013), in addition, the airport is still in a state of ongoing construction.

General information

The airport is located 37 kilometers southwest of the main city of the UAE, Dubai, and another international airport, Dubai, is 70 kilometers away.

The airport's website is combined with the official website of another airport, the giant international airport in Dubai - www.dubaiairports.ae. The official languages of the site are English and Arabic; there is no translation into Russian. On the website you will find an online board of arrivals and departures of aircraft, flight schedules in the “Flights” section. All information can be obtained 24 hours a day by calling +971-4-224-5555.

From the history of creation

The international airport called Al Maktoum (IATA code - DWC), according to the plan of the UAE government, will become part of the huge Dubai World Central project, which will include a variety of facilities for a simply fantastic total amount of more than 32 billion dollars.

This is interesting. The working name of this modern airport changed several times during its short history, until finally the airport was named after the head of the ruling family of Dubai, Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Maktoum, who died in 2006.

The airport is located in the very center of the DWC area on an area exceeding 140 square kilometers. Construction is planned in stages and will be carried out over several years, while the first phase of commissioning the airport has been completed. This happened in 2010, three years after the commissioning of the cargo terminal.

For now, the airport operates on one asphalt runway, which, however, can accommodate aircraft of various classes, including the Airbus A380 and cargo aircraft.

The final plans include the construction of five GDP, three passenger and one cargo terminals. All together can make the airport the largest harbor for aircraft from all over the world.

Thus, it is planned that the throughput capacity of Dubai Al Maktoum Airport will be over 220 million people, cargo turnover will exceed 16 million tons of cargo, and the airport will become the largest not only for Dubai, but for the whole world.

It is also important that the airport on the map is located in close proximity to the site of the 2020 World Exhibition. There are also plans to transfer the main UAE carrier Emirates to Al Maktoum by 2025. It is expected that once all airport facilities are fully operational, it will become the largest international hub, surpassing airports such as Atlanta and Beijing in terms of traffic within the next decade. He has already left behind the famous Heathrow air hub.

This is interesting. From the very beginning of the construction of the airport, the Russian network operator GLONASS participated in the implementation of the project, in particular in the development of systems inside the airport. In equipping ground services, Russian developments were used in the field of equipping ground transport serving the runway and apron, creating control systems for utility networks and other airport infrastructure.

Flight Destinations

From here planes depart to almost all directions of the world. Airlines that fly from this airport include:

  • Lufthansa;
  • Turkish Airlines;
  • British Airways;
  • Air France and others, 22 companies in total.

Direct flights are organized to Frankfurt am Main, Kuwait, Sofia, Amsterdam, Budapest, Bucharest, etc.

From Russia there are flights from the following cities:

  • Moscow;
  • St. Petersburg;
  • Yekaterinburg;
  • Novosibirsk;
  • Kazan;
  • Omsk.

Terminal

The location of infrastructure and other airport facilities can be seen in the diagram.

The terminal has 12 outputs. There are 42 check-in counters where you can complete the normal check-in process and drop off your luggage. You can register online.

On international airlines, check-in begins 2.5 hours before departure. Completion: 40 minutes before flight. When passing through passport control, a retinal scan procedure is performed.

Services

The airport provides the following services:

  • for disabled people - special chairs for movement;
  • the medical aid station provides emergency medical services if necessary;
  • dedicated Marhaba concierge service;
  • provision of prayer rooms;
  • information boards and advice from airport employees everywhere.

Shops, cafes

At the airport, passengers will find a large selection of goods in duty-free shops. A large selection of cafes and restaurants allows passengers with different income levels to take advantage of catering services. Bank terminals are available.

Hotels

Unlike neighboring Dubai Airport, this airport does not have its own hotels in the transit area. However, there is no shortage of places to stay within a short distance from the airport. Thus, within ten kilometers, passengers will find a huge selection of hotels of different star ratings with an excellent level of service and at different prices.

Al Maktoum Airport does not yet have such truly royal luxury and a full range of services as in neighboring Dubai. However, it is clear that the future is no worse for him. With the full completion of the DWC zones, the airport will acquire a high-speed railway, currently only in the project, will be connected to all highways in the country and will become the main air hub in the DWC.

Transport to the airport

Transport links between the two airports are well organized, making the movement of transit passengers convenient. So, you can get from Al Maktoum to Dubai Airport by the following means of transport:

  • taxi - the average price of a trip to Dubai is 80 euros;
  • buses from the city transport department - the cost of the trip is 3 dirhams (AED), buses arrive every hour, you can get there in about forty minutes;
  • by private vehicle, you can order a transfer - price 40 euros, travel time - approximately 30 minutes.

You can get into the city from the metro station (Ibn Battuta station) by bus number 55 and 55 and (Satwa). Then take the metro to anywhere in the city.

There is a parking lot with 800 spaces next to the terminal, with exits from the arrivals and departures areas.
