Aircraft Passenger Safety

Specialists from the University of Greenwich (London) conducted a study in 2008, the data for which was taken from an analysis of the circumstances of the death of 105 people in plane crashes. Also, almost 2 thousand people who survived the plane crash were interviewed.

The results showed that the safest seats are at the aisle, no more than five rows from the emergency exit.

According to a number of experts, the seats of flight attendants are safer than passenger seats, since they are located backwards. It was even proposed to deploy the passenger seats, but the innovation was not implemented due to the unwillingness of passengers to fly backwards. In addition, when the aircraft is flying in cruise mode with a positive angle of attack, passengers sitting facing the flight will "crawl" out of their seats, since in this position of the aircraft the seat cushion is at a negative angle to the horizon.

Is it very typical for Russian aircraft to fall from Ukrainian missiles? Have you counted a lot?

The mention of the Ukrainian missile after such events sounds blasphemy:

2 On the night of June 14, 2014, a military transport aircraft of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Il-76 was shot down by a shot from an anti-aircraft missile system and a long burst from a large-caliber machine gun while approaching an airfield in Luhansk. Dmitry Tsarkov, who held the post of commander of the 21st Air Defense Corps of the USSR in 1978, reports to Vladimir Dmitriev, who at that time was the commander of the 10th Air Defense Army of the USSR, that the air defense is ready to shoot down the intruder. Dmitriev did not give permission, saying that we could shoot down our plane, the exact belonging of the plane was not yet clear. The intruder walked at a speed of 15 kilometers per minute (900 km / h). At this time, the intruder crossed the border of the USSR. A flight of fighters was raised into the sky.
The aircraft was detected by Soviet air defense radars and was initially identified as a Boeing 747. An anti-aircraft missile system was put on alert. A Su-15TM ("Flegon-F") fighter under the control of Captain A. Bosov was sent to intercept.

According to the testimony of the liner captain Kim Chang Ki, the interceptor approached his plane from the right side (and not from the left, as required by the rules of the international organization civil aviation- ICAO). The captain claims to have reduced speed and turned on navigation lights to indicate readiness to follow the Soviet fighter for landing. Captain Kim Chang Ki's attempts to contact the interceptor pilot on 121.5 were detected by an air traffic control tower in Rovaniemi, Finland. According to the official statement of the Soviet side, the liner evaded the requirement to land. When the pilot of the interceptor reported that the intruder was actually not the 747th, but the 707th Boeing, the command decided that it was an RC-135 electronic reconnaissance aircraft (produced on the basis of the Boeing-707 airliner) and gave the order to destroy goals.

According to the American radio intercept, the interceptor pilot for several minutes tried to convince the command to cancel the order, as he saw the emblem of the KAL airline on the liner and inscriptions in hieroglyphs, however, after confirming the order, he fired two P-60 missiles at the liner. The first of them missed the target, and the second exploded, tearing off part of the left wing, causing the plane to depressurize and killing two passengers with shrapnel.

Due to the depressurization of the cabin, the liner began an emergency descent and disappeared from the radar screens of the Soviet air defense system. The interceptor pilot also lost a damaged liner in the clouds.

Over the next hour, emergency flight 902 flew at low altitude across the entire Kola Peninsula, looking for a place for an emergency landing and, after several unsuccessful attempts, landed in the gathering twilight on the ice of Lake Korpiyarvi, already in Karelia. Throughout this time, the air defense did not have any information about the fate and location of the aircraft.

The USSR refused to cooperate in the investigation of this incident with international experts and did not provide data from the black boxes seized from the plane. The plane itself was disassembled and taken out in parts. The Korean airline abandoned it in order not to pay for the evacuation of the plane. 95 passengers were taken to Kem, and then to Murmansk airport. On April 23, 1978, they were transferred to representatives of the US Consulate General in Leningrad and Pan-American Airlines and sent to Helsinki. Su-15 pilot Captain A. Bosov was awarded the Order of the Red Star for completing a combat mission.

The Boeing commander, the highest-class pilot Lee Chang Hugh, a former military pilot, managed to land a little-controlled 200-ton aircraft on a frozen lake. This saved the lives of the rest of the passengers. The Boeing commander was later interrogated. He said that he had fought as a fighter pilot back in Vietnam. He graduated from the war with the rank of colonel. Then he worked for 10 years in a civilian airline, and the experience of flights on the route of flight 902 is also 10 years. He has been flying with this crew for 7 years. The last flight before this flight on this route was a week ago. The weather was good during the flight. When asked how you could go so off course, the commander replied that the navigation equipment allegedly failed.

Many years later, a flight map of Flight 902 was published based on declassified black box data, showing that the plane, passing the Amsterdam-Anchorage section, began a smooth wide right turn shortly after reaching Iceland. This turn was too smooth to be done manually, and the explanation can only be a malfunction of the navigation equipment.

Where to aim? Maggie crashed onto the station's stone floor, but his fall was slowed down when he broke through the glass roof the moment before. It hurts, but it is salutary. A haystack will do, too. Some lucky ones survived, ending up in a dense bush. Thicket is also good, although you can run into some branch. Snow? Just perfect. Swamp? A soft, vegetated bog is the most desirable option. Hamilton recounts an incident when a skydiver with an unopened parachute landed directly on high-voltage wires. The wires sprung and threw him up, keeping him alive. The most dangerous surface is water. Like concrete, it is practically incompressible. The result of falling on the ocean surface will be about the same as falling on the sidewalk. The only difference is that the asphalt, alas! - will not open beneath you to absorb the shattered body forever.

Without losing sight of your intended goal, take care of your body position. To slow down your fall, act like a skydiver on a skydive. Spread your legs and arms wider, throw your head back higher, straighten your shoulders, and by yourself you will turn your chest to the ground. Your drag will increase immediately, and there will be room for maneuver. The main thing is not to relax. In your, frankly, predicament, the question of how to prepare for a meeting with the ground remains, unfortunately, not fully resolved. An article on this topic was published in the 1942 journal War Medicine. It said: "In trying to avoid injury, load distribution and compensation play a big role." Hence the recommendation - you need to fall flat. On the other hand, the 1963 report published Federal agency Aviation Administration (FAA), claims that the classic grouping adopted among skydivers will be optimal for saving life: legs together, knees higher, shins pressed to thighs. The same source noted that training in sports such as wrestling or acrobatics greatly contributes to survival in a disaster. When falling on hard surfaces, it would be especially useful to have some skills in martial arts.

Japanese skydiver Yasuhiro Kubo trains like this: he throws his parachute out of the plane, and then jumps out himself. By tightening the process to the limit, he catches up with his equipment, puts on and then pulls the ring. In 2000, Kubo jumped at an altitude of 3 km and spent 50 seconds in free fall until he caught up with his backpack with his parachute. All of these useful skills can be practiced in a safer environment, for example, in free fall simulators - vertical wind tunnels. However, simulators will not allow you to work out the most crucial stage - a meeting with the ground.

If a water surface awaits you below, prepare for quick and decisive action. According to the surviving amateurs of jumping from high bridges, we can conclude that the optimal entry into the water would be a "soldier", that is, feet first. Then you will have at least some chance of getting to the surface alive.

On the other hand, the famous cliff divers who hone their skills near Acapulco believe that it is better to enter the water head first. At the same time, they put their hands with intertwined fingers in front of the head, protecting it from impact. You can choose any of these poses, but try to maintain the parachuting position until the very last second. Then, above the water itself, if you choose to dive like a soldier, we strongly recommend that you strain your buttocks with all your might. Explaining why would not be very decent, but you can probably guess it yourself.

Whatever surface is waiting for you below, in no case land on your head. Researchers from the Institute for Highway Safety have concluded that head injury is the leading cause of death in these situations. If you are still being carried head first, it is better to land on your face. It is safer than hitting the back of the head or the top of the skull.

07:02:19 Height 300 meters

If, having fallen out of the plane, you started reading this article, then by now you have come just to these lines. You already have the initial course, and now it's time to pull yourself together and focus on the task before you. However, here is some additional information.

Statistics show that in the event of a disaster, it is more profitable to be a crew member or a child, and if there is a choice, it is better to crash in a military plane. Over the past 40 years, at least 12 plane crashes have been recorded, when only one person survived. On this list, four were crew members and seven were passengers under the age of 18. The survivors include Mohammed el-Fateh Osman, a two-year-old child who survived the crash of a Boeing in Sudan in 2003 after landing in the wreckage. Last June, when Yemenia Airways crashed near the Comoros, only 14-year-old Bahia Bakari survived.

The survival of the crew members can be associated with more reliable passive safety systems, but why children are more often left alive is not yet clear. The FAA studies show that children, especially those under the age of four, have more flexible bones, more relaxed muscles and a higher percentage of subcutaneous fat, which effectively protects internal organs. People of small stature - if their head does not protrude from the backs of aircraft seats - are well protected from flying debris. With a low body weight, the steady-state falling speed will also be lower, and a smaller frontal section reduces the chance of hitting when landing on any sharp object.

So, we have arrived. Hit. Are you still alive? And what are your actions? If you escaped with minor injuries, you can get up and smoke, as did the British Nicholas Alkemeid, the rear gunner, who in 1944, after falling from a six-kilometer height, landed in a snow-covered thicket. If it's no joke, then there is still a lot of trouble ahead.

Let us recall the case of Juliana Kopke. In 1971, on Christmas Eve, she flew in a Lockheed Electra. The liner exploded somewhere over the Amazon. The 17-year-old German woman regained consciousness the next morning under the canopy of the jungle. She was strapped into her seat, and there were piles of Christmas gifts lying around. Wounded, all alone, she forced herself not to think about her dead mother. Instead, she focused on the advice of her biologist father: "Once lost in the jungle, you will go out to the people, following the flow of water." Kopke walked along forest streams, which gradually merged into rivers. She walked around crocodiles and beat in shallow water with a stick to scare away the stingrays. Somewhere, having stumbled, she lost her shoe, only a torn mini-skirt remained from her clothes. She had only a bag of sweets to eat, and she had to drink dark, dirty water. She ignored the broken collarbone and the inflamed open wounds.

Today we decided to remember incredible cases, a list of plane crashes with multi-seat aircraft, as a result of which, of all those on board, only one person remained alive.

On June 14, 1943, a plane carrying American soldiers on vacation crashed in Australia. In conditions of poor visibility due to fog, the plane touched the treetops and crashed. Only Foy Kenneth Roberts survived (in total there were 41 soldiers on board ), who received severe craniocerebral trauma. Doctors managed to save Roberts and he lived until 2004. However, as a result of his injuries, he forgot everything about the accident and lost the ability to speak.

Julianne Dealer Kopke survived a plane crash after falling from a height of 3 km

On December 23, 1971, 500 kilometers from the capital of Peru, Lima, as a result of falling into a vast thunderstorm area, a passenger plane actually collapsed in the air at an altitude of more than three kilometers.

“Suddenly an amazing silence reigned around me. The plane disappeared. I must have been unconscious and then came to my senses. I flew, spinning in the air, and could see the forest approaching rapidly below me "

Seventeen-year-old girl Julianne Dealer Kopke became the only survivor - she was fastened with a belt to a row of chairs and fell into the dense jungle. In the fall, she broke her collarbone, injured her arm and received a moderate head injury. For 9 days Juliana wandered through the jungle, trying not to leave the stream, believing that sooner or later he would lead her to civilization. Also, the stream gave the girl water. Nine days later, Juliana found a canoe and a hiding place in which she hid and waited. Soon she was found in this shelter by lumberjacks.

On January 26, 1972, Croatian terrorists blew up a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 passenger plane belonging to JAT Yugoslav Airlines over the Czech town of Serbska Kamenice. The board followed from Copenhagen to Zagreb, there were 28 people on board. The bomb planted in luggage compartment, detonated at an altitude of 10160 m. 27 passengers and crew members died, but the 22-year-old flight attendant Vesna Vulovich survived, having fallen from an altitude of more than 10 km.

Vesna Vulovic

Vesna Vulovic after a plane crash fell from a height of 10160 m and survived

When falling from a height of 10160 meters (the case is a record for survivors of a fall from great height ) received severe injuries to the spine and skull, was unconscious when she was discovered. After that, she was in a coma for almost a month, the total duration of treatment was about one and a half years. After recovery, she was transferred to ground work in the airline, in Yugoslavia was considered a folk heroine.

Larisa Savitskaya

On August 24, 1981, passenger and military aircraft collided over the territory of the USSR. The only survivor was the passenger Larisa Savitskaya, who ended up in the wreckage of the plane, where there were chairs in which she took refuge. When falling from a height of more than five kilometers, Savitskaya received serious spinal injuries, craniocerebral trauma, and lost almost all of her teeth. For three days, she waited for rescuers, as the wreckage fell in the taiga. Unlike Vesna, Vulovich did not receive much support from the state: the fact of the disaster was hiding, individual injuries she received did not allow her to register a disability and receive support from the state, she was paid a lump sum of 75 rubles as a survivor of the plane crash.

Larisa Savitskaya spent three days in the taiga after the plane crash

On January 13, 1995, an airplane crashed in Colombia, making an emergency landing in a swampy area. The landing was unsuccessful, when it hit the ground, the ship fell apart and exploded. Only nine-year-old girl Erica Delgado survived, whom her mother threw from the plane at the moment when it began to fall apart. Erica fell into a pile of seaweed, but could not get out. According to her recollections, one of local residents tore off her gold necklace and disappeared, ignoring requests for help ( the bodies of the victims were also robbed). After a while, the girl was found by her cries for help and was pulled out of the swamp by a local farmer.

On August 27, 2006 in Kentucky, USA, a passenger plane crashed during takeoff. The crash was caused by the captain's mistaken choice runway, the length of which was too short for this type of aircraft, in the end only the co-pilot, James Polehink, survived, who, as a result of numerous injuries ( severe concussion, many fractures, rib-pierced lung) lost his memory and did not remember anything about the plane crash.

4-year-old Cecilia Xichan managed to survive a plane crash in 1989

On August 16, 1989, a regular flight, McDonnell Douglas DC-9-82 of Northwest Airlines, took off from Detroit airport. There were 157 people on board, including a 4-year-old girl Cecilia Sichan. Her parents and her six-year-old brother flew with her.

The liner began to swing already on takeoff, it touched the lighting mast with its left wing, part of the wing came off and caught fire. Then the plane tilted to the right, and another wing punctured the roof of the car rental office. The plane crashed onto the highway, falling apart, and burst into flames. The debris and bodies of the victims were scattered over an area of over half a mile.

Firefighter John Tied, who worked at the crash site, heard a small squeak and saw a children's pen among the wreckage. A 4-year-old girl with a skull fracture, a broken leg and collarbone, and third-degree burns was the only survivor of the disaster. She underwent four skin grafts but managed to fully recover.

Cecilia was raised by her aunt and uncle. When the girl grew up, she got a tattoo on her wrist in the form of an airplane, in memory of that day.

Bahia Bakari

On June 30, 2009, off the coast of the Comoros, a Yemeni airline crashed into the ocean. Of the 153 passengers, only thirteen-year-old Baia Bakari, a Frenchwoman, who flew to the Comoros from Marseille with her mother, survived. When the girl was thrown from the plane in a collision with water, she received multiple bruises and broke her collarbone. She managed to get out of the water onto one of the wreckage of the plane, on which she was for 14 hours, until she was discovered by the crew of a passing ship, who took the girl, who suffered primarily from hypothermia, to the hospital.

In January 2010, Bakari published her autobiography "The Survivor" with journalist Omar Genduz... In May of the same year, the newspaperAol newspublished information that Steven Spielberg Bakari offered to purchase the rights to film her book, but she refused.

Aviation accidents appeared along with aeronautics, but only by the 40s of the 20th century, these cases began to be recorded. The rating includes people who survived the plane crashes. 10 cases were considered when only one person survived from all passengers.

10.Julianne Diller Koepke(December 24, 1971) - the only seventeen-year-old girl who survived the plane crash . On that terrible night, she was aboard a Peruvian airline with her parents. A thunderstorm started and lightning struck the plane. The air machine began to fall apart at an altitude of 3200 meters and fell into the rainforest. The debris on which Julianne's chair had been mounted had fallen off in mid-air. He flew down through the raging elements and rotated at a breakneck speed in a circle. The fragment, together with Julianne, landed on the treetops, which saved the girl. She had a broken collarbone and numerous wounds. The survivor found the strength to get up and go to seek help. Stumbling across a stream in the jungle, she went downstream. On the tenth day, Julianne went out to the settlement. The story of the heroic girl formed the basis of several feature films.

9.Vesna Vulovic(January 26, 1972) - 22-year-old flight attendant who survived a plane crash and got into the Guinness Book for falling from a height of 10 kilometers without a parachute. At the moment when the airliner flew over Czechoslovakia at an altitude of 10,160 meters, an explosion occurred on the ship. The Yugoslavian stewardess, by the will of fate, was on board that day - she replaced her colleague. The tree branches the girl fell on softened the blow. Vulovich did not come to her senses for almost a month and lay in a hospital bed for a year and a half. Despite this, the forced record holder was able to return to normal life and continued to work in aviation, but only in ground service.

8.Larisa Savitskaya - plane crash survivor twenty-year-old girl (24 August 1981). Together with her husband, a young woman was returning home from honeymoon trip... Above the city of Zavitinsk, at an altitude of 5220 meters, a bomber crashed into their AN-24 plane. All people in two planes were killed (37 people). The girl was in the tail section of the broken AN-24. From a five thousandth height, Larissa fell on a large debris. The fall lasted 8 minutes. A piece of the airliner, together with the victim, fell onto birch plantations, which softened the force of the impact. Larisa, who survived the plane crash, spent two nights alone in the forest. Despite a concussion, numerous abrasions and injuries, she could move independently. Graves were prepared for all passengers, including for Larisa. The search engines were taken aback to see her alive. The woman got into the Guinness Book of Records twice: as a person who was the only survivor of a plane crash and as a passenger who received the minimum compensation - 75 rubles.

7.George Lamson ( January 21, 1985) - the only survivor of a plane crash in the United States, Nevada. A seventeen-year-old guy was returning with his father on a Lockheed L-188 Electra plane with ski resort... Suddenly, the aircraft was heavily heeled on one side and began to fall. George pressed his knees to his chest as the plane hit the ground. Together with the seat, it was carried out of the fuselage an instant before the explosion. It was this factor that saved the life of the young man. The cause of the tragedy, in which 70 people died, was a piloting error in assessing the situation, as a result of which Lockheed L-188 Electra lost speed and fell.

6.Cecilia Xichan(August 16, 1989) is a four-year-old girl who survived a plane crash in Detroit that killed 154 people. The plane never managed to gain altitude. Even on takeoff, he hooked his wing on the lighting tower, which caused it to fall off and catch fire. The liner veered to the right, and with the second wing, he broke through the roof of the building. The aircraft simply fell to pieces, which were scattered over almost a kilometer area. Sessily was found under the rubble by a fireman. After numerous fractures and burns, the girl was able to recover. Cecilia's parents fell victim to the same tragedy. Now the girl is not afraid to fly, believing that "the projectile does not hit the same place twice."

5. Nine year old Erica Delgado ( January 11, 1995) was on the list of people who were the only survivors of plane crashes thanks to her mother. She and her family were on a flight from Bogota to Cartagena, Colombia. The cause of the terrible disaster was a malfunction of the ship's instruments, which crashed to the ground during the landing approach. At the moment of the fall, the mother pushed the child out of the crumbling liner, and the girl fell into a lake overgrown with algae. A local farmer saved her after hearing cries for help. Erica escaped with a broken arm, the rest of the passengers and crew members (52 people) were killed.

4.Yousef Gillali(March 6, 2003) - the only survivor of the plane crash that occurred in the city of Tamanrasset (Algeria). The Boeing 737-200 aircraft crashed during takeoff due to engine failure. While in mid-air due to the engine fire, the ship began to rapidly lose speed. The Boeing crashed in rocky terrain near the airfield and was blown apart. Of the 104 crew members, only twenty-eight-year-old soldier Gillali managed to escape. The victim received many fractures and was in a coma. But a day later, the young man came to his senses, and his life was out of danger.

3. On Sunday morning (August 27, 2006), a fire broke out on board an aircraft on a Lexington-Atlanta flight in Kentucky. The car crashed a kilometer from the airport. All passengers and crew members (49 people) were killed. The fire was so intense that it was impossible to identify the bodies. Only the second forty-four-year-old pilot James Polekhinke managed to escape. Firefighters pulled him out of the cockpit burning. The cause of the disaster was the use of the shorter runway by the pilots. As a result of this, the air machine, having rammed the iron fence and crashed into a tree, collapsed and caught fire.

2. Thirteen year old Bahia Bakari- the only surviving passenger on a flight from Paris to Comoros (June 30, 2009). A few minutes before landing, the aircraft began to fall rapidly and crashed into the water. Indian Ocean... The girl cannot describe the circumstances of the incident, since she was asleep. Presumably she was thrown through the window. Bahia waited 14 hours for help from rescuers, drifting in the open ocean on the wreck of the ship that did not sink. So she was the only survivor of 153 people.

1. Flight engineer Alexander Sizov - survivor of the plane crash that happened on September 7, 2011 near Yaroslavl. On that fateful day, the Yak-42 aircraft was supposed to deliver the Lokomotiv hockey players to the match in the city of Minsk. Having passed the entire runway, the plane began to rise from the ground, falling sharply onto the left wing. After that, the car collapsed, scattering into parts, which were thrown several hundred meters in the vicinity. Alexander came to himself only when he found himself in a river burning with kerosene. Despite numerous fractures and subsequent surgeries, the fifty-two-year-old passenger survived. The cause of the tragedy that happened on board the Yak-42 was a crew error during the takeoff of the aircraft.
