Sigmund Freud allegedly once said: "The only thing that interests me in America is Koni-Island."

Hard, but take a look at the evidence: there are multi-kilometer sandy beaches, the embankment for walks, attractions in abundance, a parade of mermaids topless and a television competition, which is entirely devoted to eating hot dogs. You agree with Mr. Freud or not, it is impossible to challenge the fact that Koni-Island, who, by the way, is actually a peninsula, not the island, seriously competes with other districts.

Event Cartel found little-known facts about this "America's playground."

Wonder wheel has become a wedding gift
In 1948, Greek immigrant Denos Vurderis presented his future wife Lule, that every woman dreams to get on the wedding day: a ferris wheel of 150 feet in the center of Koni-Island. Well, as I gave ... Rather, he promised that if she married him, he would buy him as soon as he could. Starting as a hot dog trader, Vurderis kept his word and eventually bought an attraction, which, first opened in 1920, earned again decades in 1983. The tradition is still alive, and the attraction that his son Steve is now becomes popular as a place where the proposal of the hand and heart can be made.

On the streets once demonstrated premature children for money
Although the embankment of Koni Island is quenched by stores and foodtractors, in the early 1900s everything was somewhat different. If you walked around the Lunapark still in those days, you most likely stumbled on glass incubators with tiny, premature children. The idea belonged to Dr. Martin Coone, who organized a small demonstration on which parents brought premature children to help them survive. Although he did not ask for money for the help, but he applied to patrons for a 25 cents card for viewing. Of course, this is a completely strange approach, but from 8,000 premature children who have passed Cunes, approximately 6500 survived.

Giant hotel in the form of an elephant, turned into a brothel, once called Koni Island House
For a long time at the corner of Surf Ave and West 12th st, there was a seven-story elephant house, which hid a lot of secrets. Inside the elephant, which was erected in 1885, there was a concert hall, a museum, tobacco shop, screw staircases (legs) leading to rooms, and telescopes (eyes). His creator, James Lafferti, even called him an "eighth miracle of the world." But as they say, nothing is forever, and what started as a hotel on the 31st room, ultimately turned into a brothel with prostitutes. Everything burned in September 1896, but there is no doubt that he lived legendary life, while still existed.

If Kony Island did not exist, it would not be a frozen custard
It was in the summer of 1919, the sellers of ice cream were panicked due to how quickly it melts. While the two native brothers, Archie and Elton Khorov, did not attend a brilliant thought. They mixed egg yolks in ice cream, which not only stopped to melt, but also accidentally turned into the world's first silk-smooth frozen custard. Rumor, the brothers sold more than 18,000 servings only for the first weekend.

The world's first American slides appeared in Koni Island
No, we are not talking about the famous cyclone. Until the wooden attraction that appeared in 1927, which we know and love, was a 600 feet railway. Opened in June 1884 Guy named Lamarcom Thompson, an attraction that stood where the cyclone was now, drove at a speed of 6 miles per hour at a distance of 50 feet above the ground. To compare the height of the cyclone - 85 feet, and the highest slide in North America is approximately 456 feet. Oh, and it cost only 5 cents per trip (today cyclone costs $ 10).

Koni-Island is also responsible for many other new products.
You can also thank this creative area for the first bike paths in the country. Developed by Frederick Low Olmstted and Calvert Vast and built in 1894 for connecting Kon Island and Prospect Park, a route that stretches for five miles along Ocean Parkway, still popular among riders (although it does not reach Prospect Park). Previously, cyclists could only go at a speed of 12 miles per hour along this bike path to avoid the race - now any speed is allowed.

Carey Grand Part of his "Starry" obliged Koni-Island
Before the silent Hollywood actor won the hearts of the spectators on the movie screen in films like "north through the north-west" and "His Girl Friday", he collected the crowd as an entertainer in Koni Island, balancing on 6-foot stilts. Grant was hired by the founder of Steeplechase Park George Tilu in the early 1920s, and his costume consisted of a bright green coat, jockey hats and black trousers.

Beaches were not always available to the public
Believe or not, Koni Island was quite closed in the first days. Now, three miles of sandy beaches of the district can be placed for free crowds of people from all sectors of society, it was not always like that. People had to pay 10 cents for the locker room to access the exclusive beach, or go to sunbathe into another place. So it was until 1923, when public embankments were built in the city and opened the platforms for everyone.

To the Parade of Mermaids in Koni Island was Mardi Gras Parade
The parade of the mermaids was not the first play moving to the streets. For fifty years, from 1903 to 1954, a weekly festival was held in Kon Island, which became known as Mardi Gras Parade in Koni Island, with floats, music and thousands of applating spectators. Unlike its counterpart "Fish-tail-and-paint-for-body", which coincides with the summer solstice, this parade was held on the day of Labor. From this gouland there was a lot of good - in fact, the whole party was organized to collect money to restore and save the shelter for fallen women, which was destroyed as a result of a fire.

Creepy yellow submarine in the townCreek in Koni-Island has nothing to do with the songBeatles, but ...
... and she has a rather curious story: years after S. S. Andrea Doria, the ocean liner, sank off the shores of Nantucket in 1956, a thought was born in the head of the Welder of shipyard Jerry Bianco. He decided to build a submarine to extract the valuable remnants of the ship. Although the ship turned over the first of his journey, it was later damaged and washed away the beard, the idea of \u200b\u200bBianco was viable.

The first hot dog Nathan cost 5 cents
Hot dogs can now cost 4 dollars apiece, but Nathan Handverber sold them for 5 cents in 1916. As the story says, he did it so to compete with his former employer, Charles Feltman (who, in the opinion of some, invented a hot dog), who sold them 10 cents. Not everything has changed, although ... the secret recipe is the same as the original version 100 years ago, and so far it can be bought at the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues.

Born in 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. The study of sociology turned out to be a boring occupation for a person with his temperament, therefore, throwing the university, Guilden in 1967 decided to buy a camera and become a photographer. He visited several classes at the School of Fine Arts in New York, but, essentially, Bruce Guilde is a self-taught photographer. Since 1998, it consists in the photograph of Magnum Photos.

Crowds on the beach. Koni-Island, 1977.

In his first film shooting on Koni-Island, he traveled to the hitchhiking, because his car was stolen. It was 1969, he lived in Queens and only a year has passed since Guilden acquired the first camera.

Do not notice the photographer on the beach was impossible. He wore construction boots, long pants and army jacket with long sleeves. Drawing around the beach in this form, he filmed a variety of characters, looking for eccentric vacationers on the beach and the embankment.

When Guilden documented Koni Island, the area has long been nostalgic in its best times. Its flourishing came in the 1890s. Then this place attracted residents of New York by summer temptations, a long beach, a ferris wheel and American slides. From the late 1960s until the end of the 1980s, when Koni-Island was in the Gilden lens, the place was considered much more overwhelmed. In part, it came into decline due to competition with other Long Island beaches, as well as as a result of a series of fires and the fact that people with money could already fly into more exotic places.

Through the probing lens of Guilden Koni-Island is replete with original characters.

Guilden recognizes that it turned out to be photographed on Koni Island than on the streets of New York. The background was cleaner, and people are still. It did not guarantee that the pictures will turn out the best. But it was easier to make a good frame, because people sat or lying, not moving.

Newlyercans were looking forward to the weekend to organize to leave the stuffy apartments and get to the beach, filling the entire space so that there was no free space. The air here was cleaner. Bathing was worth nothing. And you could get on the subway. That is why among holidaymakers were mostly poor people for whom to spend the day on the beach - a great version of the summer holiday.

Close-up. Koni-Island, 1977.

One of the distinguishing features of Bruce Guilden is that he removes from close range, climbing to people almost closely. Captured on the streets, but not often, he always skidfully twisted. At the same time, the photographer himself considers himself rich and hard.

« I think it helps me very much. To take photos that I do, you need to be rigid. And I am. It does not mean that I am the coolest guy on the street, but I'm hard and know how to react. As a result, you always have more problems with weak people than strong ... People have some strange respect for me: I am very honest, I do not play the game where I am trying to take a secret from a distance of 12 meters. Sometimes I am so close to people that they do not even understand that I photograph them. I also try to photograph where, I think a person would not mind».

Modern Koni-Island has changed, like the whole New York. Guilden finds these changes to the worst. There are many mods, but the flavor disappeared. " I'm not sad from this, but I would like to be more people whom I would be interested to photograph"," Says Gilden.

No matter how many years we have, we still have children in your soul, and this is especially visible when completely adult people come to full delight in such amusement parks like Coney Island Luna Park in New York. The "rabbit" island annually takes millions of Americans and tourists from around the world.

Kon Island: Earth without Shadow

This is the former island, and now the peninsula, is located in the most southern part of Brooklyn and the people are novel rabbit. Its width is about 800 m, and the length is 6.4 km. Located on the ocean area acquired worldwide fame due to numerous beaches and parks with attractions. However, everything was not always so cloudless. The peak of its popularity of Kon Island survived in the 20s of the last century, and then was in oblivion for a long time.

The name "Earth without shadow" is then another island given the local tribes of the Indians who marked that it is always lit by the Sun, and people do not discard the shadows. According to beliefs, a man born in these places will live a long and happy life.

The popular vacation spot for New York residents of the peninsula has become since the 1830s, and the first carousel was installed in 1876 until the Second World War it was the largest entertainment zone.

Amusement parks

In the best times, the whole Brooklyn (New York), and not only, gladly spent time in three amusement parks: "Luna", "Sling" and "Drimland", not counting other interesting places. Now only one of them is functioning.

"STIPLICS" worked for 67 years (from 1987 to 1964). He pleased his visitors races on mechanical horses or offered to resist the rotating person. In 1941, an attraction of 80 meters high was installed in the park, he was called a "parachute jump." To this day, he is a landmark for all Kon Island and visible from afar, and the local call him "Eiffel Tower in Brooklyn" (in the photo below it is depicted during night illumination).

Initially, the tower was used as a simulator for parachutists, and subsequently decided to make entertainment, and not for the faint of heart. In difficult for such a place of entertainment, like Koni-Island (New York), the park was closed, the dismantling of the structure weighing 150 tons was rated in the round sum and decided to leave. Today, Parachute Jump does not function, and only performs decorative function.

"The kingdom of the dream" (Dreamland) existed even less, from 1903 to 1911, the reason was a strong fire. His design was amazing and interesting, Venice's channels were reproduced, tower, but still the most famous Park brought a show of freaks.

But the Moon Park remained the most magical and fantastic place on Koni-Island. It was opened in 1903, huge at the time of the MINARET tower and unusual architecture caused delight and admiration. Thousands of multicolored light bulbs were lit here with the onset of twilight and this in those times when the electricity was in a novelty. The park was closed in 1944.

The most recent considered "Astrerend" (1962-2008) is the main place of entertainment that Brooklyn (New York) had in the second half of the 20th century.

Moon Park today

Now on the site of the former Astrerenda, "Drimland" and Luna Park are updated and open. On the distant past of this place reminds only two attractions - cyclone and Wheel of Miracles. Once the biggest slides in America now do not surprise anyone with their scale, but they are impressive with a special mood and the spirit of the antiquity. Young people call them a "pleasant train" for an adult generation. However, their uniqueness is not speed and steep turns, and in the design itself, guides and booths are made of natural wood (photo below).

The fortyxestimetry wheel continues to work since 1920 and is a real symbol of Koni Island (USA, New York). In 2011, for the first time in the last 80 years, new attractions were opened to attract interest and tourists. The updated zone was named Scream Zone. In essence, it is independent, although included in the new Moon Park. Now a lover of acute sensations and extremes can be happy to experience their nerves on the most modern rides. There is everything here: from cute swings and carousels for the smallest, family entertainment, games to candy soul fear of installations. Well, of course, numerous restaurants and cafes, including the one in which the World Championships are held annually on eating hot dogs.

Prices for tickets

In the distant times, the Amusement Park on Koni Island was considered almost the most budget holiday destination citizens. Much has changed since then. Tickets for entertainment will cost week's days cheaper than on weekends. You can try all the attractions in two ways: to buy separate tolls of 1 dollar each, or to purchase a special bracelet, which gives you the opportunity to ride without restrictions for 4 hours. Its price - 26 dollars in 30 - on weekends. The cost of a separate attraction ranges from 1 to 7 twin.

New York Aquarium

Attractions are not the only sight of Koni Island visitors. So, walking along the embankment, you can slowly get to the New York aquarium, which was moving here from Battery Park. From the Atlantic Ocean it separates his sandy beach and a wooden promenade along the coastline. The aquarium includes several pavilions and a pool, which conducts circus views with dolphins.

Koni-Island is a small colorful peninsula in the southern part of Brooklyn, with a population of more than 60,000 people. Peninsula attracts its huge beach. Since the beginning of the 20s, the atmosphere of fun and joy reigns here. Koni-Island is known for a large beach, boulevards and attractions.

Koni Island and Brooklyn Tour

Coni-Island is a great place to avoid strong heat during the summer. Beaches, boulevards and American slides are three main elements that characterize this funny place. Here you can even swim. If you want to explore Brooklyn and Koni Island, enjoying stops in several excellent pizzerias, I recommend to take. It is also the perfect option for visiting Koni Island Beach: You will get there without a hassle that cannot be avoided on the subway (takes about an hour!).

Entertainment Park Luna Park

In the past, most poor residents lived on Koni-Island. To date, the peninsula has gained popularity among creative youth and hipsters. During the reconstruction period, a few years ago, many institutions closed, but some attractions left in the same place. Be sure to go to Wonder Wonder Wheel Ferris and 87-year-old American hill. The famous snack bar "Nathan's" with delicious hot dogs is close to attractions. The amusement park on Koni-Island was completely renovated, but retained its original name Luna Park. Anyone can stroll through the moon park for free, but you need tickets to get on the attractions.

Amphitheater on Koni Island

Koni-Island Amphitheater on the Embankment is specially designed to hold different concerts and other events. The building is partially under a canopy. Especially nice to visit there in the summer, although events take place all year round. Calendar concerts of amphitheater Koni-Island can be viewed.

Mermaid Parade on Coni Island

For the first time spent in 1983, the Mermaid Parade Parade became a popular holiday celebrating the beginning of the summer season. What should be expected? Hundreds of mermaids, Neptun and other marine inhabitants! The parade is considered a family event, but keep in mind that there are candid outfits here. The parade of mermaids on Koni-Island is held every year at the beginning of summer.

Brighton Beach

The legendary Brighton Beach is part of Kon Island. Visiting this unique part of the city, you will most likely hear more people speaking in Eastern European language than in English. Most of the population of this area amounted to immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Brighton Beach is often referred to as Little Russia (Little Russia) or Little Odessa. It reigns a special atmosphere, it is difficult to understand in what bed you are. Many residents of New York prefer to spend here hot summer days next to a wonderful beach. When visiting bars and restaurants, you will notice the influence of Eastern European culture. Completely normal to start the day in order to order a pended gill with honey and enjoy caviar at a reasonable price.
