For several decades, the Mueang Boran park, which recently changed its official name to Ancient Siam, remains the world's largest open-air park-museum. The territory of the park is 320 hectares, and the shape of the park itself resembles the outlines of the entire Kingdom of Thailand in its modern borders. It is the objects located in the park that are its main asset. Looking at the map of the park, you might think that this is just another of many miniature parks, like the Mini Siam park in Pattaya, where ancient temple complexes and buildings are just many times smaller copies of the real ones. I warn you right away that this is far from the case, because the structures and temples erected in the park of Ancient Siam are made either in full size, or only slightly inferior to their originals in size. What's more, unlike traditional miniature parks, most of the properties at Mueang Boran have meticulously reproduced interiors. temples and buildings can be viewed not only from the outside, but also from the inside.

Another advantage of the park is the opportunity to better explore the history and culture of ancient Siam. All objects in the park are placed in such a way that their location corresponds to the real geographic location of a real temple in one or another part of the country or to the dream where the temple was located many centuries ago. Unfortunately, many buildings and ancient temples have not survived to this day, and only in the Ancient Siam park today you can admire their beauty and grandeur, because restoration work is carried out with the involvement of many experienced historians and archaeologists.

Moreover, for the construction of some of the objects, fragments of the originals are used, which were mined during archaeological excavations in Thailand. Thus, all objects of the park can be divided into three types. Firstly, these are those that were built from the original fragments transported to Mueang Boran Park and which no longer exist where they once were. These are the sights that can only be seen in this park (under the green numbers on the map).

Secondly, these are slightly reduced copies of objects, the originals of which can be found in various regions of Thailand (marked in red on the map). Finally, thirdly, these are, so to speak, "mythical structures", ie. flight of imagination of modern architects on how buildings and other buildings preserved only in legends would look like. The same category, marked in blue on the map, includes buildings that did not exist in reality, but were built using the architectural styles of a particular period of Ancient Siam.

As a result, after spending most of the day (and it is better not to count on less, because the park is huge, and the time in it runs imperceptibly) to explore Ancient Siam, you will take a kind of excursion throughout Thailand, you will see most of the most significant temple complexes of the country and individual majestic temples from different time periods of Ancient Siam, and you will also be able to inspect many of them not only from the outside, but also from the inside (if there is enough time for this). And all this - at the price of an entrance ticket, which is more than democratic.

Ancient Siam Park: location + how to get there

As I wrote above, Mueang Boran Park is not located in Bangkok itself, but in its special Bang Na district, in Samut Prakan province. Perhaps it is this circumstance that explains the fact that on weekdays the number of foreign tourists in the park can be counted on one hand, and there are usually few local visitors. As a rule, these are Thai students who visit the park in groups as part of history lessons. But you should not be afraid of them either, since the park is huge and there is enough space for everyone. For example, during the whole day I met only one such group near the entrance to the park.

Do not be afraid that the park is not in the capital itself: getting to it is no more difficult (and not more expensive) than in many urban areas, because it is only 33 km from Bangkok. The easiest way to do this is by taxi, which will cost you around 250 baht per car from the city center. When planning to visit the Ancient City Park (Ancient Siam), it is better to choose the area as a place of residence in Bangkok Suhkumvit Road, because it is not far from this longest road in the country, practically on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, that Ancient Siam Park is located.

Since I originally planned to visit the Ancient Siam Park, I stopped at, which is located literally next to the On Nut metro station of the BTS Skytrain. As a result, the taxi to the park cost me only 178 baht on the meter, and the trip took just over half an hour. Considering that I was with a friend, the fare for each was about 90 baht, i.e. less than $ 3 per person. Taxi drivers usually know this place, but you can print and show them the map below (the park is marked with a Thai inscription in the lower right corner).

An even more affordable way to get to Mueang Boran is to use public transport. The required bus number 511 Pinklao - Paknam is equipped with air conditioning and stops under the same station - On Nut and goes towards the park. Landing should be done on the opposite side of the road from McDonalds and Tesco Lotus. I draw your attention to the fact that there are several bus stops in this place at once, so look for the one where the number of the desired bus is indicated on the plate. Immediately warn the conductor that you need to get to Muang Boran Park (this name is more understandable to Thais), but taking into account the fact that you need to go to the final one, you can do without it.

The rest of the way will need to be done on tuk-tuk (open pickup songthaew) # 36, which will take you directly to the park entrance. The total trip for one person will cost about $ 1, i.e. translated into, 20 baht + 10 baht. Despite the fact that the option with a bus is more budgetary, I still recommend a taxi, because it is also very inexpensive, especially if you have several people, and the option with a bus will take at least twice as much time on the road, which is better spent in the park.

The way back is done in the same way. There is a taxi rank near the park entrance, and if you don’t stay too long in the park after it closes (which is not uncommon), then it’s quite possible to find a taxi in Bangkok that will take you over the counter. For example, for me the return trip cost 195 baht. But this is due to the fact that I had to do the extra way along Sukhkumvit Road to turn to the right side of the road to the hotel, although it was possible to get out earlier and just cross the road somewhere at around 185 baht :). For reference: my friends drove from Ancient Siam Park without a meter to the center of Bangkok for 300 baht.

Below is information that is useful to study before visiting the park, which will allow you to more efficiently plan your time and see more than when you go to the park without preparation.

★ On the Internet, you can find information that the entrance ticket to the Mueang Boran Park is 500 baht, but this is somewhat outdated data. Currently, the entrance for foreigners is 700 baht for adults, and for children, locals and those who have officially resided in Thailand for a long time, the entrance ticket will cost 300 baht. Together with the ticket, a card is issued in the selected language (Thai or English, there may be others).

★ For an additional fee, you can rent electric cars of various capacities and prices. For example, a 6-seater golf cart will cost 450 baht per hour, and the smallest electric car for two people will cost three times less. Groups of people can even hire a small open type bus. The roads in the park are wide, so you can initially go around the park on electric cars, and only then visit the objects you like most by riding bicycles.

★ After spending a few hours in the park, you will definitely want to quench your thirst and have a snack. The map shows the places where you can buy a cool cocktail and an inexpensive snack. The largest selection of such establishments is presented in the "Floating Market" area, located in the central part of the park. The prices are very affordable. For example, for two of us hot dishes with rice, eggs, chicken, vegetables + salad + 2 bottles of water in total cost about $ 6, i.e. about 90 baht per person. Of course, we are talking about, perhaps European dishes are more expensive.

★ Although many of the temples are reconstructions of the originals, a dress code must be observed when visiting the park. Those. it is better to give up short skirts, shorts and T-shirts with open shoulders and a deep neckline. By the way, more closed, but light clothing will help you protect yourself from the hot sun. Also, do not forget about hats and sun protection creams, because even when you are far from the beaches you need to remember.

★ The hottest time of the day can be spent in one of the many gazebos, indulging in meditation, hiding in the shade from the sun and enjoying peace and quiet. The park is really full of places where you can retire for a long time and not see either the workers or other tourists.

★ There are cages with birds, rabbits in the park, in some places you can see large monitor lizards, turtles, grazing buffaloes, deer, etc. running across the road. Reindeer can be stroked, but you need to be careful with monitor lizards.

★ For the convenience of visiting (and in order not to get lost) road signs are installed at some forks to help you find your way. Although it is better to use the map for this, because almost all structures are unique in their own way and it is difficult to confuse them with others. In addition, there are specially installed billboards with a map of the park and an indication of your current location in it.

★ It is better to take the whole day to visit the park, i.e. arrive at the park in the morning after 09:00 in the morning and leave before dark, around 17:00 in the evening. In this case, you will have time to inspect most of the park and see some of the objects not only from the outside, but also from the inside. On the Internet, you can find information that the park is open from 9 am to 5 pm. But for some reason, the official map indicates that the park is open daily from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. However, remember that it gets dark early in Thailand, usually after 18:00.

★ This article contains photos of only a small part of what can be seen in Mueang Boran Park. Firstly, there are a lot of objects and I did not photograph all of them (there simply would not be enough time for this). Secondly, it was only when writing this article that I noticed that the best photos are those in which I myself or a friend, so I do not publish them here. On the other hand, this guarantees that when you visit the park, it will be much more interesting for you to discover more and more new objects that have not even been seen in photographs.

★ On your way to the park, you will most likely pass by the original building of the famous Erawan Museum in Thailand, but there will probably not be enough time to visit it on the same day.

★ Ancient Siam Park is not only temples and palaces, but also just a very beautiful park with magnificent trees, beautifully trimmed shrubs, flower beds and original sculptures. Pay attention to the signs prohibiting visiting certain places by bike (you must leave this transport at the entrance to the territory).

★ Be prepared that you won't be able to see and consider everything in one day. Therefore, plan initially: either to inspect most of the buildings only from the outside and very superficially, or to walk in the park more leisurely, carefully studying the objects and going inside most of them, initially planning to return to the park at least one more time.

It is better to come to the Ancient City in the morning, while it is not so hot. There are not many tourists here, you can always take a walk in the park in a relaxed atmosphere. Around noon, enjoy lunch or coffee at the floating market. The prices are not high. Shops, drinks stalls and toilets are scattered throughout the park with islets. At the entrance, take a map so as not to get lost.

You can safely spend a good part of the day in Mueang Boran Park. You will not be able to run around him at a gallop. Set up for at least 3 hours of sightseeing tours by taxi or electric car. If you choose a bike ride, with a lunch break, exploring all the interesting corners of the park will take from 5 hours. How to get to Mueang Boran?

By public transport, the Ancient City can only be reached with a transfer, and this is far from the best way due to traffic jams and constant stops. The easiest way is to take a taxi or take the free shuttle bus from Bearing Station. Check out the Erawan Museum along the way, then head to Mueang Boran.
