Chichen-Itsa - Are the most famous Pyramids of Mexico? The ancient city of Chichen-Itsa, Mexico: description, photo, where is on the map, how to get there of Jaguarov Temple in Chichen Ice.

  • 10.04.2021

Approximately 120 kilometers southeast of the city of Merida are the ruins of the ancient city of Chichen-Itsa. This is the most famous archaeological attraction of the Mayan period and Yucatan State

We continue a series of stories about the pyramids of the world from Lifeglobe. Last time, we told about the underwater pyramids of Jonaguni Island, now came through the story about the great city of Maya Indians, their culture and facilities.

Contrary to widespread opinion, Maya was not an empire - it was a group of autonomous cities, often interacting with other states in the region. Chichen-Itsa and many other important Mayan cities were built in accordance with the sacred beliefs of the Indians - the city were built, reflecting the situation of various astronomical objects of the night sky

So, who still built this ancient city and his pyramids? Maya were an ancient civilization of southern Mexico and other South American countries - Guatemala, Honduras, Belize and Salvador. Nowadays, about 6 million descendants of Maya speakers who speakers in many different adverbs live here.

The people of Maya very well versed in astronomy, during the first millennium of our era, they studied in detail and caused a scheme of the movement of the sun, the moon, as well as other planets and stars. On this, their religion and mythology, explaining the past, present and future. Maya also invented a brilliant mathematical system, a written system, and a combination of three accurate interrelated calendars

In addition to the city of Chichen Itza, Maya is also a number of other cities in churches, such as Palenk, Ushmal, Copan, and others. Many of these cities are restored by archaeologists, while the part remains underground and is waiting for their turn. It is also worth noting that Maya could move over long distances in the ocean, developing a complex method of navigation on the stars

We turn specifically to the history of the city of Chichen-Itsa. The Proto Maya tribes inhabited a flat plateau of Yucatan Peninsula for 8000 years. Archaeologists believe that this place for thousands of years was the most important place of pilgrimage

The capital and social center of Maya Chichen-Itza became the eighth century. At first, the coastal territories of Yucatan were found, then settlements were spread to the entire peninsula. Thanks to two large sources of pure water, not drying throughout the year, Chichen Itza became the most powerful city of Maya

In the 10th century, the city was captured by Toltec, making the capital of the Toltec State in Chichen-ICU, but later he was disgusted with the joint argent of the three Maya cities. After the 12th century, Yucatan at mysterious reasons was empty, since the Spanish conquerors destroyed the Mayan manuscripts and clergy. By the time of Spanish conquests in the 16th century, Chichen Iza was solid ruins

As a result of the excavation in the territory of the city, many architectural monuments were found, in particular, the famous pyramids Chichen-Itsi. The temple of the Kukulkana is most distinguished among them - a pyramid of 9 stages of 24 meters high. It is surprising that in the days of autumn and spring equinels, the rays of the sun illuminate the pyramid staircase in such a way that they form an image of seven-free triangles, which, in turn, the body of a 37-meter snake crawling as the sun moves to its head, is turned out to be turned into a stone at the base Stairs

On a small pyramid of 4 steps there is a temple of the soldiers of Chichen Iza, the Temple of Jaguars and the Maya Observatory called Karakol is adjacent. Surprisingly, the Maya Indians played football. Naturally, not in the form in which it is customary to play this game is now, but nevertheless, during the excavations, 7 large balls for playing the ball were discovered. The length of the largest field was 135 meters

It was also possible to maintain the statues of the gods, with a very interesting detailing and style of execution, a lot of handicraft objects and various utensils. The sacred well is preserved at 50 meters deep, which is probably used for sacrifice

Nowadays, the Government of Mexico bought a plot of land in 83 hectares, on which the city of Chichen Itza is located in order to save it. This is one of the main attractions of Mexico recognized by UNESCO of the object of world heritage. In 2007, the city recognized as one and new seven wonders of the world.

Related cities in Mexico were also at Aztecs, for example, the city of Teotihuacan, which looks no less majestically.

Chichen Itsa (Chichen Itza) - Ancient Maya City

Chichen Itsa (Span. Chichen Itza.) - the ancient city of Maya on the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). The name translated from the Language of Maya means "near the entrance to the well of ICA" or the "mouth of the waters of waters". In the literal translation of "Chi" from Maya, it is translated as "mouth", "Chen" is the "well", "ICA" - the name of the Mayan tribe, according to the legend they were the first to appear on our land. According to archaeologists and anthropologists, this city is built on the so-called "place of power".

This ancient Maya city is based on the ICA tribe approximately in the VII century. During the reign of King Kakupakal, in the second half of the 9th century, the city turned into an advanced power in the region. During this period, a number of majestic structures in the style of "PUK" were built, such as the palace and the observatory, which Spanish conquerors later called Karakol (snail).

In the X century, the ICA tribe suffered defeats in the war with their neighbors and left the city for a while. After some time, Iza in the Union with Toltekami, under the leadership of the priest of Ketzalcoatlia (Cukulkan) was walked. In 1047, Bachelor Vinika Tweaky turned Chichen Izu in the capital of his new Toltec-May Power. During this period, new buildings appeared in the city, such as:

1. A stepped pyramid of Cukulkana is 24 meters high;
2. Temple of warriors on the 4-speed pyramids;
3. Temple of Jaguar;
4. Group of thousands of columns;
5. Sacred Senot - Well, a depth of 50 meters for sacrifices;
6. A large 135 metering ball for playing the ball and other buildings.

In 1194, in the battle, Chichenary, Chichen's troops were defeated by the Ushmaltsi, the Supreme Priest Cukulkana Hapaykan came to capture and was executed. After 222 days, the capital was captured and slept by the Mayannaments who were commanded by the Hunakkel. The ruler of Chichen-Iza Chakshkchak escaped in Perepen-Izu.
After 1244, Chichen-Itsa fully lost its independence and the city of Majapan ruled. At the end of the 15th century, the city finally empty, leaving after himself a number of large architectural monuments of the Mayan era and Toltec. Also preserved statues of gods with characteristic Maya plastic forms, reliefs depicting geometric and plant ornaments, other works of art and crafts.

Chichen-Itsa is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, an ancient city is the second most popular tourist object of Mexico. Collecting in Mexico, be sure to turn on the ICU in your route. In 2007, the Maya city was included in the list of new wonders of the world.

Continuing the topic of the pyramids affected in the previous publication about Teotihuakan - the largest ancient city On the territory of America, it is impossible to go around the attention of an equally famous complex Chich e.n-иц. but(Emphasis on the letter highlighted by bold), located in Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula.

How to get to Chichen Izsy

Chichen Itza is located just 200 km and two hours away by car from the most popular Mexican resort Cancun, so it is a kind of must-see the landmark of the region, and this is true. The complex is laid a great paid highway, which allows you to quickly and comfortably go there at least by car, even by bus.

All the route marked on the map from point A (center of Cancun resort) to Chichen Iza (point B) with a check-in to Tulum (point C) and return to Cancun takes 480 km and 6 hours by car, which allows it to be easy to put it in one day.

Movement on the car in Mexico first creates an illusion of permissiveness - a great paid road, there are few cars, why not to patch the pedal to the floor?! However, be careful - road police in Mexico very corrupt and aims to extort the money, first of all, from tourists. I recommend not exceeding the speed strongly over the recommended and be sure to read. story about my experience in communicating with the Mexican policeSo that if anything is not going to money.

Basic facts about Chichen Ice

  • Chichen Itza literally means "Well tribe well": Under the well refer to the large natural beef wells, where the sacrifices were allegedly accomplished, and "ICA" is one of the species of Maya tribes.
  • the city is located in the jungle of Yucatana, away from the sea coast. Researchers believe that the choice of space was due to the presence of huge natural wells, which served as a source of drinking water.
  • it is believed that Chichen Itza was founded in 514. At the end of the 15th century, the Toletech's militant tribe captured Chichen-ICU (perhaps the seizure occurred peacefully, by agreement), and it was after the arrival of Toltecs "the most impressive buildings of the complex were built, preserved to the present day.
  • during the heyday, by the XII century AD. Chichen Itza occupied the territory of about 10 square kilometers, on which lived up to 30,000 people.
  • in 1178, Chichen Itsa it was captured United army of three Indian states. However, as in Teotihuakan, the sunset of the history of Chichen-Itsa was very fast: at the peak itself: at the end of the XII century, the city suddenly left all the inhabitants, after which he became rapidly destroyed. Spanish conquistadors caught only the ruins of the once largest city in the region.
  • Chichen Itza remained abandoned while in 1843. John Stevenson's traveler did not accidentally stumbled upon it. In the 1920s, large-scale restoration work was conducted, and soon the complex was opened for a general public.

Such is the official version of the history of Chichen-Itsi, however, as I mentioned repeatedly, to these figures and facts should be treated very skeptical, for which there are a number of grounds:

  • what we see is now in Chichen Ice, the result of the diligent work of a large number of restorers who, of course, made a very beautiful picture, but practically no chance of understanding in which Maya first saw this city for the first time. The entrance is closed inside the pyramid, and since 2006 it has become impossible to climb on it.
  • "Officially adopted" purpose of many preserved buildings causes many questions. So, in the sacrificial Senot, it was possible to find only about 100 bodies, and not young girls, but mostly children and men. The ball stadium is striking by proportions and dramatically stands out from the entire row of buildings. From the so-called observatory to observe something in the starry sky is simply impossible. In more detail about this - below, in the section Walking by Chichen Ice.
  • dating structures is based on Maya chronicle. Representatives of academic science are readily referred to this, but at the same time they forget to mention that the Maya calendar does not make it possible to accurately dating events. The Mayan calendar includes the so-called "short cycle" (52 years), within which each event is dated very accurately, and the "long cycle" (which covers a period of several million years). It is not always possible to understand what kind of 52-year cycle, it is not always possible - especially when the chronicle tells about some very remote events. So it turns out that 520 or 1040 will be recorded in the chronicles in the same way if the chronicler did not leave special bindings to the long cycle, which was done extremely rarely.

In the scientific literature, it is customary to admire the knowledge and achievements of the Mayan civilization, ranging from an extremely accurate calendar to detailed astronomical knowledge, but there is no evidence that the Maya has created this knowledge. Moreover, the Artifacts of the Mayan civilization artifacts are just forced to doubt it. So, Maya did not know the wheels - while their logic of their calendar is best illustrated by three round gears of different diameters:

Mayan calendar principle

In one of the following publications, I will tell you in detail about the oddities of the Mayan calendar, which, of course, deserve a separate parsing.

Church of Kukulkana - Dominant Chichen-Itsi

Entering the complex, you find yourself on one of several tracks leading to the pyramid.

The entrance to the complex is marked by the letter E. There is also a paid parking that you need to pay separately. We used free parking removed from the entrance by about 500-600 meters.

On the territory of all Chichen-Itsi along the tracks are trays of merchants with numerous souvenirs. Prices are reasonable, not overpriced, compared to cancun, however, the abundance of trading trays spoils and takes place atmosphere.

Soon the path leads you to an open area, in the middle of which the most famous pyramid of Chichen-Iza is elevated - the Church of the Feather of the St. Kukulcan (Castillo de Kukulcan), which is the unconditional dominant complex. As I said, it is categorically forbidden to climb on the pyramid, for what the numerous protection of the complex is watched.

Interesting facts about the temple of Cukulkan:

  • the pyramid is folded in 9 levels (steps), on its vertex there is a sanctuary.
  • the temple has four sides, for each of which the staircase leads to the top, on each of which 91 steps. In total, it gives 364 steps (4 * 91), which in sum with the platform at the top gives 365 - the number of days a year.
  • as in Teoutiouakan, the faces of the pyramids have a slight deviation from the current parties of the world, which indicates their "doping" character (that is, it is safe to argue that the pyramid - or at least an ancient building in this place - was built before As a result of the cataclysm, about 13,000 years ago, the Earth's poles occurred).
  • The edges of the stairs are made in the shape of the head of the pennate snake Cukulkan. All sites in need are written that in the days of equinox, due to the game of light, an interesting effect is created - when sunrise it seems, as if snakes crawling through the pyramid. These days in Chichen-ICU always observes an increased influx of tourists and local residents who want to see this phenomenon. By the way, you can admire it, by the way, it is possible a few days before or after the equinox (because the effect appears not uniform and does not disappear).

I personally watched several of the most popular videos, where this moment is depicted, and I can say for sure that the event is sudden from the finger. Yes, the shadow is visible, but it is almost fixed. At the same time, the people around - as on a football match, so I can't look anything really.

  • maya built the pyramids as matryoshki - so, inside this pyramid there is more ancient, the existence of which became known only at the beginning of the 20th century. Unfortunately, there are no open studies of this pyramid (supporters of alternative history believe that this is due to the inability to enter individual artifacts from this ancient pyramid to the official version of history).

  • upstairs the pyramid is located the Temple of the jaguar, inside which the wooden throne was found with the image of jaguar with jade spots:

Wooden throne in the form of a red jaguar

At the time of its detection by Europeans in the XIX century, the temple of Kukulkana was a pile of stones and looked something like this:

Huge ball stadium

In addition to the church of Cukulkan, towering over the terrain, the complex is striking by another construction, not like anything else. It is about how it is called, a giant stadium for playing the ball. From other stadiums and sports grounds, it is distinguished by truly gigantic sizes. It is almost impossible to imagine the game on the usual people of our height.

According to the common academic version, the goal of the game was to throw the ball, stuffed with grass, this is the ring (see photo from above).

The stadium was also very destroyed (see photo of the middle of the XIX century to restoration):

A lot of legends are folded around the game in the ball of the ancient Maya, which differ only in one thing: to whom they cut off the head - the winning team or losers. These scenes are depicted on multiple bas-reliefs surrounding the field.

Directly at the stadium was the Temple of Jaguar, in which, in the Indian chronicles, the sacrifice was made after the game of the ball:

Temple of jaguar in the background

Of course, it did not cost without the image of the Cukulkan - the Pernomy Snake, who was the main deity of Maya:

By the way, for me, the Kukulkan is very much reminded of the ancient Chinese dragon - but then the question immediately arises, which connection could exist between South America and China in ancient times.

Other buildings

Among other buildings, Chichen-Itsa can also be distinguished by the temple of warriors:

A wooden roof was located on a plurality of columns.

We are in the role of famous Asian monkeys: I do not see anything, I will not hear anything, I won't tell anyone anyone

Nearby is the so-called "place of thousands of columns", where trading was under the palm leaves (there was something like a market):

Group of thousands of columns in Chichen Ice

Senot Chichen-Itsy

A trip to Chichen Izu brought a new word - Senot to my lexicone. So denotes huge natural wells in which groundwater from underground rivers accumulate. Sota on Earth is quite rare, which is associated with the specifics of their formation in limestone earthly rocks.

On the peninsula Yucatan such sensots set. Two sensories are located directly on the territory of the Chichen-Itza complex, but there are several few minutes later.

The version is widespread according to which one of the Cells was used by the ancient Maya for sacrifice. He is called now - the sacred synod. Here, allegedly, dumped up young virgins to hide the gods.

Sacred Senot in Chichen Ice

However, a detailed study of the DNA of Senot, undertaken at the beginning of the 20th century by the American archaeologist Edward Thompson, has shown that it is no more than a beautiful myth for naive tourists. He managed to find only 50 bodies, of which the majority were men and children. An antiquity researcher Andrei Sklyarov put forward the version that these remains are not connected with sacrifices, but are only a consequence of accidents (for example, when children were sent by water to the well, and they fell from the cliff).

Most Senets Yucatana are not so gloomy as this, but in some of them you can even swim. Tourists usually go swimming in the Seine IK Kiel, which is located 5 kilometers from Chichen-Iza.

Swimming in Senot IK Kiel

It is convenient to get to it by car, using the navigator. You need to go towards the city of Valladolid, the lapse to the Senot itself will be marked by the pointer. The cost of swimming in Senot - 70 pesos with a person. We changed out in the machines, although you can use locker rooms in the complex. Little children give vests to rent at an additional fee - they must be taken, because there are many people in Satot, and the depth is big.

By the way, according to one of the versions, the rapid leaving of the inhabitants of Chichen-Itsi is associated with a sharp decrease in the water level in Senot, which served as the only source of drinking water.

Chichen Itza is open from 09:00 to 17:00. It is advisable to come to Chichen Iza early in the morning, before the city is flooded by tourist groups. The second option is to come in the evening, closer to the closure. And in that, in another case, more chances to make good photos and enjoy this place. Also there is an option to stay on the evening show (held every day at 19:00 in spring and winter and at 20:00 in the summer), the entrance to which is worth 98 pesos with a person.

If you come to an hour-peak, be prepared to defend 30-35 minutes for tickets to the cashier. Of course, it is impossible to purchase tickets on the Internet.

At the entrance to the Chichen-Itza complex, you will offer various additional services, and it will be done immediately after the congress with a paid road. Do not buy and do not pay anything other than official tickets. The entrance ticket to Chichen Izu is bought at the box office right at the entrance to the complex and costs 204 peso (and for adult, and for a child).

The peso rate to the ruble in October 2018 was 3.5 rubles for 1 peso.

It is necessary to lay on the inspection and walk on the complex to lay 3-4 hours, of which 2-2.5 hours will leave for the inspection of the actual central complex itself, and 1-1.5 hours - on a bathing in the nearby Senot Ik Kil (Cenote Ik Kil).

Over Chichen Ice, as in other places of archaeological monuments of Mexico, the flights of quadrocopters are strictly prohibited. The vigilant security ensures that they are not carried and deploying violators towards the storage chamber.

By the way, we still launched a quadcopter over the pyramid, just done it from the circumferential road. True, we have lost caution, flew very brazenly, lowered over the pyramid, and they were very quickly calculated. If you want to launch a quadcopter there, do it from a secluded place (not in the middle of the road), because In this case, the security will be quickly detected. We barely managed to avoid a fine, and the guard made us erase all the information from the camera.

Taking this opportunity, I give him hello and send the rays of gratitude to the authors utilities that allow you to restore erased files from flash cards:

The central pyramid of Chichen-Itsi, shot in the rays of the sunset

In general, Chichen Itza is definitely obligatory to visit by all tourists who come to Cancun. The spirit of antiquity is felt here, despite trade rows throughout the complex and lack of access to the most interesting parts of the pyramid.

In the next article, I will tell about the ancient city of TulumWhere we drove on the way back from Chichen Iza to Cancun. Subscribe to blog updates to not miss new publications.

The ancient city of Maya - Chichen-Itsa, located in Mexico in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, Oveyan ominous glory. It is here, 300 meters north of the main buildings of the city there is a sacred senley, or the "Death Well" depth of about 50 meters, at the bottom of which, according to the legend of Maya, the God of Raine Chuck lived.

Ancient city of Chichen-Itsi from a bird's eye view

To hide God and cause rain, Maya made human sacrifices, throwing the most beautiful girls on the bottom of the well. Following the victims in the Seine, rich gifts were rich - gold, jade, mountain crystal, pearl, amber, copper, onyx, etc.

The legend of the sacrifices was confirmed by Mexican scientists, immersed on the bottom of the well. And although the well is not long used by Indians Maya, many people still believe in its supernatural power. It is believed that if you throw a coin into the water and make a desire, then it will be fulfilled.

Temple Kukulkana

Brief History Chichen Izsy

The name of the ancient city of Chichen Itza is translated as "the well of the ICA tribe." The city arose in the VII century n. e. As a Religious Center of Maya, and by the X century was captured by Toltec, who came to Yucatan from Central Mexico, and by the XI century became the capital of the Toltec kingdom. In 1178, the Indian ruler Hunak Keel defeated Maya's sanctuary, turning it into a miserable pile of ruins. The city came in decline and depicted.

Temple of warriors

Return of the pennate snake

Chichen Itza is considered the most famous and better than all renovated Maya city. Chichen-Itsi's main temple is devoted to the Divine Kukulkan - "Feather Snake." The 30-meter Cukulkana Pyramid snaps on a huge stone terrace. Four stairs oriented on the sides of the world lead to the top of the ritual structure, where the ancient Maya committed sacrifices. The stairs are framed by a balustrade, which begins at the bottom of the serpent head carved in the stone and in the form of a bent snake body continues to the top of the pyramid.

Observatory

Every year in the days of the spring and autumn equinox, that is, on March 20 and September 22, you can observe the unique phenomenon of the "Feather Snake": the Sun illuminates the balustry in such a way that the shadow of the "feathered snake" is formed on the pyramid, which crawls down and disappears exactly 3 2 hours 22 minutes.

All four stairs of the temple have 91 steps, and together with a platform-platform terrace that binds them together, it turns out to be 365 steps (91 x 4 + 1), which corresponds to the number of days a year.

Temple of Jaguarov

Treasures Pyramid Kukulkana

In one of the secret premises, the Cukulkan Pyramid archaeologists found "Jaguar Mat" and the ritual figure of Chuck Moole with a flat bowl on the stomach, on which the heart of the victim brought. "Mats of Jaguar" is a throne carved from a stone in the form of a jaguar's body and painted in flame-red color. The spots on the skin of the beast are made of jade stones. Eyes are also jade, and fangs in the scaled mouth are sharpened from the stone of volcanic origin.

Seven playgrounds have been preserved in Chichen Ice, including the biggest "stadium" from ever created Maya.

Since the game in the ball had for Maya ritual importance, the losers sacrificed. Residents of Chichen-Itsi were wonderful masters and artists. This is evidenced by the uli-reliefs with vegetable and geometric ornaments carved on them, crafts, etc. in 2007, according to the results of the National Voting, Chichen Itza was recognized as one of
