Val di Fassa in Italy is a picturesque valley and ski center located in the heart of the Dolomites. It unites more than a dozen popular resorts, including Canazei - the ski capital of the region, Campitello, Alba di Canazei, etc. The resorts of Val di Fassa began to develop relatively recently. Modern ski infrastructure here is combined with affordable hotels and cozy cafes. The wide variety of slopes is complemented by cross-country ski trails, skating rinks, sports complexes and swimming pools. Val di Fassa is part of the famous Sella Ronda ski circuit. Bars and nightclubs are always fun and crowded. Every town has preserved ancient buildings and churches, and in Canazei there is an amazing gallery of dolls and toys by master Andrea Soraperra.

Business card

Val di Fassa in Italy often hosts European and world level competitions. For example, in 2013 the first stage of the Snowboarding World Cup and the men's slalom of the European Alpine Ski Championships took place here, and in 2014 the famous cross-country skiing race Marcialonga took place. Those who take up skiing for the first time, as well as athletes who feel confident on the slopes, come here. There are also interesting trails for professionals.

Trails, slopes, lifts

The ski slopes of Val di Fassa in Italy are recommended for beginners, as well as intermediate skiers - they will be as comfortable and safe as possible here. The length of the trails is approximately 200 km. The slopes are served by 59 lifts. For professionals and extreme sports enthusiasts there is the possibility of off-piste skiing. The best place for such a descent is considered to be the slopes on both sides of the Belvedere peak. Val di Fassa is divided into three ski areas, each with a separate ski pass. All three zones are covered by the Dolomiti Superski, a universal ski pass. There are six ski schools in the region, and you can learn cross-country skiing and snowboarding.

The famous black track Aloch-Piste will be closed in the 2016/2017 season due to lack of funding. Famous World Cup athletes performed there, and in December 2015 the night slalom of the European Alpine Skiing Cup took place. Perhaps the local municipality will purchase it, and after an infusion of investment, Aloch-Piste will reopen under the management of a new company.

This route was not used for connection with other ski sectors, so for ordinary tourists nothing will change radically in the ski area. Most skiers who come to Pozza di Fassa prefer the Sella Ronda circuit, as well as the slopes in the Canazei and Campitello areas.

The Val di Fassa includes about 10 different ski centers. This is a relatively new ski resort, but it has become popular quite quickly. Today Val di Fassa is considered one of the busiest resorts in the Dolomites, especially crowded here in the high season. The secrets to its popularity are simple: convenient location, beautiful scenery, good infrastructure and reasonable prices.

The local population, the Ladins, gives this resort a special flavor. They live in local villages, are very cheerful and hospitable, carefully preserve their culture and speak a Ladin dialect that is more than 2000 years old.

Ski areas

There are three main ski areas in the region. The first covers the area above the resorts of Campitello and Canazei (including Alba di Canazei and Penia), forming part of the Sella Ronda "circumnavigation". This is the most prestigious and lively part of the resort.

The second part offers skiing in the Tre Valli area, which unites the ski areas of Alpa di Lusia, Passo San Pellegrino and Falcade, as well as the resort towns of Moena and Passo San Pellegrino.

The third includes the resort towns of Pozza di Fassa, Vigo di Fassa and Pera di Fassa.

The first and second zones have a common ski-pass, the third has its own subscription. But all three zones are covered by the same “Dolomite Super Ski”.

Trails of Val di Fassa

The resort towns of Poza di Fassa and Vigo di Fassa are located in the center of the Fassa Valley, with easy access to other ski areas. Directly above them is the ski area Catinaccio - Rosengarten. Of particular note is the high-quality track directly above Pozza: it can be skied at night. The region is connected by ski lifts to Campitello di Fassa.

There are few difficult trails for professionals, but there are conditions for off-piste skiing: the slopes are very wide, and you can go to virgin lands from almost anywhere. The best slopes for virgin skiing lie on both sides of the Belvedere peak (2425 m). There are also good places on the slopes of Col-Rodella (Col-Rodella, 2485 m), but there are fewer of them and many of them are avalanche dangerous.

For intermediate skiers, the resort has many interesting slopes: the stadium between Col Rodella and Passo Sella (Passo Sella, 2214 m) with many long, wide slopes served by ski lifts. Other interesting trails are located under the Belvedere.

For beginners and intermediate skiers, almost all the main slopes of Val di Fassa, located in the intermountain saddle between the Passo Sella pass, the peaks of Col Rodella and Belvedere, are suitable. In terms of difficulty level, they can be called “blue-red”, although on the map they are almost all “red”. All trails are well maintained and always have good snow.

Hotels in Val di Fassa

The Fassa Valley consists of a dozen small and fairly large resorts, so there should be no problems with accommodation here. So, for example, there are more than 200 certified hotels from 1 to 4 stars here, and this is not to mention all kinds of apartments, garni, boarding houses, and b&b.

The most popular villages for accommodation traditionally remain Canazei and Campitello, due to the convenient location of hotels and lower ski lift stations. Also, hotels in Alba di Canazei, Pozza di Fassa and Vigo di Fassa (which also have a lower lift station), and in Moena, and then all the others fill up the fastest. Accordingly, the cost of accommodation in them is higher than the average in the valley.

"Treshki" in the valley is the most popular accommodation offering the best price/quality ratio.

There are no five-star hotels in Val di Fassa, but there is no shortage of comfortable and luxurious four-star hotels. Almost each of them offers a spa center with a sauna, a private pool, and half board meals - breakfast and dinner. "Treshki" in the valley is the most popular accommodation offering the best price/quality ratio. They also most often offer half board, and many boast their own sauna.

Ski schools

There are six ski schools in the Val di Fassa: in Canazei, Campitello, Pozza di Fassa, Vigo di Fassa and two schools in Moena. In Alba di Canazei there is a branch of the school from Canazei, and in Pera there is a branch from Pozza. In addition, Canazei has a cross-country ski school and a snowboard school. Qualified, often Russian-speaking instructors, as well as an abundance of sites and slopes for beginners, are their main advantage.

Entertainment and attractions

Outdoor skating rink, cross-country ski trails, dog sledding and snowmobiling. Canazei has a modern sports complex with a swimming pool, sauna and massage room. Numerous shops, bars, restaurants and discos.

The attractions are the fabulous nature of the Fassa Valley, as well as the cozy center of the villages: with parish churches, narrow streets, tiled roofs in the snow. However, you can also relax and spend half a day/day off the slopes here, for example in Trento or Bolzano. In addition, you can see the Andrea Soraperra gallery in Canazei, where the works of this sculptor and great toy maker are presented. You can not only enjoy the process of creating traditional wooden and other dolls, but also purchase your favorite pieces in the store at the gallery. Address: Canazei, Via Dolomites 109.

Every year in February-March, the Fassano Carnival is held in Val di Fassa, in which the same dolls of the famous master Andrea take part.

3 km from Canazei is the ancient sawmill La Sia from the 16th century. You can get there via the S641 highway, address: Via Pian Trevisan Penia, telephone: 0462 60 23 23, opening hours: 9:00-12:00 and from 15:00-18:00 Mon-Fri mid-March - mid-December.

There are several ski areas in the Val di Fassa. The largest and most popular of them is located on the slopes of Belvedere (2423) - Col Rodella (2485) above the resorts of Canazei and Campitello. A common system of cable cars and pistes connects it with other ski regions located around the Sella mountain group (3151), -, and; the total length of marked descents is 480 km.

Most of the Belvedere pistes above Canazei have a westerly orientation; only a few descents towards Arabba head northeast. On Col Rodella (2485) above Campitello there are a couple of northern slopes, but the main slopes face east. The only possibility of skiing into the valley is a narrow forest trail of medium difficulty leading to Canazei. To get there you need to go right when descending from Col Rodella, before reaching Pian Frataces (1715), and on the contrary, keep left from Belvedere. Unfortunately, these forks are shown very unclearly on the map of the region. From the finish of the track to the nearest gondola lift is a 10-15 minute walk, so during the day almost no one rides along it. It is used mainly for returning to the valley and in the evening it can be very crowded and broken. It is impossible to go down to Campitello on skis - only by cable car.

On the opposite side of Val di Fassa is the pretty ski area Ciampac - Buffaure; The total length of the trails is 32 km, and there are significantly fewer people here than at Belvedere / Col Rodella. The slopes in the Ciampac sector start from Sella Brunech (2428); those leading to Alba have a northeast orientation. The Buffaure pistes start at Col de Valvacin (2354), most of them are western. The longest, 6-kilometre, gentle descent through the San Nicolo valley finishes on the outskirts of Pozza di Fassa, at the gondola station - but you will still need to take a bus to the hotel where you are staying. A little over a dozen kilometers of pistes are laid out in a small ski area on the wooded hill of Ciampedie, overlooking the resorts of Pozza and Vigo di Fassa. The upper slopes of Pra Martin (2100) are oriented to the northeast; along the long “blue” path you can slide down to the village of Pera (1326). The winding “red” route leaves the station at around 2000 m in a southerly direction and ends in Vigo, at the funicular station.

Almost 40 km of marked slopes await skiers in the Carezza area. Most of the local trails are located on the lower, fairly gentle western slopes of the Catinaccio - Rosengarten mountain range (2981), along which you can travel without taking off your skis along the King Laurin route (see section).

For experts

Long groomed slopes for experienced professionals in Val di Fasse are clearly not enough. From the Belvedere / Col Rodella area, in search of “their” slopes, strong skiers usually go to the northern slopes of Porta Vescovo (2478) above or to Ciampinoi (2254) in. It is worth paying attention to the full, steep and hard “black” descent from Ciampac to Alba. There is a first-class 1.6 km long sports track on the northern slope of Aloch (1585) above Pozza di Fassa; You can ride here not only during the day, but also in the evenings thanks to artificial lighting (three times a week). A good track is laid in the Ciampedie area along the 4-chair Pra Martin; its upper “black” section Tomba is named after the famous Italian skier Alberto Tomba, who at one time constantly trained here... That, perhaps, is all that Val di Fassa offers to experts - however, there are still some off-piste options (see section) .

For advanced skiers

Skiers with average training like Val di Fassa more - the number and variety of slopes, the possibility of ski trips to neighboring areas and valleys.

On both sides of the Belvedere ridge there is a decent collection of spacious and light trails of medium difficulty. Their only drawback is that this sector tends to be very crowded: the skiers who climbed up from Val di Fassa are supplemented by those who came from and. There are especially long queues for the 6-chair Sass Bece (counterclockwise part of the route) - it is better to use the neighboring 4-chairs or Toe gondolas. On the eastern slope, the 4-chair Lezuo, which provides clockwise movement, also works with maximum load.

The lower forest route leading from Belvedere to Pian Frataces is a rather narrow, crowded passage, on which bumps form by midday. The descent there from the opposite slope of Col Rodella is usually in better condition: it is wider and straighter, although it is also quite crowded - it’s hardly worth going too fast. The upper part of Col Rodella has several very good red runs. Unfortunately, this sector of the region is not shown accurately on the map: looking at it, it is difficult to understand in which direction the chairlifts rise and where the tracks lead.

Intermediate skiers will enjoy skiing in the Ciampac - Buffaure area. An open, light, very easy trail runs from Sella Brunech towards Val Guimella; on some maps it has a “red” marking, on others it has a “blue” marking. Pleasant, moderately difficult descents start from Col de Valvacin. On Buffaure (2020), after a short traverse to the left, a long, very beautiful, high-quality track with soft turns in the forest area begins; up to the Malga Crocifisso shelter it is “red”, below it is “blue”.

Ciampedie is a family ski area, popular mainly with holidaymakers in Pozza and Vigo di Fassa. Leaving children and beginners under the supervision of instructors on a gentle training slope, more experienced skiers usually retire to the Pra Martin slopes. Easy, comfortable skiing in the Carezza area, over the Costalunga Pass (1752) and Nova Levante. Of greatest interest to advanced skiers are the upper slopes of Monte Coronelle (2337) and the spacious run-out along the 4-chair Paolina.

For beginners

There are no “official” “blue” runs on Belvedere, except for a short descent along the rope tow at the top gondola station from Pian Frataces. Meanwhile, in the middle, fairly flat part of the slope there are always enough beginners who, having stepped through the initial stage of learning, immediately begin solving more complex problems. As a result, they suffer themselves and create serious obstacles for experienced skiers. The situation is similar at Col Rodella.

The ideal training area is the spacious, very uncrowded rollouts to Ciampac. A couple of yokes work especially for beginners in this sector. Beginners can confidently handle the “red” track running along the double chair. On the next slope they don’t have to climb all the way to the very top of Sella Brunech, where it’s a bit steep - you can get off the 4-chair halfway. We recommend going down to Alba by funicular - and not along the difficult “black” route.

There is a short "blue" slope with a rope tow on Buffaure, above Pozza di Fassa. Excellent conditions for children and beginner skaters are created in the Ciampedie area. Campo Scuola's spacious, gently sloping training area is served by a comfortable 4-chair. There are always few people here, no one cuts anyone off or knocks them over. However, when going down the “blue” path to Pera or the “red” path to Vigo, you should still be careful: both paths laid in the forest are quite narrow.

The Carezza area is also largely aimed at beginner skiers. A spacious and easy route is laid on the northern slope above the Costalunga pass (1752). Beginners feel great on the wide rollouts along the Cristomannos double chair. Directly above Carezza there is a “splash pool” for the little ones. A bunch of rope tows allow beginners to move to the Nova Levante sector and return back without any problems, exclusively on gentle “blue” slopes.

Ski safari

From Canazei and Campitello you can almost immediately enter a circular route that opens up unlimited prospects for ski travel to the north, in, or east to, the Marmolada glacier (3342), on the plateau. Let us remind you that the total length of interconnected trails in the vicinity of the Sella mountain group (3151) is almost half a thousand kilometers.

If you want to get to Val di Fassa quickly, in about forty minutes, it is better to use the funicular that delivers to Col Rodella (2485) from Campitello. Going down the wide “red” track, keep left to reach the 4-chair Cavazes-Grohmann. On it, pull yourself up to the eastern slope and, again keeping to the left, roll straight to Plan de Gralba (1800), the uppermost village. A long, sometimes very gentle path passes the Passo Sella (2244); on the right are the steep rock walls of Cavazes (2810) and Piz Miara (2912), on the left is the bulk of Sassolungo (3181)…

To quickly get to and continue your journey to the Marmolada glacier or to the region, take the gondola cable car from Canazei to Pecol (1926), and higher - in another gondola or by cable car. Then go down to the middle of the slope, to the 6-chair chair, which will help you cross the Belvedere ridge (2423). From here a long, 6-kilometer route goes in the direction. Its upper section, along the 4-seat Lezuo, corresponds to the “red” marking; below is a very gentle “blue” slope. The road from Canazei takes less than an hour, to the Marmolada glacier - 2-2.5 hours, to Corvara (1568), one of the main resorts - about two hours. The peculiarities of skiing in these regions are described in the relevant articles.

Ski safaris options in Val di Fasse itself are much shorter. Alba and Pozza di Fassa are connected by a beautiful two-way route called skitour Panorama - which truly offers magnificent panoramic views. Having climbed from Alba to Ciampac (2100) and higher to Sella Brunech (2428), you can head west along the top of the mountain range. A combination of 4-chair chairs and simple “red” trails will help you through Col de Valvacin (2354) to move to the Buffaure sector (2020), from where you will descend into the picturesque San Nicolo valley and follow it to Pozza di Fassa. Unfortunately, it is impossible to get to the Aloch slope (1585) without taking off your skis - it’s a few hundred meters walk away. The gondola cable car will take you back to Buffaure, after which you will return to Alba along the already familiar road: two ascents and the same number of descents. The whole difference is that you will go up where you went down, and vice versa... A round trip walk takes no more than two hours.

You can take your own little safari along the slopes of Ciampedie (2000). We take the funicular up from Vigo di Fassa and follow the pleasant “red” path to the 4-chair Pra Martin, which extends to the 2100 m mark. We descend along the Tomba highway to Pian Pecei (1800), then along the “blue” forest path to the village Feather. From it, two successive, rather slow pairs of chairs are taken out to Pian Pecei; to go higher on Ciampedie, you will also have to use a 3-seat chair. Starting from the top station, the narrow and winding “red” descent leads to Vigo; its length is 4.5 km. It takes about an hour to travel around the entire area.

A short and easy ski safari in the Carezza area, skitour King Laurin, starts at the Costalunga pass (1752). After walking once along the slope of Pra di Tori, turn left and take the picturesque “blue” route along the gondola road down to the main exit of Carezza. The 4-seat Paolina will take you to an altitude of 2170 m, from where, keeping to the right all the time, you can go to Moseralm. Ascent on a rope tow, then on a 3-chair chair - and you are in the Nova Levante sector. Here, of course, it makes sense to climb up to Monte Coronelle (2337) to try out two moderately steep trails laid on opposite sides of the double chair. But it’s not worth going down to the village itself: the “blue” path leading to it is a dead end, so you’ll have to take a bus to get to the cable cars. It is better, alternating ascents and descents, to move along the western slopes back to Passo Costalunga. Thus, in a couple of hours you will get to know all the slopes of Carezza.

Off-piste

Of greatest interest to experienced freeriders is (2950), where a 65-seater funicular lifts you from the Passo Pordoi pass (2239). Going about two hundred meters to the right from the Rifugio Maria restaurant, to the Forcella shelter, you can go out into a steep and narrow couloir and go back down to the pass. Or traverse to move straight - to Piz Boe (3151), the highest peak of the Sella mountain group, and along the Mezdi valley to the village of Colfosco (1645), in (see page). Keeping to the left, after passing some fairly steep sections, you will enter the spacious but short, about 3 km, Val Lasties valley, lying between Sass Pordoi and Piz Cavazes. Following it in a south-west direction, you can roll past Rifugio Schiavaneis and Pallidi into Pian Frataces (1715). The total elevation difference on the descent will be more than 1200 m. Unfortunately, in order to climb Sass Pordoi again and repeat the descent, you will have to make a considerable detour.

On Belvedere, from the “red” route leading from the upper station of the funicular, strong skiers go to the left, onto the steep western slope, along which they roll out to Pecol (1926). Those who like to jump on hillocks will always find a good mogul area under the 6-chair lift. From Col Rodella you descend off-piste along the steep northern slope, next to avalanche barriers.

In the area of Ciampac - Buffaure on the western side of Sella Brunech you can walk to the left of the marked route, and on the northern slope of Col de Valvacin - to the right. Under the 4-chair Buffaure is not open, as shown on the map, but a fairly overgrown area with forest. In principle, the possibility of descending along the gondolas to the very foot exists, but we do not dare recommend this option to readers.

On Ciampedie, lovers of off-piste walks usually leave Pra Martin to the left, sometimes quite far; However, you shouldn’t get too carried away, so as not to “fall” into the Vajolet valley and taxi to the chairlift stations on Pian Pecei on time. In the Carezza area, on the slope of Monte Coronelle, there is something like an official, not very long and difficult “freeride zone”.

Snowboard

In the center of Belvedere there is a 350-meter Dolomiti Snowpark with jumps, rails and a boardercross track. The Col Rodella snow park (300 m) with a boardercross track is located on the opposite slope, under the 4-chair Cavazes-Grohmann. In the Carezza area, above the Costalunga pass, there is the Antermont Snowpark with a natural half-pipe.

">

Extraordinarily beautiful. You can admire them at dawn, on a bright winter day, and at sunset, when an amazing combination of light and shadow turns creamy-pink rocks into weightless “clouds”.

The Val di Fassa is famous and popular in the world. It is located in the Trentino region. Dozens of resorts that are recognized in Europe are united here. Transport links and trail facilities are unparalleled in the Dolomites region.

Where is the resort located?

The Italians call this resort a “winter dream”. And it’s not in vain. Its length in the Dolomites region is twenty kilometers at an altitude of 1440 to 2550 meters. It is surrounded by the picturesque massifs of Marmolada, Catinaccio, Sela, Sassolungo. It is separated from Verona by one hundred and eighty-five kilometers, from Venice by one hundred and seventy-five, and from Venice by one hundred and sixty.

The lower part of the valley is quite spacious, it stretches from the city of Moena to the north, gradually narrowing, from the upper point of Crepa Neigra it goes around the mountain range, turns east, and then rises to the Fedaia pass to the foot of the Dolomites. The picturesque chain of cliffs Catinaccio - Rosengarten - rises to the west of the resort. In the north there is the Sella mountain group, which is famous for its “ski carousel”. Both sides of the steep slopes are covered with dense coniferous forest.

The resort of Val di Fassa (Italy) has many routes that enable vacationers not to repeat the same path. Each time you can choose a new route and ride in different areas and directions.

All resort trails stretch for more than 220 kilometers. They are divided into skiing areas. Tourists who purchase a special ski pass can ski anywhere and use all lifts. Today, the ski resort of Val di Fassa, or rather, many of its slopes, are used for training and international competitions of professional athletes. But beginners also feel very comfortable here.

Ski areas

This resort is well known to lovers from all over the world. Canazei and Campitello are famous villages where professionals who have long chosen these places gather annually.

There is another famous ski area here - Tre Valley. It consists of Moena and Falcade, Alpa di Luzia.

Another ski area is located between Pozza di Fassa and Pera di Fassa. These routes are usually recommended for beginners. The village of Pozza is also famous for its Aloch springs, the water from which is rich in minerals and has healing properties.

The valley has excellent conditions for lovers of off-piste skiing. The slopes of the resort are quite wide, so you can go to the virgin lands from anywhere, and it won’t be too difficult to return to one of the lifts. On more serious routes you will need the services of a guide.

Vacation with children

Children won't be bored at this wonderful resort either. There are separate ski areas equipped with special lifts for children. There are children's parks in the valley, where kids are taught skiing or just walk and play with them. In Canazei there is a children's club Tananai, where teachers work with children. Here they learn the basics of skiing.

In Campitello, a children's sports school (snowboarding, telemark, alpine skiing), where thirty instructors work, awaits future champions. It accepts children from the age of four. There is also a school in Canazei (snowboarding, carving and telemark, alpine skiing).

How else to spend your time?

Val di Fassa is an amazing resort that, in addition to skiing, offers guests a lot of entertainment. These are open-air skating rinks, sled runs, and sports complexes. In the evening, you can have a good rest with friends or family in cozy restaurants and bars. Tourists can enjoy souvenir shops, shops, and night clubs.

Today, many people combine active holidays with excursions to Val di Fassa. Canazei, Bolzano, Trento are cities that are famous for their cultural and historical heritage. They are located next to the resort. One of the galleries located in the village (Andrea Soparetta) participates in the Fassano Carnival every year and presents amazing handmade wooden toys.

Where to stay?

There are several resort villages in the Val di Fassa (Italy). Campitello and Canazei are the most popular among tourists. In Campitello you can stay in one of the excellent 4* hotels, for example, Park Hotel Club. It has a good wellness center and an indoor swimming pool. You can choose Park Hotel. Last year I met the first vacationers of Grand Chalet Soreghes, which offers spa services to guests.

Not a bad standard of three-star hotels in Campitello. These are small but very cozy hotels, which are usually decorated in Tyrolean style. Families coming on holiday with children are better off choosing apartments or rooms in four-star hotels. The fact is that 3* hotels have rather small rooms.

Of note is the La Perla Hotel, located in the center of Canazei. Here you will be offered a jacuzzi, hammam, sauna. There are many three-star hotels and apartments in Canazei. The best hotels in Canazei include Dolomiti 3*, Astoria 4* located in the city center and four hundred meters from the ski lifts.

Nutrition

Many Val di Fassa have excellent bars and restaurants on their territory.
