Koronado Island. Koronado Island in San Diego

  • 01.06.2021

Navigation:

At the final day in San Diego, we went to the wonderful island of Koronado. This is such a kind, resort for rich Americans and tourists. Very cozy and pleasant. And by the way! Some are called his peninsula. And all because if you look at the card, the island will be connected with the mainland of the oblique, which is currently the Silver Strand BVD track. But before Koronado was really a full-fledged island! And then various trends have formed this braid, attaching it to the mainland. Now he looks like a ball on the rope;)

Our island-peninsula is famous primarily by the hotel Del Coronado, where more than half a century ago, the sensational comedy "In Jazz Jazz" with brilliant Marilyn Monroe was shot. This hotel was even awarded the title of the National Historical Monument to the United States! But later, a little later, but we will start ... Let's, perhaps, from the beginning!

How to get to the island of Koronado

From San Diego to get to Koronado in three ways:

1. On the coronado bridge on its own car (free) or bus number 901,

2. According to Silver Strand Blvd from the south of San Diego and from Mexico on Auto / Bass №№934 + 901,

3. On the ferry from the pier of San Diego (5 $ *)

Choose what you like more! Ride with the breeze at an amazing bridge on the supports with a height of more than 60 m and a length of almost 3.5 km? Or pass on the natural spit from the border of Mexico or from the south of San Diego? Well, for the most romantic natur, we recommend a boat trip on an authentic ferry on the picturesque bay!

How to do it, Chef?

We tell. On the southwest coast of San Diego there are two pier, from which you can get to Coronado on a ferryboat .

Koronado resort

Fairy Tale City, Dream City! I have complete confidence here that anyone can become happy. It is worth it only to settle in such a town :)))

We arrived here early in the morning, but life here already buried. But bulled so cozy and measured as a warm mineral source ...

Alexander wanted to go to Barbie Shop, but there he almost endured him. I agreed to take a picture only on a bench at the entrance. By the way, see this bowl next to the joyful Alexander? Such containers with water for pets are almost all public institutions. About how Americans love animals, I will write somehow a whole article!

But this iso ... This is a real find! During the walk, we stumbled upon a real American coffee shop, as in old films! And see: Time to have breakfast, and she is clogged to failure! Clayton "S Coffee Shop! They say, usually turns the turn, but a little later;)

The cafe is a bar rack in the form of a horseshoe, around which comfortable red chairs are installed. At the stools meet mostly local. I heard that this is their favorite breakfast place. Girl inside the rack serves fragrant coffee and tasty breakfast. On the side there are still ordinary tables with sofas. Home cooking, huge portions, authentic atmosphere and lively communication! Real American Spirit! Prices by US measurements are quite lifted. By the way, Clayiton's coffee house ranks second in Koronado in the category "Restaurants" according to TripAdvisor and has a $ icon (i.e. low prices). For example, sandwiches and omelets start from $ 9. Open from 6-00 to 21-00.

As well as slender rows of mannocks, grazing right on the road:

So, the eye on the sides, we did not notice how they reached the legendary Hotel Del Coronado ...

This hotel, which caused the city's education on the island, is truly unique. Now I will tell why.

10 amazing facts about Hotel Del Coronado

1. In 1886, three entrepreneurs with a dream about the construction of the most luxurious hotel in the world of the hotel bought a whole island. And in February 1888, Del Coronado Hotel has already opened here in all its glory! How did they do it? They developed a project of a whole city, with parks, infrastructure and pearls - the hotel's gorgeous in the world, which will attract a huge number of rich and celebrities in the city! And they started selling plots on their island investors. Their idea was so attractive and infectious that more than 10 thousand people fought for their land in the auctions! And by the mid-1987, entrepreneurs had $ 1.5 million for the construction of the hotel.

2. The entire hotel lighting and electrification system was developed by Thomas Edison himself. The hotel was equipped with elevators, telephone connection and fire extinguishing system.

3. The cost of building and equipping the hotel at the time of discovery was $ 1 million, while the cost of a standard room with a three-time diet was $ 2.5.

4. In 1891, the hotel was visited by the current US President B. Harrison, and since then there has been regularly resting the leaders of the country from Roosevelt to Obama.

5. Since the beginning of the 20th century, the hotel has gained popularity in the film industry: Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Rudolf Valentino and Mei West loved here.

6. Here a cult film "In jazz only girls" with Marilyn Monroe, although they say in the film that the action takes place in Miami.

7. Since 1977, Del Koronado has been recognized as National Historical US Monument.

8. At the moment, the hotel has a number of 700 units.

9. The hotel is open for inspection and inside and outside for tourists and excursions.

10. The cost of the hotel's rooms at the moment varies from 500 to $ 2,000.

Would you like to live inside the legend? Can you do this! ;) Book here the room is very simple through the bottom of the bottom.

Employees of exclusive, not shy in the means, I recommend to see numbers in. This is a complex of cottages on the territory of Hotel Del Coronado, located right on the beach.

But if financial opportunities do not allow you to be like Obama or Charlie Chaplin in this luxury hotel, you can stay in other hotels of the island (see the list and map you can, indicating the coronade in the form above) or in general in San Diego. And in Del Koronado, come on a tour, as we did. And now we will tell ...

What is inside?

And inside there Hall, Receptionist, Restaurant and everything that is supposed to have the hotel! Interestingly, the hotel was built wooden, and many wooden elements were used in the interior. Tourists are allowed to freely walk on the hotel and its external territory. Walking through the corridors, you will inevitably come across the photos of celebrities, staying at the hotel, as well as on historical pictures with filming and frames from films that were filmed here. The most popular was the famous masterpiece "in jazz only girls" in 1959 with Marilyn Monroe in the lead:

And of course, all sorts of shops that fit on the glory of the famous blonde :)) Here, for example, you can buy a suitcase with Marilyn Monroe:

Coming out of the hotel on the other hand, we fell to a beautiful adjacent territory that adjoins the Koronado beach.

We went there, because you have already begun to miss the Pacific Ocean ...

Beach Koronado

Our bad weather continued, and the ocean, despite all our love for him, remained the same HMUR and cold. I remind you, in the courtyard stood June! The cold wind blew off the water, but this is not at all scarecrow, whom Adrenaline was grayed, or special costumes (and maybe both):

Here, of course, it was not without a photo shoot (for all the pictures you can click to consider better):

Write in the comments that we are handsome, if you think so: D

Coronado - That's what is laid out with huge sandy and vegetable letters on the beach! Previously there was a word Beach, but he was spread by the wind ...

On the left - what we see, walking around the beach, and on the right - that the birds and satellites see:

And in conclusion - some facts about the beach.

Koronado Beach is one of the best beaches of San Diego and is included in the list of the best beaches of the world, not just the United States. It is very wide, about 150 m wide and is covered with small white sand with gluttony mica (from which it is sometimes called the beach of golden sands). Partially protected from the ocean Point Loma peninsula, so that the waves are less cool here, and the water for a couple of degrees is warmer than in other places of this coast of the United States. This could not be convinced of this, as you see by photographs, but believe in the word to other travelers;)

And finally, here it is in full of his glory! Enough!

Koronado Island in San Diego is one of the most beautiful, wealthy and attractive resorts in Southern California. A wide beach, aristocratic villas surrounded by gardens and fruit trees, a pompous hotel del Coronado and a serene atmosphere - after all this and go to Coronado. Therefore, if you have at least 1 free day and you are looking for something to do in San Diego, this place is required to visit.

The main attraction of Koronado is the Hotel "Del Coronado", which has glorified the island. The story began in 1886, when 3 Americans Elish Babkok, Hampton Stori and Jacob Grundaik, seduced by the expanses of the island, bought it about $ 100,000 and decided to create a spa community, organizing the Coronado Beach company. By 1888, they built schools, sports boat and baseball clubs, and also completed the construction of the Hotel Del Coronado, after which the city of the same name became the main resort. Thanks to Hollywood Stars, this hotel was added to the list of mandatory sights of the United States. Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Stewart, Lana Törsner and others were held here. In addition, it was here that the shooting of a cult film "In Jazz only girls" with Marilyn Monroe.

With the name of the hotel, they decided not particularly bother, because if we are talking about vacation on the island, then it is understandable in which hotel you need to stop, the more it is on the coast and really has to a luxury holiday. At the moment, the hotel belongs to Hilton.

It is also noteworthy of the name of the island. Translated from the Spanish "Coronado" means a crowned island, you can also guess, looking at road signs - the crown is depicted above the title.

His name is the island in honor of the archipelago of four islands located 15 miles from San Diego. They can be perfectly visible in clear weather from the Imperial Beach beach on the border with Mexico. They are called "Las Yslas Coronadas" (Islas Coronadas, crowned islands). The name gave them a priest Sebastian Viskiyan in honor of four crowned martyrs, where the crown or a crown serves as a symbol of a martyr. Although Californians themselves call the Koronado "Enchanted Island", which means the enchanted island.

The island and the mainland connect 75 highways from the south and the Koronado Bridge of the same name from the north, which is also a landmark and cost, by 50 million dollars. And they say that this bridge is in third place in the United States by suicide. You can also get to the island on the ferry (http://www.flagshipsd.com/cruises/coronado-ferry) for $ 4.75 in one direction. We chose a more popular way, especially since the bridge, cute types are open and with parking on the island itself there are no problems.

Walking around the island, you can pay attention to charming houses with their well-kept gardens. Fences as such are not, therefore it is created, according to a special, cozy atmosphere.

And if it turns out that you will get in the United States on the eve of Helloina, you can evaluate the Americans with some reason.

Streets here are direct like arrows. From one end of the island to another, you can go straight in about half an hour, while never turning.

When you come to the beach, you see huge boulders.

In fact, the word Coronado is laid out of these stones, which can be seen from the satellite.

Views from the island opens magic. On the one hand, endless expanses of the Pacific Ocean.

On the other - the best panorama of San Diego.

The Koronado Beach is included in the top 10 best beaches of the USA by Discovery Channel. But, in my opinion, it is not designed here for bathing, all the same, the water is quite cool - even in August, the average ocean temperature does not exceed 20 degrees. Koronado Beach, rather, more for contemplation, walks and reflections.

I always wade in the soul of places where it is really beautiful and lightly. Perhaps Koronado entered my top.

Bridge Koronado (USA) - description, history, location. Accurate address, telephone, website. Tourist reviews, photos and videos.

  • Burning tours around the world

San Diego Coronado Bridge, crossing San Diego Bay, it looks great from the Point Point Point (Cabrillo National Monument) and a pretty extent "makes" a view of the bay. The bridge was decided to build in 1926, but the US Navy leadership did not support the idea, fearing that the bridge could be destroyed by an earthquake or enemies, and then all ships at the San Diego naval base will be locked. It was possible to agree on the military to the city council only in 1964. And then, provided that the bridge will leave at least 61 m of the "road lumen" so that the ships can pass under it. In order to accomplish this condition and at the same time do not make the rise and the descent from the bridge completely dizzy, I had to lay a large loop at the entrance to the coronade.

Still, the military remained not too satisfied: after all, the atomic aircraft carrier of the "Nimitz" class without loading under the bridge will not be able to pass anyway.

The city legend states that in order to deliver the Navy, the central span of the bridge was made by floating. That is, in case of collapse, it can be simply towed on the waves.

On the supports of the eastern part of the bridge, you can see huge murals, which are part of the Chicano Park, the largest collection of artistic Mural Chicano in the world.

The construction of the bridge was launched in 1967 it took 20 thousand tons of steel on the creation of a structure, which was opened by 100 m to the bottom of the bay. The bridge was opened for a car traffic in 1969. His total length was 3407 m, and the canvas rested on 27 concrete supports, which were at that time the highest in the world. Movement on the bridge is carried out in both directions in two lanes (in the middle there is a third, reserve).

From 2008. Once a year, cyclists get the opportunity to ride over the bridge during the Bike The Bay event.

Bridge Koronado

On the supports of the eastern part of the bridge, you can see huge murals, which are part of the Chicano Park, the largest collection of artistic Mural Chicano in the world. The creation of Mural was a response to a surge in public discontent in 1970, when the townspeople complained about the troubles that the bridge delivers residents of nearby areas.

Koronado Bridge - the third in the US for suicidality after the Golden Gate in San Francisco and Aurora in Seattle. From 1972 to 2000 More than 200 suicides jumped from him.

In 2008, a competition was announced to develop a bridge illumination. Funds for the project (75 thousand USD, but the city authorities assured the public that there will be no single dollar taxpayer - only grants and donations) were allocated only in 2012, it is expected that the bridge will shine new lights no earlier than 2019, But today in the dark time he looks very impressive.

Practical information

The San Diego Coronado Bridge connects one of those mentioned in the official name of locations on the other. On it passes the track number 74.

Cross, crossing! Coast left, shore right.

In 1969, San Diego enriched to another landmark ... and not just at the landmark, but on the symbol of the city. Still there is no guessing? .. Maybe the tips will help ... Curved and elegant, blue as the ocean water, over which he "hangs", long and slim ... Fanfare! San Diego Bridge - Koronado (as well as known as the coronado bridge).

And here he! (inseretic truth)

He is visible from many points of San Diego and Koronado. Probably, only the one who walked along the downtown of San Diego and the nearest areas with "widely closed eyes" could not see him. All, enough preludes. Now about the bridge!

A little story ...

The first time the question of building a bridge San Diego - Koronado Rose at the end of the 20s. The population of the city grew, the influx of tourists increased, the military again ... the ferries were simply not cope with the number of wishing torsion ...
The very first idea of \u200b\u200bthe construction of the bridge - the recovery bridge from Market St. in San Diego to First St. In Coronado. With this project, some strange situation, or rather, is not a strange situation, but the interpretation of the story ... someone writes that the project was approved, but as a result, rejected by an obscure reason. Someone writes that local residents voted against the project, because they were afraid of even more influx of people. However, now it is no longer so important.

The second project "Crimp" was rejected by the military who had been pantically afraid that the bridge could collapse due to an earthquake or because of the strikes on him during aviation raids. A collapsed bridge will be a barrier to bring ships from the bay. Some military officers were so negatively tuned to the idea of \u200b\u200bthe construction of the bridge, which did loud statements in the spirit "If the bridge between Koronado and San Diego is built, then the Navy will leave San Diego."

The third attempt was more successful. In early 50s, apparently when the transport situation was even worse, the city council once again thought about the construction of the bridge ... And by 1964, even the military surrendered and gave good to the construction of the San Diego bridge - Koronado (apparently, they also became completely inconvenient. Get home and vice versa). Single restriction: The height of the bridge should be 200 feet (about 61 meters). These 200 feet were needed so that the ships of the Navy could easily run on the base and from the base.

Construction of the San Diego Bridge - Koronado was started in February 1967 ...

All the same construction. Only the rally "slightly" closer. (Photo from the archive of the California Transport Department)

And the solemn opening of the San Diego Bridge - Koronado passed on the day of the 200th anniversary of San Diego - August 3, 1969.

A little about the bridge itself ... Technical details and any such

Robert Mosher was chosen by the chief architect of the bridge and he had to work out and think about the solution to the problem with a height of 200 feet. Why was it not easy? The thing is that in order to make the bridge high and at the same time lifting it unrocity , the bridge should have been long .

But in this, there was a "bottleneck" - the distance between the shores of San Diego and the Koronado is completely small.Of course, it would be possible to make a "race" to the bridge not "above the water", but "above the land" (as the junction of motorways), but in this case this option was not suitable. The fact is that Koronado is not so big to make such transport changes. What would be difficulties, Mosher is very elegantly coped with the task. In order to make the San Diego Bridge - Koronado is long enough, he decided to make it curved (in the form of walked). Decided and did. The middle part of the bridge will be rotated by almost 90 degrees, this is the optimal degree to achieve the desired height, observance of safety technician and all that is presented to bridges. As a result, the overall length of the bridge turned out 3407 meters. The heights of 200 feet (61 meters) were also achieved, it was possible to say the plan even exceeded, because the highest point of the bridge is 246 feet (75 meters).

San Diego Bridge - Coronado in the whole "Growth". When you look at it with "water", it is not even very clear that it is curved

"The upper part" of the bridge (spans) "hold" 30 supports made in the form of arches. This idea Mosher "borrowed" from his previous project - the bridge over the I-5 highway to Balboa Park. I do not know what Mosher was guided by choosing this option, but it looks pretty ... stylish and slightly, or something. As if the long podium;) It is difficult to explain.

Arches supports. Elegant, really?

To build a bridge of San Diego - Koronado took 20,000 tons of steel and almost 72,000 cubic meters of concrete ... And this, not counting those materials that needed to consolidate and install supports ... (for some supports had to drill a 30-meter foundation on Bay Day).

The cost of this awesome design was $ 47.6 million dollars.

Money, Money, Money ...

In the States, travel in many bridges is paid, the San Diego Bridge - Koronado was no exception until 2002. This bridge, by the way, was the last paid bridge in Southern California. On June 27, defeats solemnly stopped. It's funny, but the inhabitants of Koronado missed this fact - they were very afraid that the cost of the passage on the San Diego bridge - Koronado, already a whole $ 1, kept many people from visiting Koronado. Paid travel on the bridge was introduced immediately after its discovery and accounted for 60 cents, after a couple of years it was raised to 1 dollars. San Diego Bridge - coronedaled paid, in order to return to the budget to the funds spent on its construction. Everyone was returned back in 1986, but, apparently, 16 years have gathered with thoughts to make this important step. Or maybe at the reconstruction collected ...

Clarifying.

According to statistical data for 1999, 68,000 vehicles passed on the bridge, and the fees amounted to about 8,000,000 per year.

Once strip, two stripes ... and alone cars ...

San Diego Bridge - Koronado was designed as four-way: two stripes from San Diego to Coronado and two - in the opposite direction; Both sides were one-meters of the curb, which were used by the "travelers" to stop to make photos and simply admire the surroundings. In 1993, apparently, due to the increased number of cars, the bridge crossing the bridge daily, the California Transport Department decided to use these spare bands more rationally. As a result of 4 bands for movement and 2 two, the trumina turned out to be a 5-strip track; The average third strip is reversible (a special machine is even highlighted for moving the fence between the directions of movement).

Enjoy the view from the San Diego Bridge - Coronado can only be from the car (buses or motorcycle). Pedestrians and cyclists entrance to the Bridge "Ordazan". Only one-one once a year, in May, the leg of a simple person (excluding those who conduct inspections, painting and repairing the bridge) can stand on the San Diego Bridge - Koronado. And this day is the day of the Bay Bridge Run / Walk race, organized by the US Navy. It is necessary to pay for participation in the race, so that the campaign on the bridge is not cheap.

Somehow it looks like this. By the way, the number of originally looked people at this event sometimes raises. (Photo from the archive of the event organizers)

"The Christmas Tree, Sign!" or San Diego Bridge - Koronado at night

And in the evening, after sunset, on the San Diego bridge - Koronado is lit lights, and it is transformed ... Even in such a simple lighting bridge looks quite curious. Yes, what's curious. Just Magic!

View from Coronado. Tidelands Park.

Covan with Koronado. View of almost the same place, but can be seen "loop"

In general, by the Day of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the San Diego Bridge - Koronado - August 2019, the lighting system is planned to be replaced. Even the backlight has already chosen ... for a long time, back in 2010. However, problems with financing made themselves to know, so the date of "implementation of a new project project" is so unclear.

How it will all be possible to look at the video below. This is a few "trimmed" version, "complete" can be viewed on the site of the port of San Diego. In the original version, information will also be burned out about the plans of the authors of the project Peter Finca and Maeer Mark.

Judging by the description of this project, the result will be very very impressive and extravagant. Lighting will be performed using LEDs with a programmable shift of colors. It is planned to use generators that transform wind energy into electricity (this is so funny spinning for 36 seconds.). So everything will be not only beautiful, but also most environmentally friendly and profitable. Lighting will be two-level: parapet and support. According to the project the illumination of the parapet will "depend on" from the density of traffic on the bridge: LEDs will be programmed to transmit direction, speed and intensity of motion. Separately the shipping span will be covered: the backlight will respond to the movement of large ships. The backlight of the support can be changed "by mood": to make it different at least every day or in a clearer year of the year. Judging by the project on video, the lighting of the support can even be used as "background" for Ferrokes.

Several unexpected facts ...

1) Despite the fact that the bridge is not very high, it enjoys incredible suicide popularity. It closes the top three "US SUITSDAL bridges", after the "Golden Gate" (San Francisco) bridge and the Aurora bridge (Seattle). Since 1969, 254 cases have been registered, of which 9 people survived, and one "suicide" turned out to be "murder."

2) Painting San Diego Bridge - Koronado is an endless process. 6 people paint / tinted bridge almost all year round to protect it from the effects of salt water.

3) in answers.yahoo.com (the same as OtVet.mail.ru, but only for English-speaking questions), another version was found, why the bridge is such a form and length. The version in the spirit of the "Conspiracy theory" ... The bridge was designed so long so that it could be qualified "as a bridge that can be built for taxpayer money" (at the expense of federal financing). But this version is completely no criticism.

4) several Supports of the bridge (from San Diego) became directly by art: Almost all the height of the support is painting a mexican wall painting (Chicano Murals). Well, the supports, not wishing to be, became part of the "folk" park (Chicano Park). The drawings are really huge, colorful and look exotic and very mexican;)

Where should I look at the San Diego Bridge - Koronado?

View of the bridge San Diego Bridge - Koronado is good from any place (where he is visible from, of course), but for the completeness of the picture I advise you to consider it from all sides. And when you do it, you will understand why ...

  • San Diego: Corner where Park Blvd is intersecting. and the track CA-163 (very close to Balboa Park). But there it is necessary to look at dawn after him, but so that it was even early morning. Fascinating spectacle part of the bridge against the background of the downtown height in the rays of the sun.
  • Koronado: From the park Coronado Tidelands Park; From this side "Loop of the Bridge" in all its glory is shown;).
  • Koronado: To see the "loop" from the back side, you need to sneak into the territory of the Golf Club next to the Tidelands Park; Well, if you are afraid to get a ball somewhere ... then you can stand up and near the golf club :)
  • An unusual look opens all from the same Coronado From Glorietta Bay Park.
  • From Downstauun Embankment San Diego. The appearance is also not bad, but personally for me already have some kind of fit.

And some more bridge ...

Koronado Island is the most interesting and most famous place in San Diego. This is a real resort paradise in a million megalopolis. Here are city beaches of San Diego, the best hotels and the best restaurants. The island is located in San Diego Bay and is located pratically parallel to the coastline.

On the island you can get along the Bridge Coronado Bridge. This bridge was built in 1969, its length is about 3.5 kilometers, and the road leaf is located at an altitude of 61 meters. The own photo could not be done, so I found a photo of the bridge on the Internet:

I must say that the place is really picturesque: it is nice to just take a walk on the island. But the most important attraction of the island is of course the hotel del Coronado, built back in 1888. This is what the hotel looks like today.

Most of our compatriots are already familiar with this hotel for a long time ago, but many do not even suspect. It was at this hotel that the famous comedy "In Jazz Jazz" and the views of the hotel, which "Bitcho Nabe Millionaires" very often skipped on the screen

It is noteworthy that the film takes place in Florida, but nevertheless to the director soiled in the soul of Del Koronado that the shooting was decided to carry out here.

Yes, what is there to talk, views here are simply amazing! And the fact that here "Many rich Pinocchio" can be seen with the naked eye

Next to the main building there is a street with villas, the so-called Coronado Village. Behind each house your own parking spaces. Convenient, you will not say anything

But there is a little easier at the hotel

I specifically looked at Bucking to see how much it is worth staying in Del Koronado - it turned out not quite a wonderful prices. You can stay in a room from $ 250, quite a normal price for such a great place.
