Why blue? Previously, they were painted in blue to distinguish from everyone else. In general, the fortress had more than 20 fortified passes. In the case of siege across the blue gate, they could go besieged to hit the flank coming on northern part Fortress enemy. Nearby was located the properly covered path, from which the fire was conducted, which did not give a precipitant to hack the gate.

- IN this time We are opening the earthen masses that have accumulated on this site for the last two centuries of the existence of the fortress,
- reported Development Director foundation "Archeology" Oleg Markov.

Before the start of work, the territory was examined by sackles from the center "Leader" of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia. Clearing showed that the thickness of the soil in the gate area ranges from 20 cm to one and a half meters. Research participants expect to find interesting findings. Thanks to the excavations, it is possible to open the previously unknown elements of the architecture of the Kerch fortress.

In parallel, work on fixing graffiti left by "artists" on the walls of the fortress. But this, as they say, female work, and therefore she lay on the shoulders of the girl's volitioners. During the existence of the outpost on its territory, both builders and defenders of the fortress and foreign invaders were visited. During the Great Patriotic War, Kerch's fortress moved several times from hand to hand.

As clarified in the Foundation, all works overseen the head of the research department "Fortress Kerch" K.I.N. Yuri Bailik, the Volunteers of the Archeology Foundation in the fortress Kerch is headed by Alexanderhremenko.

- Cape Ak-Burun (translated from Crimean Tatar " white Cape"), Where the blue gate is located, is a separate fortified area of \u200b\u200bdefense of the Kerch fortress, the internal structure of which has yet to be studied,
- noted Oleg Markov.

By the way, it is interesting not only by its fortifications of the XIX century, but also archaeological remains of ancient time. There is a hypothesis that on Ak-Bourun is located ancient city Herranius mentioned by pomponya chalk and pole.

- In principle, this is possible, although in the list of titles of ancient settlements, preserved by a written tradition for the seaside section of the Eastern Crimea from Nymphi to Pantikaty, there is another possible antique city - Diya,
- told the director of the Foundation.

In any case, determine which city is at Cape Ak-Burun, only systematic archaeological excavations will be able to be able to. At the moment we are just knowing that "Father of the Bosporian Archeology" Paul Dubryux In its description of this area, it has repeatedly paid attention to the rapid destruction of the remnants of the ancient walls and buildings, which disappeared from the surface literally in their eyes. According to him, 500 cubic meters (4900 m3) of the stone were taken out of one such point for construction needs, and the stove for receiving lime was probably destroyed another twice as much.

According to his observations, only a fortress wall with towers and gates passed on two kilometers long. Later, when Cape Ak-Burun firmly entered the military authorities, these antiquities became almost inaccessible to researchers and gradually began to forget about them.

- Interestingly, in 1858, on Cape Ak-Burun, the Kurgan Pavlovsky was excavated, in which the burial was detected dated to the IV century to our era. The gold jewelry found there allowed us to suggest that this is the burial of the priestess of the demeter temple,
- emphasized in the Foundation.
... Our volunteers had already had to participate in the excavations of the Demeter Temple, however, on the other side of the Bospop Kimmeria in the village of Vestnik (Anapa district). Now they may have the opportunity to explore the worship of the cult of this goddess already in the Crimea.

The fortress "Kerch" or Fort Totleben is rightfully considered one of the largest defensive structures built during Russian Empire. The fortress is located on Cape Ak-Burun (Pavlovsky Cape), in the place where the Kerch Strait narrows. The history of the fortress made a lot of tragic and glorious pages. Legendary artillery batteries, extensive warehouses and mysterious basement maze to this day are attracted by researchers and tourists.

The first military fortifications on the banks of the Kerch Strait began to erect at the end of the XVIII century. It should be noted that, according to the Parisian peace treatise, Russia was forbidden to have coastal fortresses in the Black Sea. A cunning way to bypass this document came up with Major General Kaufman. According to his project on the coast of the Kerch Strait, the construction of a new fort, the technical parameters of which did not fall under the definition of a serf structure. From 1857 it was necessary to start the construction launched for almost 20 years. Since 1859, the military engineer Eduard Totleben was led by the construction work. Thousands of workers worked on the construction of the fortress, the costs of work amounted to more than twelve million rubles from the state treasury. Even the construction of the famous Kronstadt was spent less means.

Clearing the territory for the future fortress, the builders blew up several Kurgans. But, if possible, the mounds and the remains of the ancient cities, which are saturated by the area on the shore of the Kerch Strait, tried to include in the structure of the fortress. Upon completion of the construction, the fortress "Kerch" occupied 250 hectares. It was planned that there would be a garrison of more than five thousand people in it. On firepoints could accommodate 587 guns. From the command premises and the caasemates to the firing positions were so-called lost - the system of underground strokes with a length of several kilometers. The fortress washing a wide ditch. The artillery positions have arranged underground powder cellar. In addition, the fortress was equipped with a countermic system and a large reservoir. Each separately taken structure was an independent fortification-defensive structure.

The main function of the fortress was the defense of the southern borders of the Empire. Therefore, a significant part of the fortifications and coastal batteries were focused on the Cape Ak-Burun and Pavlovsky Cape, as well as on the heights adjacent to them. Construction ended on the eve of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877. But the Full Party of Batali Fortress "Kerch" never became. The time spent on the construction of a defensive structure was playing with him a cruel joke: the rapid progress of military affairs is already by the beginning of the 20th century made to recognize the fortress "Kerch" outdated. Since 1905, it was mostly used as a warehouse, and political prisoners were kept in the atmospheres.

First World I. Civic War Passed for the "Kerch" fortress without significant events. But the 20s brought with them the first adversity. Almost all terrestrial fortress facilities were looted and partially destroyed. Only by the beginning of the 30th Kerch fortress began to be used as a warehouse for the needs of the Red Army and Fleet.

During the Great Patriotic War In the walls of the fortress, bloody battles were repeatedly unfolded between the German invaders and the fighters guarding the garrison warehouses. In 1942, in the course of the departure by Soviet soldiers, part of warehouses with ammunition was undermined.

In the post-war time, military warehouses were again located in the fortress, special barracks were assigned to a disciplinary battalion. The fortress "Kerch" was completely under the control of the military unit until 2003. Then part of it was transferred to the Kerch State Historical and Cultural Reserve.

Now accessing the significant territory of this grand construction on the shores of the Kerch Strait is open to free visits. An independent visit to the dungeons is not recommended, since many of them are abandoned and potentially lifeless.
