Trekking in Nepal: routes, tracks, preparation and my personal experience. Himalayas - theory and practice

  • 23.09.2019

The government of Nepal began to issue permits for short-term trekking in the Himalayas only in 1964. Currently, the organization of this type of tourism is engaged in many agencies, both in Nepal itself and beyond. Travel agencies offer mountaineering and trekking in the mountains of various durations and levels of difficulty, so that almost anyone could afford to get in touch with the unique surrounding world of these places.

The main trekking and climbing options are available in four regions of Nepal.

1. North of Kathmandu in the Helambu, Langtang valleys and the sacred lake Gosainkund.
2. In the east, treks lead to the Everest region and include a visit to the base mountaineering camp, the villages of local Sherpas, Namche Bazar, Lukla and the Thangboche monastery.
3. In the western region, tracks are held in Surket, Jumla and to alpine lake Rara.
4.In central region tracks start from Pokhara.

Trekking to the Himalayas from Pokhara

Pokhara is the starting point for trekking to the Annapurna area. From here there are a large number of routes, from one day to several weeks. Pokhara has an airport from which you can fly to Jomsom (2770), the capital of Mustang. The ticket price is about $ 80, the flight time is 30-40 minutes. Some tourists, after arriving in Jomos, go down, back to Pokhara, and some up into the mountains. Alternatively, walk to Jomsom and return by plane. The route to Poon Hill (3210 m) is very popular, as it does not require very serious physical training as for mountaineering and it offers a breathtaking view of the Himalayas.

I decided to do this route.

Annapurna trekking prices

In order to go trekking along Annapurna, you need to issue a permit. Independent tourists today a green card is issued, its price is $ 20, for those who send via travel agencies Agencies issue a blue permit for their clients, the price of which is $ 10.
You can also hire a porter, that is, an assistant who will carry things for you, and can also serve as a guide. The price of a porter is about 800-1000 Nepalese rupees per day, depending on how you agree.

There are at least two options for trekking to Poon Hill.

The first one is four days. First, two days you need to go to the village of Gorepani. On the third day, early in the morning, climb Poon Hill. The ascent takes about an hour, although you only climb 400 meters higher. Immediately after the ascent, two days of the return journey to Pokhara.

The second option is three days. The first part of the trekking to Poon Hill is the same as the four day trek. But the reverse the road goes along the same path that we took to Poon Hill. And the way back is not two, but one day.

I have chosen a three-day route. Firstly, my main goal was Poon Hill and the most beautiful views from it. Secondly, I didn't want to spend an extra day looking at the Nepalese villages, since I had already seen similar ones when climbing. If I were to go higher and reach the Mustang, then undoubtedly I would like to visit those places. But that's a completely different story. And now a photo of my trekking and the Himalayas, which I managed to photograph from Poon Hill.

An excavator is working at the top at the very edge.

Along the trekking route, there are many villages with small cafes mainly aimed at tourists. For local residents, one of the few ways to earn extra money. And some sell fruit right on the road, as in this case.

In many villages there may be no more than a few dozen people.

After spending the night in Ureli Village, a magnificent view of the Himalayas opened up.

The village of Ghorepani is 2874 m. It is considered a large village, the number of inhabitants is about 700 people. Here I had my last night. In the morning we had to reach the trekking bed target, Poon Hill 3210 m. best views to the Himalayas.

It was cooler than usual this year. I had to spend the night in a room at zero temperature.

But this was compensated by the awesome view from my window.

After spending the night in the village of Gorepani, we climbed Poon Hill

This photo was taken on Poon Hill at 4:12 am.

How to go trekking in the Himalayas of Nepal on your own? In fact, everything is simple and even easier than walking on wild mountains Altai or Tien Shan, where everyone seems to speak Russian, but no one is around.

In Nepal, there are a lot of tracks that follow certain paths, paths prescribed in maps, guidebooks, and it is not necessary to prescribe them, because there are always people and signs on the paths themselves, and every 30-100 minutes of the way guest houses with accommodation and food (even pizza can be ordered right at the foot sacred mountain Machapuchare) - it is impossible to get lost. Let's find out how to go to the Nepalese track independently and competently.

Nepalese track- this is not a tourist trip in the usual sense of the word: you do not need to take food, a bowler hat, a tent and not even a sleeping bag (not to all tracks) with you, because as soon as you get tired of going, you can stay overnight in any of passing guest houses.

When is the best time to go to the track? This is definitely October and the very beginning of November. Who is not afraid of the cold - all November. April-May is also considered a high season, but I don't really like this time because of the rains and clouds. I like to go to the treks more in March - this is not yet a generally accepted season, but for me it is no longer so cold and there are no heavy rains yet.

It rains in summer in Nepal: water on the trails (and leeches climb into your sneakers), and clouds in the sky (and there should be Mountain peaks). It is cold in Nepal in winter. Of course, it's great to go to the trek in February, when there are no traffic jams from tourists on the trails, the sky is clear, and a crust of ice crunches on the morning water for washing, but it's cold - you can't do anything with it, especially in Nepal, where there is no heating. By the way, you can see the Nepalese temperature in degrees.

Tracks in Nepal - which is better and which are (short)

Next, we need to decide which track to go to. It is not necessary to go to the ABC described below (Annapurna) - there are many tracks and if you go to any book store or a shop where cards are sold, then you can choose a card with any name you like and go where you suddenly wanted. Briefly about the tracks, it will turn out like this:

✔If there is time: Everest base camp (from 2 weeks and longer), (one of the most beautiful and wild!), Ring around Annapurna (up to 30 days, but now roads have been laid here and the track can be significantly shortened), Lower Dolpo (from 2 weeks and more) and many others.

✔ If you have money: Upper Mustang - it takes both time and money, one permit to this track costs $ 500. The track to Everest Base Camp is actually inexpensive, but not short (from 2 weeks), the cost is slightly more expensive than a regular track (we put $ 200 in the cost of the plane to the starting point).

✔ If there is no time: We look at all the other tracks, there are quite a few short ones and even they can be shortened. A short and high track - meeting the dawn on Poon Hill (4 days), Joms can be made quite short, well, the track to Annapurna Base Camp - some pass it in 20 days, or you can go the other way and do it in a week. And now more about ABC.

ABC track - to Annapurna base camp. Description and preparation

The path is about 80 km, the climb from 1300m to 4123m. On the way 6-7 days. If you hop on the way back, the path will be longer, maybe around 100 km (8-9 days).

Preparing for the trek: permits, porter, transport

To start the trek from Kathmandu, you need to get to Pokhara (by bus - $ 10, taxi - $ 150, or by plane - $ 100).

Get a permit and team in Pokhara(permission to visit the territory of Annapurna) you can independently. It costs $ 40 for individual travelers to be issued in half an hour here: 28.198867, 83.969007 - walk 15-30 minutes from the hotel on Lakeside.

Or get a group permit, which costs $ 35 for each, if you take a porter or guide for the group (you can have one for 10 people). In this case, permits are issued through the agency where you take the porter.

Porter service cost- about $ 15 per day, including food and accommodation on the track. The porter can carry up to 15 kg of your extra items. In fact, so few things are needed that a porter may be needed only as another person in the team, plus a good discount on permits - especially interesting for groups of 5 people or more.

Good inexpensive agency, which I can recommend for booking transport, issuing permits and exchanging dollars: "Four brothers", is located directly opposite God’s Father Pizzeria (the pizza there is bad, despite the reviews in the Tripadvisor) here: 28.215587, 83.958344.

We go to the track

Start from Pokhara better early in the morning - about 6 o'clock. The first point is Nayapul. You can get to it in several ways:

1. Order a seat in the minibus at any tourist shop on the Lakeside in Pokhara. The cost is 500 rupees / place (approximately).
2. Get early in the morning to the bus station by taxi for 500 rupees (you need Bus Station to Nayapul in Pokhara). And from there take a local bus for Rs 200 to Nayapool.
3. By taxi Lake Side Pokhara - Nayapul (2.5-4 thousand rupees, depending on the situation with gasoline).
4. By jeep from Lake Side right to Siwai (beyond Nayapul) - the best place to start the trek. The cost of a jeep is 7 thousand rupees.

Back from Siwai to Pokhara it is easier to leave - by a local bus, or by passing jeeps.

Track expenses: food, lodging

Food in Pokhara is quite cheap, prices in cafes are lower than in Russian ones. The cost of food on the track is about the same as in Russian cafes (more expensive than below). You can see the photo of the food and the menu.

Guest houses on tracks cost 100-500 rupees per room (food is more expensive). If you only spend the night, but do not buy food, then you will have to pay for a room not 300 rupees, but 800.

Daily expenses on the track on average: 1000-2000 rupees per day (plus or minus can be very different, depending on individual appetite).

With myself you can take Snickers, adjustable noodles (sometimes you want to sip hot and meaningless, and on the track it costs 400 rupees per pack), limes - if you like to drink hot water with real lemon, nuts, apples, dried fruits at will - all this is sold in Nepalese shops in Pokhara and Kathmandu, and on the tracks many times more expensive.

By the way, about the guesthouses on the track. During the high season, after lunch, all overnight stays may be occupied. But you can call in the morning and book your seats in advance. It is important that there is a cellular connection only before Bamboo, no further, but you can use walkie-talkies in passing guest houses. If you go with a porter or a guide, then he will solve this problem, the main thing is to have time to coordinate the places of overnight stays in advance. If the group is small (2-3 people, then you don't have to bother and book seats already upon arrival).

What to take from things

I walked the whole track in sneakers, a T-shirt and light pants (go hot, but it's cold to spend the night). Near the base camp of Annapurna, the coldest night is and in the morning you need to go in the minus (snow or frost on the ground, somewhere -5C). List of things (damn, I hate writing this, but I probably should):

  • Shoes: boots or sneakers. I go to all the tracks in Palladin sneakers (firm) - they go well both in the heat and in the snow. walks in flip flops and socks in general, and most bother with trekking boots. The boots are heavy and warm - keep in mind that you will have to walk most of the trek in the heat and possibly carry your boots in your backpack.
  • Sleepers for sleeping and showering in parking lots (cold and stone floor).
  • T-shirts - the number depends on the intensity of your perspiration), I take 2 pieces, but 5 is not enough for someone.
  • Light trousers or long shorts for every day - go hot,
  • Warm pants - they should be as warm as possible and as light as possible (you can take warm underpants and top pants separately). In the evenings it is cold and above zero and minus.
  • Shirt with long sleeves.
  • Warm jacket (lightweight).
  • Warm downy but light jacket.
  • A hat, gloves (I constantly forget to take them, nothing is normal), several pairs of socks (you can wash them on the way, but sometimes they do not have time to dry).
  • Sleeping bag liner - if you are a squeamish person and do not want to hide in a blanket, into which someone was already breathing, then you can take well, not a sleeping bag (do not drag it), but the liner is such a light thing that you can climb into and hide from above already anything.
  • I usually don't take pills with me (but many bother) - I think it's dangerous - to pop pills at a height. To avoid diarrhea - do not overeat, so that there are no miners - it is better not to eat meat (in the tracks it is written on tourist signs) and not to rush, not to run, walk slowly, without stopping your breath, breathe like a sleeping child, climbing stone stairs ...
  • Sneakers, Rolton (oh, these are not clothes ... but still very good things in the track).
  • You don’t need to type anything extra, then you’ll drag it around and think that I’m a fool, why am I carrying this outfit with a tripod.

On a trek with a tent, sleeping bag and bowler hat

This is also possible. Then the backpacks will be heavy, tourist - everything is real. But you still have to go among ordinary people and also spend the night next to the guest houses. You will also have to buy water and in the evenings you will want to sit in the kitchen in the light of electricity, and then order something from local food, which is the biggest expense on the track.

In general, hauling tents and bowlers is only relevant if you are completely rogue (it happens, I don't see anything bad, on the contrary - more adventures and hardcore). But this is unlikely to help much, costs are still inevitable.

Photos from the trek to Annapurna Base Camp

Now the track to Annapurna in photos. Go. The track starts at This is my very favorite place because mountains, fresh juices and tranquility.

There are several options for the route from Pokhara to ABC - through Nayapul, through Phedi, calling from the Ring around Annapurna, etc. The first route is more convenient because from the very first day you do not need to wrestle along the stone steps a section of the path that can be traveled by jeeps.

From Nayapul to Siwai, you can drive jeeps for Rs 7,000 per car.

Endless stone steps in the Himalayas - this is how most of the trails on the tracks look like. The steps in these places have existed for a very long time, the locals used them even before the appearance of tourists. With the development of tourism, there are simply more of them.

This is what the guest houses look like on most tracks in the Himalayas.

Some food from my tracks:

At an altitude after 2 thousand meters in the tracks there are signs on which it is written that from this moment it is not necessary to eat meat. Meat thickens the blood and if you don't eat it, you will feel better at altitude and may not even feel the "miner".

At the stop called Jinu (in front of Chomrong), you can swim in the hot springs. And despite the fact that you need to go down to them for about 30 minutes (and climb back up) - they are worth it! It's only better to do it on the way back.

Life hack- in the morning there are few people at the springs, and in the afternoon and in the evening there is a lot of tin.

Such signs hang along the tracks on almost every guest house: the number of hours for the transition from guest to guest.

In November, it may or may not be snowing in the Machepuchare Base Camp area.

Here it is - the main point of the whole track. When you leave at five in the morning from Machepuchare Base Camp to ABC (Annapurna Base Camp). This splendor is better experienced than reviewing hundreds of photographs.

At the very edge of the Tibetan plateau in the shadow of the Himalayan peaks lies Dolpo, (Dolpo, Dolpa) is a legendary land cut off from the world, closed to tourists for many years. Despite the fact that this is an alpine region, there is almost never snow in it. Our journey begins from the Juphala airfield, where we will fly from Nepalganj, a town that is easily accessible by air and by road from Kathmandu. Traveling through the Dolpo region has its own special appeal: the local population still lives in primitive conditions. The Dolpo people wear hand-made clothing. It is one of five regions where the pre-Buddhist religion Bon Po still exists, dating back to the 1st millennium BC. The route passes through three high transfers: Kagmar La (5115 m), Baga La (5090 m) and Numa La (5360 m), through the azure and serene Lake Phoksumdo and ends in Juphala, where the trail descends to the Tarap Khola gorge. Dear friends, lovers mountain climbing The international consortium ClimberCA invites you to climb the Kanchenjunga massif with us. Departure Dates: March 26 and September 16

Despite ours, we have never gone on long mountain hikes before.

Therefore, for the first time, we decided that a four-day radial route on Poon Hill, without a high likelihood of developing altitude sickness and with a maximum ascent of 3200 m, would be sufficient.

The main starting point for trekking in the Annapurna region is the village of Nayapul, which is located at an altitude of 1070 m. We took a taxi to it and paid 1500 rupees for four.

It is quite difficult to get lost here - firstly, there are many pointers and maps

and, secondly, there are no less tourists moving in small groups towards the rise. In the neighboring village of Birethanti, in the middle of the road, there is a checkpoint, which is checked, and after 200 meters another one, where tourists are registered in TIMS (Trekker's information management system), once again specifying the route of movement, which looks like this :
Nayapul (1070 m) - Ulery (1960 m) - Ghorepani (2860 m) - Poon Hill (3200 m) - Deurali Pass (3180 m) - Tadapani (2630 m) - Nayapul (1070 m).

1st day - from Nayapul to Ulery

We started at about 10 am. In the first half of the first day, the climb was rather gentle, so we walked cheerfully, chatting cheerfully and enjoying life.

A stormy mountain river under the bridge

The road is quite scenic with stunning views and passes through many small villages

To prevent the roof from flying off in strong winds, it is pressed down with stones, an original approach to construction

On the way, we met local residents who live an ordinary life - they go for firewood, grow and sell tangerines, graze goats

Didn't forget to take halts

And here is the first snow-capped peak

January is the coldest month in Nepal, therefore, the most unpopular among tourists, but despite this, we regularly met other trekking lovers.

Some tourists who don't want to lug their heavy backpacks take porters. A porter (sherpa) is essentially a loader, often they carry such huge trunks that it is difficult to imagine how it can be lifted at all, not to go uphill. But the most unexpected load that we saw behind the porter's shoulders is .. a person (yes, in the photo on the left there is really a person in the basket!) They also carry non-tourist goods - in a basket, with a rope attached to their heads.

The last part of the way (about 1.5 hours) is a rather steep ascent along stone steps, so when we came to Ulery (1960 m) there was no former ease, but nevertheless we came to it rather quickly, earlier than planned, so we thought about going to the next village, but then we decided to stay. Reading in the guidebook about tea houses with an overnight stay, which were supposed to meet us on the way, we imagined it a little differently - a lonely house in which dozens of tourists spend the night.

In fact, it turned out that the mountain village is a few dozen houses with restaurants, inhabited by local residents - gurungs. Moreover, the main source of income for them is precisely restaurants, and housing is offered in the background - they willingly give discounts on it, in one place we were even offered free rooms, provided that we have dinner and breakfast with them.

And the explanation for this appears very quickly, after examining the proposed rooms and studying the menu. Housing, as a rule, is about the same everywhere - hastily knocked together from planks houses, often with finger-thick slots. Considering that it is noticeably cold here at night, especially in winter, the main criterion when choosing a home is the number of cracks, wind direction and the number of blankets offered. Well, consider that you broke Jack Pot if you managed to find a room on the second floor through which the pipe from the stove passes =)

Of course, there is no toilet and shower in the rooms, but happiness if they are at least inside the building, and not on the street. Hot water is almost everywhere, but in most homes it is solar-heated, and therefore slightly warm rather than hot.

But the prices for food here are not at all encouraging - 1.5-2 times higher than in decent establishments in or. The cheapest dishes start at 200 rupees, so many backpackers carry dry pasta, known in Russia as "bum-bags" - they are light and satisfying. But the hit of mountain restaurants is undoubtedly tea. It is served here both in cups and teapots, and in 4-liter thermoses. Since the rooms are cold, and no one is drawn to go there, and the trekking day usually ends at about 4 hours, from this time and hours until 10-11 pm everyone gathers around the stove and sips seagulls. Everyone kills time in different ways - someone reads, someone communicates, but we played jungle speed, donated by friends on New Year(friends, thanks again 😉

2nd day - from Ulery to Ghorepani

On the second day, the climb also went partly along stone steps, and partly along paths through oak groves with small respites. We left early, so we had a brunch at about 11 a.m.

On the way, in a pile of brushwood near one of the houses, we looked after a couple of good trekking sticks =) We asked the owner for permission to take them - he kindly leveled them for us and did not even ask for anything for them.

Snow began to appear at about 2500 m,

Completed the climb in the village of Ghorepani at an altitude of 2860 m, with characteristic blue houses

Almost at the entrance to the village we came across a .. deli =)

Mountain children who meet on the way ask for sweets - we specially bought a bag of sweets downstairs, so there was something to please them

At an altitude of 2800, tangerines no longer grow, but cabbage has taken root well

Local men while away the time playing cards

and women, wrapped in shawls, watch everyone who walks along the road

the hostess invites you to stay with her

Although altitude sickness, in theory, should begin at about 4000 m, but already here most of us, to one degree or another, felt unwell. Keeping in mind the main principle of mountain hikes "rise high, sleep low", which says that the overnight stay should be lower than the high point ascent for the day, we decided to do a radial and went part of the ascent to Poon Hill. Even before reaching the top, the views are amazing

Our village is already below

Snow-icy paths

Despite the cold, everyone is happy

The last look at the snowy peak and rather down into the hot shower and to the stove

I wanted to go to sleep, but in the room there was an oak tree, and it was warm near the stove, therefore, nibbling, we sat and warmed ourselves.

3rd day - from Ghorepani to Tadapani and ascent to Poon Hill

One of the key points of the route is Poon Hill Peak, it is best to climb it early in the morning in order to meet the sunrise at the top, so we planned the exit at 5:30. We woke up, put on as much warm clothes as possible - it may take a long time to wait for the dawn at the top, armed ourselves with flashlights and hit the road.

Since we spent the night on the outskirts of Gorepani, almost at the very foot of Poon Hill, we climbed faster than it was described in the guidebook. A flashlight is a useful thing, but when everyone goes up in single file, one after another, it is not particularly needed. There are many people who want to see the sunrise at the summit, even in the cold winter months.

What was really needed during the ascent was a stick for support - the road was icy and it was rather slippery to climb, and even more so to descend, it seemed like there was even one fall, but not serious :)

Marina was the first to climb, however, no one doubted this 😉 Marina was great, she set the pace, did not give up - the climb was quite steep and slippery, the height difference from 2860 to 3200 m. then I just sat and waited for dawn, sipping hot tea / coffee, which could be bought right there, someone jumped, trying to keep warm, someone insisted on photographic equipment and took the first pre-dawn shots

It's time, the beautiful mountain has opened

How, without the Nepalese colorful mantras

Photo for memory

The peak offers a wonderful view of Annapurna, but it was illuminated by a pink glow for only a few seconds.

Here is the post-dawn footage

I don't want to leave so quickly

The last photo is at the top and it's time to stomp down for breakfast 🙂

Satisfied with the beauty we saw and the vigorous start of the day, we went down from Poon Hill to refresh ourselves and move on. Here we said goodbye to Yura, Ira and Marina - because of the strike in Pokhara, they had to cut back on trekking, and they went down the same route as they came, having covered the same distance in one day.

And we went to the next village, and there was a little embarrassment. We left the hotel and asked a local how we could get to Tadapani - he waved to the side and we headed in that direction. After half an hour of continuous descent, we remembered that we were supposed to have a pass ahead, so the road should go up - we looked at the map, and it turned out that we were going in the wrong direction. Why local sent us the other way, it became clear when we returned to Gorepani - besides Tadapani there is also Tatopani village, find 10 differences =)

One of the pressing problems in trekking is drinking water. You can't take a lot of it with you, the prices for it in mountain shops bite, so we had 2 options: a boiler, which we prudently bought in and a special cleaning solution - adding 3 drops of which per liter of water, you can get neutralized water, though with the smell of bleach. On the way, we also came across a third option - available, though only after a certain height =)

The road to Tadapani leads through the Deurali Pass, which is one of the most difficult sections of the route. The ascent is quite steep, besides the steps are icy

At the very top is a nice stupa with a small cafe

and breathtaking mountain views

Nepalese mantras lured to take a couple of photos on their background

And the descent turned out to be even more fun - even sit on the sled and slide down))

The snow-covered gatehouse looks exactly like a toy

Picturesque snowy ravines

and a lot of icicles

Without the sticks found the day before, it would be very tight

Fortunately, there are tea houses on the way again, where you can eat and relax

Brave porter

Well-deserved rest after a hard descent

Some tourists go down in "crampons"
