Tower at the Cathedral Square field of miracles. Four pearls of Square Miracles in Pisa: Piazza Dei Miracoli

 • 23.09.2019

All major attractions of Pisa are focused on the square around the Cathedral of Pisa and the Pisa Tower. It is called Piazza Dei Miracoli - Wonderland Square (And personally, I immediately remember Pinocchio, instilled coins) ...

Main attractions Pisa:

Piazza dei Miracoli.

Piazza del Duomo, world famous called Piazza dei Miracoli.(Square miracles), includes main attractions of Pisa: Cathedral (Duomo), the famous falling Pisa Tower and Baptistery. The area was included in the World Heritage List in 1987.

The area is a pedestrian zone and is a large lawn. The current species area received only in the 19th century, mainly due to the work of the architect Alessandro Gerandsca, who led the restoration work of famous monuments. The center of the square is the Cathedral (Duomo).

The first stone of the famous falling Pisa Tower was laid in the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin on August 9, 1173. Although the signatures of the authors remained on other monuments on the square, the Pisa Tower remained without a signature that he gave rise to a considerable amount of debate on the subject of the Tower Authorship. Due to the fact that the tower stands on the unsubstantial sandy soils and its foundation is only 3 meters, it began to be launched Already in 1185, the tower began to fall and tilted that she stopped the work for almost 100 years. Giovanni Di Simione, busy at that time, works on the church of San Francesco, was hired to continue the work. Thanks to his skill and architectural experience in using the inclination effect, the work continued until defeat at Meloria in 1284. The seventh and the last ring of the tower used as a bell tower was created and manufactured by Tommazo Pisano in about the middle of the 14th century.

Raised 300 steps of the tower will have to be on foot, defeating a considerable queue in the cash register, located at the foot of the Tower (you can buy a ticket in advance Online).

Baptistery Pisa.

The construction of the Pisa Baptistery began in 1153 under the leadership of Diothisalvi, the architect of the church of the Holy Sepulcher. In accordance with the inscription between the two columns of the building, it was reconstructed in 1278. Extremely little information has been preserved on the exact method of building and changes. The current building of the Baptistery is surrounded by arched spans, decorated with heads and sculptures, which are believed to be made by Nicolas and Giovanni Pisano and are considered one of their most significant work. In the center of Baptistery is a beautiful font; The department of work of the great Nicolas Pisano (1260 g) is located next to the altar.

Each country must have monuments that are symbols. Italy is absolutely impossible to imagine without a falling tower in the city of Pisa.

The Pisa Tower is part of the grand complex, which was built in the Middle Ages for the money of the local nobility somewhat away from the city center.

The architectural ensemble on a huge area includes the Majestic Cathedral of Our Lady of Ascension, Baptistery, Bell Tower and Cemetery.

What prompted the then the pisan aristocrats to start this ambitious construction, remains a mystery ...

The Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio in his novel "FORSE CHE SI FORSE CHE NO", published in 1910, called the Cathedral Square in Piza Miracoli (Piazza Dei Miracoli). The name has taken place, and now otherwise no one calls the Cathedral Square in Pisa. Sometimes you can hear the name - the field of miracles (Campo dei Miracoli).

At first in the 11th century on the square, a huge Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built. The construction has become the first temple in Italy, built on a cross-shaped plan.

Then the huge Baptistery Battistero di San Giovanni was built, which was built for a very long time - from 1152 to 1260. It turned out some kind of completely unearthly object ...

Marble Baptistery is an example of mixing styles. We started to build it on the project in the Romanesque style, and completed already with the gothic elements.

Both the Cathedral, and Baptisters stored inside the wonderful creations of Masters Giovanni and Niccolo Pisano, full of allegorical meanings, and here there is a famous chandelier - Lamp Galilea. But, alas, we could not go inside - probably the facilities are open only in the morning hours, and we came to the miracles area at sunset. So, we will strive to return to Pisa ...

The focus of all the miracles on the square is, of course, the famous falling tower.

Elegant bell tower (campaign) was built in 1173 somewhat away from the cathedral. The architecture of the Pisa Tower is uncharacter for Catholic buildings, oriental motives are traced in it. Some experts believe that it even resembles a minaret. The height of the bell tower is 56 meters. Due to errors in the calculations of architects and the soil instability, the tower leaned and continues to fall. The problems with the verticality of the bell tower began during construction, which was so 200 years stretched. At this moment, the deviation of the Pisa Tower from the vertical axis is already about 5 degrees.

In 2001, difficult works on the restoration and strengthening the Pisa Tower, which should suspend the fall process were carried out.

Potrested foundation of the bell tower today is reinforced with powerful concrete blocks. The tower was declared sustainable, builders gave a warranty for 300 years. Although some pessimists argue that she can collapse at any time. Today you can go up on the tower, paying for this pleasure of 15 euros.

There is no reason not to trust the competent commission, which has permitted a tour of the Tower by tourists, but the construction produces such a fragile and unstable impression that the desire to get to the bell tower of 294 stone stoned steps we did not arise. Inside the Pisa Tower is also very interesting - many galleries are decorated with carved ornaments. In the center of the tower there is an opening room, on the walls of which are depicted by the inhabitants of the sea. Three twisted stairs lead to the bells with 7 bells, each of which is configured to a certain note. The most severe bell of the Pisa Tower weighs about 3.5 tons.

The falling tower overgrown with rumors and legends. One of the most famous tells, as an architect (perhaps Bonanno Pisano) after the end of construction quarreled with the duke, who did not like something, and he refused to pay for work. Then Pisano went to the bell tower, stroked the third to the right of the column and commanded the tower to go behind him. The tower leaned. The frightened duke immediately paid out, but the tower remained inclined forever.

Scientists, however, confirm that the soils in these places are really weak and could cause an inclination. In Pisa, there are enough inclined towers and buildings (let not so much) besides all the famous bell tower.

We have photographed such pealed buildings on the embankment opposite the San Martino quarter.

On the lawn in front of the Pisan Tower (by the way, there are no signs about it for anywhere).

We also made a couple of pictures, depicting the support of the tower from the last strength, but decided to keep them in the personal archive.

Another local attraction is a small fountain with angels.

We waited for the onset of darkness, walking along the evening pisa. And they did not regret that they returned to the area of miracles. All facilities were covered, which looked even more huge and mysterious.

In the northern part of the Square of Miracles. Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunt is a monumental covered structure - Camposanto Cemetery. The legend states that he was erected on the ground brought from the Golgotha mountain in the 12th century. According to the same legend, the buried bodies in this land are decomposed per day.

The cemetery building was built in 1464, built it over 200 years. Camposanto cemetery is famous for its sculptures, mosaics, frescoes. There is also 3 chapels on the territory of the cemetery. We did not go to the other side, after all, the aristocrats buried there are respect ...

Since 1987, the unique miracles area in Pisa is protected by UNESCO.

Some fascinating place, completely different from all I have seen before ... Something still there is an unearthly in these facilities ...

I think there is no civilized person left in the world, who would not hear about the falling Pisa Tower. This miracle has already become the object of tourist pilgrimage, and photographs with an uncomplicated plot, where tourists "support" the falling bell tower, no one will not surprise anyone. Another thing is the remaining Treasures of Pisa, About which I did not know anything before my decisive way. The main reason I decided to devote a separate post to them is the fact that i liked them no less, and maybe more than the tower itselfwho became one of the characters of all Italy. In order to get acquainted with them, we will go to the miracles area.

Square wonders or ( Piazza dei Miracoli.) Located in the historic part of the ancient italian city Pisa, in the Tuscany region. "Wonderful" Name Square has been wearing for more than 100 years, since the Italian poet Gabriel D'Annzio in one of his novels dubbed the famous Square " Piazza Dei Miracoli ". The new name was quite suitable for the image of the architectural masterpieces and entered all the Maps of Pisa.

On which transport you would come, find the square in the city itself will not be no difficulty: Crowds of various tourists, a variete stretching along the streets of the medieval city, will definitely lead to sights. And in times of low tourist activity, the road to the square of miracles will help to find numerous pointers depicting a falling tower.

Interesting fact: In the Middle Ages, Pisa was a rather successful city-republic, which was actively enriched at the expense of maritime trade, while in the state of continuous war with neighbors. In the XIII century, during the dawn of the Pisa Republic, the city was intensively built up with architectural masterpieces in the Gothic style. Constant work on improving the appearance of the city led to the emergence of his own art school. And in the XVI century in Pisa, which has already lost its power, from the top of the falling tower threw the cast-iron nuclei of a misconceptional Galilee, trying to understand the laws of the universe.

You can get on the square from three sides. Confidently make your way to goal through the crowd of unpleasant black immigrants, persistently offering to buy "Versace" glasses, umbrellas, scarves (depending on the weather), we pass by a firm step by shops with Chinese copies of the turrets by tourist pricesAnd through the houses see the recognizable silhouette of the tower. A few more tens of steps - and before us the impressive size of the area, acquired by the fence. On the perfect green lawn, under a closer look, thousands of tourist eyes are located four architectural masterpieces.

Four treasures

1. Falling Tower

The first thing we have opened before, when we went to the square from Via Cardinale Maffi Pietro, There was a Pisanskaya tower, surrounded by a crowd of tourists, frozen in front of lenses in comical poses. Hundreds of people at the same time competed, who will make the most "interesting" frame, in which the model "supports" the tower is most unusual in this angle part of the body. The entrance to the tower had a queue patiently waiting for the rise to the top of tourists. This pleasure is paid and, as for me, a little interesting.

What is the tower itself? He brought worldwide fame, of course, her drop in almost nine centuries. And so it would be an ordinary bell tower or campaign, which is by no means the main part of the ensemble. But the miracle remains a miracle! Despite the fact that the roll appeared during construction, the stubborn Pisans brought the case to the end, and, as it turned out, not in vain. And, although falling towers really a lot even in one Italy, Pisanskaya - the most famous thanks to the incredible corner of the tilt and hardness of character. The bell tower was shaking an earthquake, she survived the fighting and inept attempts to help her and, as a result, surrendered to the joy of tourists and the Italian government. As far as I know, thanks to modern life jackets, the tower stopped his fall and even a little leveled.

My opinion: The Pisa Bell Tower is uniquely included in the list of "Must See" of each traveler. The only drawback is its fame. After watching a billion photos, already somehow perceive the attraction as something familiar, only the dimensions of the real object are surprised. Well, the crowd of tourists, frankly, interfere with feeling the majestic atmosphere of this construction.

Since the famous falling tower is a bell tower, it means somewhere near the cathedral should be. And he is here. The magnificent cathedral is not only well preserved, but also, as for me, overshadows all other buildings of miracles.

Began to exist back in 1064 after the victory over Saracines Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta (The Assumption of the Virgin Mary) is a unique sample of the Pisa Romanesque style. I read - and myself did not believe. Romanesque style, which built Orthodox monasteries and churches with thick walls and tiny windows, it may be so chic.

The decoration and construction of the main temple did not spare the wealth of the richness of the Saracinov, and here in Venice there is a Cathedral of St. Mark - it was necessary to do not hit the dirt face. The construction of Santa Maria Asunda entrusted the best Italian architects, which in two centuries, replacing each other, built the largest Christian temple of their time. Conducting at the base, the five-frontest cathedral has changed his appearance several times: the interior has reached this day, equipped after a fire that flashed in the XVI century. White and black marble used in the walls and floor decoration, the gold-plated ceiling, bright frescoes borrowed from the Palermian column mosque - all elements create an indescribable feeling comparable to delight. The cathedral is not at all similar to the modest abode - this is the celebration of luxury and splendor! In short, I was impressed!

The baptismal or baptistery - separate buildings with such appointment are quite rarely found in architectural cult ensembles that have come down to this day, since they were common in the early Christian period, when there was a need to baptize a large number of adult people. The Pisa Baptistery was a company to the Cathedral from 1152 to 1260. In the center of the baptism, there is a large font for holding a rite and a carved Department of XIII century. The dome is marked by the figure of the main Baptist in Christianity - St. John. Baptistery, like the bell tower, also has a small slope.

4. Campo-Santo Cemetery

Located in the northern part of the Campo-Santo Cemetery Square ( Campo Santo,Holy field") I gained your name thanks to the legend, according to which the desperate miner servants brought the lands from the most Jerusalem to arrange the desperate ministers and even Califa himself. At the perimeter of the last place of resting the famous Pisantsev, a cloud was built - the covered bypass gallery, under the deaf arches of which are the ancient Roman sarcophages and ancient statues. The holy land, unfortunately, could not protect 23 unique frescoes The works of the Italian masters of the XV century, who once adorn the gallery. During the Second World War, the projectile destroyed on the roof of the club destroyed works of art.

All four objects of the Ensemble of Square Miracles are made of light gray marble and decorated in a similar style, which creates a surprisingly harmonious picture. Frankly, most of all I was struck by the interior of the cathedral, where you can look at marble curls, columns, frescoes and family coat of arms of noble citizens of Pisa.

Very advice in advance to decide what to upset, so as not to spend time before the cash desks. We chose a ticket for 6 € and visited Baptistery and Cathedral.

The time of work depends on the season, so I do not see the point of writing it separately - see.

- near the cashier there is a storage class where you can and need to leave all the extra things;

- Do not deny yourself the pleasure of being sought on the perfectly clean lawn to the sights - this makes many Europeans. Here you can have a snack and just lying to enjoy the view of marble handsome men;

- After the Square of Miracles, go to walk through the ancient streets of Pisa - it will bring no less pleasure. You can pick up one of the recommended pedestrian routes;

"It was in Pisa that we tried the most delicious and cheap ice cream."

Pisa is a riddle city. Historians still argue about his origin, art historians are trying to open the veil over the mysters of the construction of architectural monuments famous for the whole world. But so far the area of miracles, where the Pisa Tower is located, does not reveal all his secrets. Obviously one thing: it is from this architectural ensemblemade back in 1987 to the list of objects World Heritage UNESCO, and Italian revival began.

Pirates of the X century

In the X-XI centuries of Pisa, then still had a free way to Tirren Sea. According to the Arno River, it was one of the richest cities of the old world. Moreover, the origin of its wealth is associated not only with a favorable geographic location, but also with successful marine raids on Mediterranean cities. Roughly speaking, the Pisans were nursed with piracy, including slave trade, and nothing was afraid.

To get to the area of miracles will have to walk a little on foot

Nothing, except for the eternal flour of hell, is so eloquently described in the writings of the fathers of the Church and sermons the priests that these "pictures" were constantly before the eyes of even the most unfine female female. And it does not matter whether they were born by the inflamed imagination of the sinner or imprinted by unknown artists on the frescoes of the first christian templesThose who have been found in the money was a real opportunity to repent and get at least a temporary release of sins. It was enough to sacrifice the annon sum in favor of the Church or for the construction of the temple - and again go to search for adventures.

True, hiking on the cities that are under the control of the innerians, in that epoch, as you know, were quite an awake business. In 1063, after a particularly successful raider, the Pisans brought several marble Corinth columns from the main mosque of the city. The column was immediately applied: one of the poorest quarters on the outskirts of Pisa was completely demolished, and at its place - the very, on the square of wonders (Piazza Dei Miracoli) in 1064 began the construction of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assund (the Assumption of Our Lady).

Construction of the cathedral continued for two centuries

Thanks to numerous donations, money for so large-scale construction in the church, of course, were. The first organized crusades arrived here. One of the most active participants was just the Pisans who received exceptional privileges on trade with the East.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and other wonders on the square

The construction of the cathedral continued for two centuries. In his architecture, several styles were fancifully mixed up: Romanesque, Byzantine, Spanish and Arabic (Pisa successfully fought with Moors). The pearl of the temple is the marble department of the beginning of the XIV century with many sculptures of Giovanni Pisano. But this is no longer frozen in unnatural poses of the figures of people and animals characteristic of many sculptural images of that time. In the works of the artist, it is clearly visible to the orientation on the best ancient samples, and not the static Byzantine style dominated at the time. In other words, the sculptures adorning the department, it is quite possible to attribute to the pre-substial.

Marble Department of early XIV century - Cathedral Pearl

However, the history of the Renaissance era is customary to start with earlier works of Niccolo Pisano, Father Giovanni. To find them enough to make literally a few steps and enter Baptistery. Its construction began in 1152 and also continued for two centuries. Sculptures of Niccolo Pisano decorated with the Baptistery Department. The plots of compositions are traditional - "Christmas", "worship of the Magicians", "bringing to the temple", but the figures are given enough non-traditional for that time an additional volume, and their postures resemble the poses of the ancient Roman statues.

But before inspecting sculptures, it is worth paying attention to the unique mosaic floor, the patterns of which resemble ornaments in Alhambre. Unique and acoustics in Baptistery. To demonstrate it in the room every hour, the singing appears and take three notes in a row, which under the archning of the building merge into a single chord.

Department of Baptistery decorated with sculptures Niccolo Pisano

From their campaigns, certain treasures brought certain treasures. From the fourth crusade to the city for the construction of a cemetery for noble pisanties, a sacred land with Calvary was delivered. The opinions of historians are diverged here: by one sources, it was only a small capsule, in other other 50 ships. Whatever it was, but Square Miracles Another miracle acquired a miracle - the Camposanto necropole (translated from the Italian - "Holy Field"), that is, literally in the Holy Land.

The cemetery is a closed fit - an indoor gallery fragrant internal courtyard. Under the zods of the gallery there are unique marble tombstones, each of which is a separate work of art, and sculptures of famous natives of the city, in particular, the famous Mathematics Leonardo Fibonacci.

Under the arms of Kamposanto gallery there are unique marble tombstones

Kamposanto - The only victim from the bombing of the Second World War is a monument that miracles are famous for. The most injected by the frescoes, and among them and the work of the famous Florentine artist and Bajuar began the early XIV century Buffalmakko. True, the plot of the frescoes is pretty gloomy - "Triumph of Death". Currently, this work is almost completely restored to sketches and drawings made in the XIX century.

Pisan Tower and how to find it

Whether the curses robbed by the pisans have reached the sky, then the Pisans themselves did not diligently diligently for the construction of temples, but most medieval monuments of the city stands on their foundations, gently expressing, not quite exactly. Including Baptistery, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and buildings outside the area of miracles. Leads the corner of the tilt, of course Pisanskaya Tower.

However, this is also a completely rationalistic explanation, confirmed by numerous studies and reconstructions. The fact is that the Arno River, such treacherously changed its channel in the middle of the XIII century, has a rather branched network of underground tributaries. Purability of the soil and predetermined the instability of the foundations of buildings.

The Pisa Tower is a cathedral bell tower, standing apart from the main temple

About what is and where is the Pisa Tower, Blogoitaliano has already written in. But this monument is so interesting and popular that it is impossible to mention him again, speaking about Pisa, it is impossible. Especially since the Pisa Tower is practically the symbol of the city and one of business cards All Italy.

Its construction began in 1173, that is, almost immediately after the Baptistery and even before the appearance of Camposanto cemetery on Piazza Dei Miracle. Pisanskaya Tower - This is not just one of the decorations of the square, and the cathedral bell tower. The tradition of construction campaign, that is, the bells, standing apart from the main temple - is generally one of the features of medieval Italian architecture. It is explained to such a whim simply: in the construction of Campanil, the Italians focused on the experience of Muslims, built minaret separately from the mosque. Resonance from Muzzin's voice, not to mention the Christian bell tower, could, in view of the imperfection of the then structures, to engage the temple at any time.

How because of the resonance finally did not fall the Pisa Tower? And this is another of the mysteries that miracles are rich. But, most likely, the case is in greater strength of the vertical design, and not in problems with the foundation. After the next restoration since 2001, the Pisan Tower, along with other monuments on the square of miracles, is reopened to visit.

Square wonders in Pisa Produces an incredible impression. This is the embodiment of the most significant and glorious historical period Pisa: All delets, wealth and power of the Pisa Marine Republic were concentrated in three buildings: Cathedral, Baptistery and Tower. The Republic of Pala, money flowed, was dissolved. Marble masterpieces were left on a green field as a reminder of the former magnitude of Pisa. There is also a hidden treasure in this field - Campo Santo Cemetery. It is hidden behind the wall and does not participate in the initial shock effect. But then you enter under its arches and fall under the quiet spell.

The area of miracles was created within two and a century (with a cemetery - four).

In 1064 construction began Pisan Cathedral, And in 1118 he was consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,

from 1152 to 1363 built baptistery,

Pisa Tower erected from 1173 to 1319,

memorial cemetery Campo Santo - from 1278 to 1464.

Swimming on such ambitious construction allowed trade and military successes Of the Pisa Maritime. In 1063, the Pisans were traded by the Arab Palermo, and this victory laid the beginning of the Great Construction, which was further fed to the means produced during the seizure of other territories.

For the great idea, the corresponding space was required, and it was allocated on the edge of the city, under the city walls. It was not empty: even during Etruscov, a ritual ceremony was held on this field (the remains were found near the founding of the Pisan Tower ancient Temple). In the Romans there were residential buildings here, and in the Middle Ages - necropolis and temple.

The remains of the previous structures were demolished, the field was cleared and systematically one after another began to build architectural masterpieces while the square did not accept today's appearance.

Pavel Muratov very accurately wrote: "The Pisan Square seems to be created wonderfully and suddenly on one night, - now we are now a long-term tide of the artistic forces, great pride and higher energy, experienced by once with the Pisans."

The field was called piazza del Domoo (Cathedral Square). However, now it is more known as Piazza Dei Miracoli (Square miracles) or Campo Dei Miracoli (field of miracles).

All these years, from the start of construction to today, Piazza Dei Miracoli is under the organization Opera Della Primaziale Pisana (OPA). First, this organization led the construction architectural monuments, Now - their preservation and popularization.
