Dovmont town

Dovmont town is a fortification extension of the Pskov Kremlin, which appeared in its ensemble in the middle of the 13th century. Initially, the city was not part of the Kremlin ensemble, but was considered its separate street, but with the expansion of the settlement it began to be considered a full-fledged urban part.

A city with more than millennial history, Pskov is literally "stuffed" with sights to the envy of many ancient cities ancient eras... The Pskov Kremlin with ancient settlements and the remains of a dozen cathedrals, medieval chambers of merchants, graceful primordially Russian churches, austere and light monasteries standing on the steep banks of the Pskov region's rivers, defensive towers, finally, interesting museums and modern monuments - all this creates a unique look of the city, to see firsthand which a considerable number of domestic and foreign tourists come to.

Pskov attracts not only by individual ancient monuments, but also by general architectural features. From time immemorial, both fortification walls, temples, and civil structures were formed from local limestone, mined in quarries on the banks of the Velikaya River, and were plastered. At the same time, safety was valued above all else - therefore, the walls of fortifications were rarely thinner than 2 meters.

Temples and monasteries of Pskov

Only within the borders of Pskov there are more than 50 churches, mainly from the 14-15th centuries. Some of them were restored back in the Soviet years, but were not used for their intended purpose (the churches of St. Nicholas from Usoha, Peter and Paul from Bui, the Intercession and the Nativity from Prolom), and some have been restored only today - this is the Church of Vasily on Gorka, Kozma and Damian from Primostia, wooden church of Varvara the Great Martyr.

The Pskov land traditionally attracts many pilgrims who want to visit local monasteries. On the territory of modern Pskov, there are only two active monasteries. First - Spaso-Preobrazhensky Mirozhsky male monasterylocated at the confluence of the river Mirozha and Velikaya. This monastery was founded around the 12th century and is known for the only perfectly preserved frescoes of the pre-Mongol period in Russia. The second active monastery in Pskov is the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Snetogorsk women's monastery, located in a picturesque place on the bend of the Velikaya River.

Only within the borders of Pskov there are more than 50 churches, mainly from the 14-15th centuries.

Pskov museums

Practically all historical buildings of Pskov have some kind of exhibitions, so that architectural monuments are at the same time museum collections. In the Prikaz Chambers, for example, tourists will be greeted by the painstakingly recreated bureaucratic life of the 17th century: "office" furniture and "ledgers", service uniforms, seals, inkwells and keys. And in the Pogankin Chambers you can see a magnificent art collection and a collection of Russian silver. But there are also full-fledged, "separate" museums in Pskov. Among them, for example, the Museum "Two Captains", dedicated to the history of writing the novel of the same name: prototypes of characters, publications of different years and in all kinds of languages, as well as further destinies of the book, its film adaptations and productions.

In order not to depend on the timetable of buses and trains on vacation, many travelers take a car for rent. Often this is the most rational choice: look at the prices and conditions on the page Rent a car in Russia subtleties - see for yourself.

Imagine the end of the route trip report. Where were they, what they saw on the fourth, penultimate day of travel. This is not a guide article, although those sights of Pskovthat we saw are, of course, its main pearls - the Kremlin, the Mirozhsky Monastery, ancient temples of the XIV-XV centuries, old houses and streets. I'll show them today. Hope with original beautyit will be possible to convey the emotional atmosphere of Pskov, because they are inseparable.

We saw Pskov from a new side. It turned out that it hides in its "nooks", the flexible loops of the Pskova River, many significant corners. Pskov does not open immediately, you "leaf through" it like a book, you learn step by step, you make unexpected discoveries. No uninteresting! I am very glad that we were able to penetrate medieval history, a powerful aura. Found places in tune with the soul - on Gremyachaya Hill, on Mikhailovskaya Hill ... They gasped, looking at the interiors of the Trinity Cathedral. Fell in love with.I showed the embankments in the fourth part of the report. Now other sights of Pskov in order of chronology of what they saw:

Advertising - club support

  1. Mirozhsky Monastery and Transfiguration Cathedral,
  2. church of Clement, Pope and Peter of Alexandria,
  3. cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist,
  4. Mikhailovskaya Tower,
  5. Gremyachaya Tower and the Church of Cosma and Damian from Gremyachaya Gorka,
  6. cafe "Chocolate",
  7. basil's Church on Gorka,
  8. Children's park and a monument to Princess Olga,
  9. pedestrian street Pskov - Pushkin street,
  10. menshikov's chambers,
  11. House of the Mason,
  12. Blacksmith's yard - Ksendz's House,
  13. Pskov Kremlin and Trinity Cathedral,
  14. kuopio Park - Finnish Park
  15. tavern "903".

Here I would add the embankments of Pskov - Olginskaya, the Velikaya and Pskov rivers, the Pogankin chambers and the Pozharka tavern. And the list of Pskov sights is ready. Of course, it can and should be continued. But for two days in Pskov no more time. Now let's get to the point.

Started with Mirozhsky monastery, one of the main attractions of Pskov. The monastery, founded in the XII century, was named after the Mirozhe river, which flows here and flows into the Velikaya river.I really wanted to get here.Last time I managed to walk only under the walls, around the monastery, because arrived in the evening after closing.

We enter the territory through the Holy Gates.

The main pearl of the monastery is Transfiguration Cathedral (mid-XII century), famous for its paintings.

It is believed that the frescoes of the cathedral are unique and cannot be compared with anything else in Russia in terms of the degree of preservation. We found forests inside the temple, but in general they did not greatly interfere with the inspection.

Mirozhsky monastery is small. We walked through its territory visited the Transfiguration Cathedral, others lookedbuildings (abbot building, church of St. Stephen, bell tower) and went out through the gate of the gate church of St. Stefan.

We take a look around the monastery where we came from and move on.

We pass from the Mirozh monastery along the path along the Great, we see church of Clement, Pope and Peter of Alexandria (Olginskaya nab., 16) is the only thing left of the Klimentovsky monastery. This is the 15th century, the Pskov school. The touches (restructuring) of later centuries are also visible.

I was attracted by the dome of the temple - hemispherical. It resembles the 12th century helmet domes. And, of course, the geometric ornament is good.

After visiting the Clement Church, before moving to the other side, we go to the Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist (Maxim Gorky St., 1). It was worth starting the day from here, because the Nativity Church is located not far from ours. But how it happened, the feet were carried to Mirozha ...

We couldn't see the temple inside. There were christenings, they said to come in an hour. They did not wait. And then they never came back. So we looked only externally. Cathedral of the Nativity of John the Baptist on Zavelichye built in 1247 by Novgorod craftsmen. It was part of the St. John the Baptist nunnery (1240). The cathedral is the only thing left of it ...

And we pass from antiquity to the Middle Ages. We're going to the other side of the Great River,

in search of the Gremyachaya Tower. But first we find Mikhailovskaya (street Sverdlova). The Pskov Towers are a special story. Powerful, timeless, they make a powerful impression. As I described in the article, Pskov had five rings of defensive fortifications. Mikhailovskaya tower was part of the fifth ring. Inaccessible, in the middle of the swamp, moreover, pushed out (which is clearly visible in the photo), it was inaccessible to the enemy. Do not be confused by her stocky appearance. The tower is two-thirds in the ground! We see only one and a half tiers out of four.

The name of the tower was given by the Archangel Michael Monastery, next to which the tower was erected. It's amazing how many temples and towers that have survived to this day tell about how many abodes disappeared in history ...

The Gremyachaya Tower stands about a kilometer from Mikhailovskaya, on the opposite bank of Pskova. Outwardly, it looks different - taller, slender, it was originally taller - six-tiered. The lower tier is in the rock.A very majestic structure! The rattling tower was also part of the fortification system of the Okolny city, in the fifth defense ring.

There is a tower on a highthe coast, opposite - the Finnish Park.

Having approached the tower, we parked nearby. But they decided to go a long way - bypassing the remains of the 16th century fortress wall from Gremyachaya Tower to Herzen Street, and then to back side along Pskova.

Part of the wall crumbled in several places.

The Gremyachaya Tower is not alone on Gremyachaya Gora. Nearby there is the Church of Cosma and Damian in Zapskovye, which in ancient times was part of the Gremyatsky Monastery. The first mention of the church - 1383, construction yesnnogo temple - 1540The tower was originally called Kosmodemyanskaya by the name of the church.

Now the tower and the church form a single ensemble of Gremyachay Gora monuments.

It was this place that became our favorite in Pskov - quiet, almost deserted,

very atmospheric. You sit on a high steep bank

Nearby, the ancient walls of the temples protect you ... Grace!

The rattling tower is steeped in legends - both about the enchanted princess sleeping deep underground in the crypt, and about the shadow of the prince living in the tower, which helped the Pskovites drive out the enemy. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. But this place is special, it is it that pulls me return to Pskov most of all.

Finishing the topic of fortress towers and walls, I will say - in my opinion, these are some of the most interesting medieval monuments in Pskov, just a living history, not "trampled down" by crowds of tourists. You may meet several people here, but the likelihood of being in silence and loneliness is very high. Enjoy Pskov here to the fullest! Ancient stones, legends, nature, views - the perfect attraction. How not to touch ?! And what pictures are obtained here!

Mystery or mystery, but as soon as we left Gremyachaya Mountain, a downpour gushed. I had to take a short pause - to rest, have a snack, and at the same time wait out the rain in cafe "Chocolate",

which is located on Victory Square (Fabricius Street, 2/17). I already talked about it three years ago in.

It's nice to note that the past tense hasn't gotten any worse.

Food, comfort and service - everything is on the level. Well done!
Pancakes with chocolate.

Pancakes with chicken.

After the cafe walk around Pskov continued. We went to Children's park... Despite the name, here you can find not only the most ordinary children's entertainment, including horse riding. There are several monuments and interesting places in the park and next to it.
The first monument - very noticeable - basil's Church on Gorka (Oktyabrsky prospect, 5). The temple was built in 1413-1415. This is the only church of the early 15th century that has survived to our times. Unique temple on a picturesque hill! It is impossible not to notice.

In the Children's Park, or rather in the Square of Red Partisans, there is a wonderful monument to Princess Olga, established to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the city.

They wanted to erect a monument to Princess Olga at this place 100 years ago. Nicholas II approved the project, but it was not destined to come true. The First World War interfered.

After walking through the Children's Park, we cross Oktyabrsky Prospect. Moving to the side pedestrian street of Pskov - to Pushkin Street.

At the intersection of the avenue and the Pskov Arbat, there is a house where Yuri Pavlovich Spegalsky lived.

Spegalsky is a famous architect who has dedicated his life to the study of Pskov architecture. The memory of the scientist is immortalized in Pskov in several places - including in the street named after him. And in this house (address: Oktyabrsky pr., 14, apt. 74) there is museum-apartment of Yu. P. Spegalsky.

Pskov Arbat is a small quiet street. Benches, lanterns, cafes - you can relax, eat. Nice place.

On Pushkin Street, 13 is located Pskov Drama Theater. A.S. Pushkin.

The building was built in 1906. Initially it was called the People's House named after A.S. Pushkin. V. Komissarzhevskaya, F. Chaliapin, L. Sobinov, A. Duncan performed on the stage of the House of Pushkin.

We have discovered such a cute corner for ourselves in Pskov.

Walking around the historical center of Pskov, you can find very interesting buildings from different eras - the Menshikov chambers, the Mason's house, the Ksendza's house. In search of these sights we set off.
Chambers of the Menshikov merchants on Romanova Gorka (Sovetskaya street, 50) - this is a complex of 4 buildings. One of them now houses a gift shop and a Gallery of Naive Art. The so-called second chambers of the Menshikovs were built in the middle of the 17th century. We didn't hit them. It was closed. But they examined it externally, though through the bars.

Oh, what stone frames on the windows!

Such windows are only in one of the Menshikovs' chambers.

If you walk along Nekrasov Street to Komsomolsky Lane, you can find two more historical masterpieces. First - mason's house (Komsomolsky per., 6), built in 1909-1910. in modern style. The unusual name of the house has nothing to do with the Masons. The house is named after its owner. Now it houses the depository of the Pskov Museum-Reserve. It was not possible to go inside. The museum was closed.

Opposite the Mason's house - ksendz's house - the chambers near the Sokolya Tower, built in the second half of the 17th century (Komsomolskiy per., 7).

In the area between Oktyabrsky Avenue and Soviet street many interesting things - the Pogankin chambers, the museum of the novel "Two Captains", the Church of Anastasia Uzorezrezitelnitsa in Kuznets, etc. We left these sights until next time. But there was one place, without which there was no way - they really wanted to visit the Trinity Cathedral in the Kremlin. So we went there. The car was parked in a large parking lot near Lenin Square.

We went to the Kremlin on foot. There is nowhere to park the car closer. But there was an opportunity to walk in the center of Pskov, take pictures of the views and

building. For example, cinema "October" (Lenin Square, 3) - the first and only two-hall wide-screen cinema in Pskov (1950s).

ABOUT Pskov Kremlin I told in a separate one. We saw the evening Kremlin for the first time. Atmospheric, we really liked it.
The Kremlin of Pskov consists of two parts - Krom (Detinets) and Dovmont's city. Dovmont city is the center of the church-state administration of the Pskov land. The Dovmont wall separating the Dovmont city from Detinets is part of the second ring of Pskov fortifications.

From the numerous temples of Dovmont's city, only the foundations remained. The churches were dismantled in the 17th - 18th centuries. In our time, during excavations, archaeologists have discovered the foundations of 10 churches and civil buildings. The foundations were mothballed and laid. Now, according to them, as if according to a plan, we can imagine what the city looked like.

The Great Gate to Krom and the Trinity mosaic icon above them.

We pass the gash and

we find ourselves in Detinets - the Kremlin.

The territory of Krom (Detinets). In the center - a cross in memory of the Annunciation Cathedral, built on this site in the 1830s. and destroyed in the 30s. last century.

Troitsky Cathedral was built at the end of the 17th century (1682-1699). This is the fourth temple in this place. You can imagine the scale of the building by comparing it with the person in the foreground. Did you see? A person seems like a grain of sand compared to the colossus of the cathedral.

We managed to visit the cathedral before the service. I am happy that it happened. This is one of the most beautiful temples that we have seen.

Outside, yes, the decor is simple enough. Tiles reminiscent of the time of construction, of course, attract attention.

As well as a memorial plaque with images of Saints Cyril and Methodius.

But when you go inside, you see a seven-tiered genuine iconostasis, miraculous icons and general decoration - you gasp!

Yes, the murals died in a fire in the 17th century. But the cathedral delights even without them.

Cancer of Prince Vsevolod-Gabriel.

The miraculous icon "Holy Trinity with Acts", late 16th - early 17th centuries.

In the Trinity Cathedral there are several miraculous icons, including St. Panteleimon, icons of the Mother of God: Chirskaya and Pskovo-Pokrovskaya, Princess Olga and others.

In the cathedral, you can take pictures without a flash, but not during the service.

We, unfortunately, did not have time to see the whole church. At 5 pm, the evening service began, and everyone was asked to leave.

For the future, I have thoughts of ordering a tour of the Trinity Cathedral in travel agency, which is located on the territory of the Kremlin. Of course, you can visit the temple on your own, it works daily from 08.00 to 20.00. Still, I want to know more about him than can be read in guidebooks and the Internet.
Well, then we just walked around the territory of the Kremlin.

Enjoyed the views, architecture.

The children were frolicking.

See Pskov in one day - is it possible? I think yes. In one day spent in Pskov, you can see a little of what the Pskov land is rich in. But still, even one day gives an idea of this ancient city.

Sightseeing tour of the city of Pskov

The Pskov Kremlin was considered the most important place of the ancient city from time immemorial. Outside the walls of the Kremlin, trade and life were raging. The center of the city was Vecheva Square, where meetings were held and, with the help of the townspeople, decisions that were fateful for the city were made. At one of these meetings, in 1397, the Pskov Judgment Letter was approved - a collection of laws by which the republic lived. The inhabitants of Pskov heard the last blows of the veche bell on January 13, 1510. Then the Pskov Vechevaya Republic became part of Muscovite Rus. On the southern part of the fortifications of Pskov - Persiakh (Pershakh), a veche bell tower towered. The chamber of sessions of the boyars was also located here, as well as the archive of the veche republic.

Kremlin or as it is called Krom - these are mighty fortress walls, one of the most impregnable fortresses of the Middle Ages. If your city tour will take place with a guide, you will learn about the structure of the fortress and the secrets thanks to which the enemy never managed to take it in battle. Trinity Cathedral - the main temple of the Pskov land. The first building of the cathedral was built in the tenth century, at the direction of the Grand Duchess Olga. The cathedral is the burial vault of three Pskov saints, patrons of the city of Pskov. In the cathedral there is a miraculous icon of the Chirskaya Mother of God (fifteenth century), which is the object of worship of many believers. The Kremlin stands on a rock, and in ancient times, when there were no multi-storey buildings in the city, the golden dome of the Trinity Cathedral was visible from a great distance on a clear day.

The second cathedral in stone was erected in the seventeenth century by order of the first Pskov prince Vsevolod-Gabriel. But the most amazing thing was the third Trinity Cathedral, erected in 1367. He played a decisive role in the development of local architectural traditions. The reconstruction of the cathedral told about 25 of its thrones and 32 slopes of its roof. The modern Trinity Cathedral has become the fourth in a row. It was built in 1699. The temple is notable for its intricate seven-tier iconostasis. The relics of the Pskov saints rest in a shrine behind the walls of the church: Dovmont, Vsevolod-Gabriel, Nikolka Salos Since ancient times, Pskov has been called the House of the Holy Trinity.

Once the Pskov veche was noisy near the walls of the cathedral, the council of the veche republic sat in the hallway, and the most important documents of Pskov were kept in the cathedral. Pskov warriors fled from the walls of the Trinity Cathedral to fight the enemy, and the Pskov princes and bishops were buried in the subchurch. The swords of Vsevolod-Gabriel and Dovmont-Timofey, numbered among the saints, hung in the cathedral. On the sword of the first Pskov prince Vsevolod-Gabriel was engraved the motto: "I will not give my honor to anyone." The second sword belonged to Dovmont-Timofey, like the epic hero who reigned in Pskov for 33 years. In moments of danger for Pskov, the Pskov land, he addressed the veche: "Brothers, men of Pskov, pull for the Holy Trinity and for the holy churches, for your fatherland." In the Trinity Cathedral, an important state act was performed: "setting on the table" (approval) of the Pskov prince, kissing the cross for his loyalty to Pskov.

The Bell Tower of the Trinity Cathedral, dating from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, deserves special attention. It replaced the ancient tower "on the Radchin sprout". You can see all these wonderful structures with your own eyes when visiting the Pskov Kremlin.

Dovmont city - got its name from the prince Dovmont who ruled in Pskov

The excursion continues in the Dovmont town, named after the prince Dovmont who ruled in Pskov at the end of the eighteenth century. Here archaeologists have uncovered the remains of temples and civil buildings. A magnificent monument of architecture of the seventeenth century - the Prikaznye Chambers has survived to this day. Dovmont wall - second belt defensive walls the Pskov fortress, which covered it from the southern side most accessible to the enemy. Today the wall is decorated with a decorative composition in memory of the victory of Alexander Nevsky at Lake Peipsi, including the Pskov coat of arms. A protective ditch - Rowing - was dug before her. On the left, at the junction of the walls, stands the faceted Dovmont Tower, which stands out among its sisters with its "European" look. It was built in the nineteenth century on the site of the older Smerdya Tower, which had one of the gates of Krom (the Pskov Kremlin).

On the territory of Dovmont's city, you can see several foundations of churches, showing the density of the building of the 15th century. During the heyday of Pskov, 19 churches were located in Dovmont town, west side there were princely mansions, in the south-west - civil buildings, where the management of industrial, merchant and church affairs of the city was located. Each temple (and these, apparently, were the guild churches of the holy patrons of associations of artisans and merchants) had its own cemetery, with fences and gates, and there were also huts! By the seventeenth century, only eleven churches survived in the Dovmont city, as well as the Palace Order, Going, Prikaznaya and Dacha's huts, and other government buildings, of which only the Prikazny Chambers survived. Order Chambers

In the congress (Prikaznaya) hut of the seventeenth century, the voivodeship of Pskov was located. Here, under the command of the governors and clerks, administrative office work was concentrated, investigation, trial and reprisals were carried out. By decree of May 15, 1687, it was renamed into the Order Chamber. Built in 1693, instead of the wooden one, the stone building of the Order Chamber was made "the kindest skill". On the first floor there were a vestibule, a room for convicts and a clerk archive, on the second there were the chambers of the governor and clerks. In 1701, with the outbreak of the Northern War, the Order Chamber was liquidated, and an arsenal was equipped in its building. Since 1760, there was a spiritual consistory, then there were merchant shops, a tavern and a tea house. The Order Chamber is the only administrative building of the seventeenth century that has survived in Pskov. Now in the building of the chamber an exposition and exhibition and cultural Center Pskov Museum-Reserve, on the second floor the interior of the chambers of the times of the voivode administration was recreated.

Have Pokrovskaya tower tourists learn about the siege of Pskov by the troops of Stephen Batory in 1581. Using the example of the Church of St. Nicholas from Usohi, one can get acquainted with the peculiarities of the Pskov school of architecture. The Pokrovskaya Tower was built in the late fifteenth - early sixteenth centuries. The most powerful fortress tower in Pskov. At one time, the size of the Pokrovskaya Tower was unmatched in Western Europe... Its circumference is 90 meters, its height is more than 50 meters, the interior has a five-tiered division. In September 1581, a fierce battle between the Pskovites and the troops of Stephen Batory broke out here. The fierce battle ended in the middle of the night, the Poles entrenched in the dilapidated Pokrovskaya Tower surrendered. The Pskovites lost 863 people killed and 1626 wounded in repelling the assault, the losses of the Poles were six times greater. The Pokrovskaya Tower is a part of the so-called Pokrovskiy complex of the historical part of Pskov. It also includes the Intercession Gate, part of the fortress wall, Peter's bastions, the Church of the Intercession from Prolom, a monument to the 300th anniversary of the 1581 defense.

Among the monuments of civil architecture of the seventeenth century, special attention is paid to the most famous building - Pogankin chambers... In the old merchant chambers of the merchant Pogankin, collections of silver items of the twelfth - seventeenth centuries, Pskov icons of the twelfth century, folk applied art, "The Heroic Past of the Pskov Land", and ancient coins are kept. Pogankin Chambers Built by order of the famous and richest Pskov merchant Sergei Ivanovich Pogankin, whose surname gave the name to the chambers. Sergei Pogankin was in charge of the monetary yard and customs in Pskov, was a tavern's head, and conducted extensive trade. And he built the chambers on a grand scale. The entire complex of U-shaped stone buildings was erected simultaneously. The three-storey building was intended for the owner's family, the second building - two-storey - for the family of his adult son. The one-story building housed a cookery. In 1711, the Pogankin chambers were transferred from the owners to the department of the Main Provision Office for warehouses for food and fodder. In 1900, at the request of the public, the chambers were transferred to the Pskov Archaeological Society to organize a local history museum in them. Since that time, the history of the chambers has been inextricably linked with the history of the city museum. The Pogankin Chambers is the largest civil building of the seventeenth century in Pskov.

Mirozhsky Monastery is the center of the cultural life of medieval Pskov. The monastery was founded in the twelfth century, one of the first Christian monasteries in Russia. The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral houses a museum of frescoes created by Greek masters back in the twelfth century. 80% of the original frescoes have survived, and by UNESCO's decision this monument was included in the list of unique works of world art.

If you have transport, you can visit the Snetogorsk monastery, which is located within the city and see the monument to Alexander Nevsky, which was erected in memory of the Battle of the Ice in 1242.

Not everything I told about it amazing city... Many milestones in history are associated with Pskov. The city in the sixteenth century withstood a one and a half year siege by the Polish army of Stefan Batory. On the evening of March 2, 1917, in Pskov, at the railway station, Emperor Nicholas II signed a telegram to Headquarters, which later became known as the manifesto of abdication. From 1941 to 1944, Pskov was occupied by Nazi troops, from which it suffered greatly. The most remarkable part of the architectural heritage of Pskov is ancient churches, whitewashed, single-domed, with characteristic belfries (sometimes detached, sometimes built on the slope of the temple) and porches. These features sharply distinguish them from other monuments of Russian architecture of that time, which makes it possible to speak of the Pskov architectural style. The city has churches of the XII-XV centuries - in most of Russia, all buildings of that time were destroyed by the Mongols and internecine wars.

In terms of the number of ancient Russian architectural monuments, Pskov is not inferior even to Veliky Novgorod. Everything here attracts tourists to the Kremlin - an ancient stone fortress with towers, amazingly perfectly preserved to this day, churches built in the XII century, when the city was the capital of the independent Pskov principality. In addition, several sections of the city walls have survived, some of them have been completely restored. There are many museums, sculptures and monuments in the city.

This is one of the most visited cities, so the city authorities do not spare funds for the restoration. The location next to European countries gives the architectural appearance of Pskov features that are unusual for other Russian cities.

Come you won't regret it. The ancient city will share with you its unforgettable beauty and heroic history.

Corners that deserve your attention are found everywhere in Pskov. It is impossible to pay enough attention to each attraction during a one-day excursion.

Come to Pskov for 7-10 days. You can enjoy beautiful landscapes, see architectural masterpieces that adorn this land for 7 - 8 centuries! There are not many such places in Russia.

Take note! To help tourists, an information center has been operating since 2010 in the October cinema. Here you can buy a guidebook, check the opening hours of museums, addresses of clubs and hotels. Experts will select a personal guide, book a table in a restaurant and order a taxi.

Landmarks, photos of which often appear in various publications (including abroad), have become a symbol of Russia for many foreigners.

The Vlasyevskaya Tower is located on the territory of the Pskov Kremlin. She was one of the city's defensive towers. Its construction dates back to the 15th century. The tower has a high tent and an observation deck. In ancient times, it was part of the defensive line of the fortress walls near the Velikaya River. The tower is named after the Vlasiy temple, which was located at the Dovmont wall.

Thunder tower

This building was erected in the city in 1525. At first, the tower was called Kosmodemyanskaya. Today this structure is almost 20 m high, completely isolated. The Gremyachaya Tower has a diameter of 15 meters. There are six tiers inside, on which the cannons were installed. In ancient times, there was a wall near the tower, which was connected to several arches that blocked off the river.

Many legends are associated with this structure. One of them says that a priceless treasure is hidden in the underground of the tower, the ringing of its coins gave the name to the building. The tower has an underground passage, it was built to provide water for the city's defenders during a long siege.

Truvorovo settlement

This is the place of the first settlement, from which the history of today's Izborsk begins. It is located on the Gorodishchensky Cape. The Izborsk fortress was built here, which was later moved to its present place.

The area of the settlement is slightly more than 1 hectare. It rises above the lake to a height of 45 m. From the southern, open side, a fortress was erected. Today, you can see the remains of a moat and a semicircular embankment. Behind them were residential buildings, in the very center of which was the main square of the settlement.

In 2011, specialists from the Hermitage (St. Petersburg) began to restore the settlement.

Slovenian Keys

This well-known source is located in the vicinity of Izborsk. Slovenian keys are the most powerful of those to whom popular rumor attributes healing qualities. The history of these sources goes back several millennia. They are located in the Izborsko-Malskaya valley. In these places, underground waters break through to the surface from under the dolomite and limestone slabs. The spring water is crystal clear, transparent and highly mineralized - it contains a lot of calcium. Slovenian springs give about 3.5 liters of water every second.

Many legends and legends are associated with them. There is a version that they got their name in honor of the prince of Sloven. After the battle with the Livonians on the Slovenian field, so many soldiers died that the earth was stained with blood, and bloody water began to gush from the springs. One of the townspeople had a dream in which he was told that the Izborians needed to name the springs by the names of the apostles, come to them with a prayer of repentance, serve the service, which would return clean water. Locals say that after all the rituals were completed, the springs began to be called the "Keys of the 12 Apostles".

Nowadays the springs never dry up. True, their "activity" depends on the dryness of the year.

Once upon a time there was a mill on the Slovenian Springs, and they supplied the whole city with water. They are often mentioned in ancient annals. Today it is about 12-15 jets, which fall on the limestone in small cascades. Gathering in a common stream, the jets flow into the Gorodishchenskoye lake. Keys have become a popular attraction of the Izborsk Museum. For the past ten years, keys have been blessed.
